Okay - we know it EXISTS, but last episode didn't give us anything remotely approximating a good look. Furthermore, there are no plans yet to bring the ship or her Captain or their ratty old chair back for another look.
So, design your own patch. Go!

In the other thread that mentions this, didn't someone post some second or third-hand information about the patch design being put up on Startrek.com later?

I just posted this in the logos thread the other day:
quote:It wasn't seen distinctly in the episode, but according to Mike Okuda (who is now posting on the TrekBBS along with Rick Sternbach! ) startrek.com will be putting up an image of it soon. He also revealed that Malcolm's buddy's patch from way back in "Silent Enemy" was actually a NASA patch for the new Mission Control Center at the Johnson Space Center.
Okuda's post is here, and an image of the MCC patch is also in the thread.
quote:I believe that Startrek.com will be posting the art for the Columbia patch in the near future. And Trips' friend's diamond-shaped shoulder patch was actually a NASA patch for the new Mission Control Center at the Johnson Space Center, courtesy of Ground Control officer William Foster.

Why the hell would Rick and Mike post at TrekBBS!?! I hope they enjoy Major Barclow.
Posted by Dat (Member # 302) on :
They post there only because it's a more obvious place to post than on Flare.
Posted by AndrewR (Member # 44) on :
Heh, well quality over quantity must count for something? Err.
Posted by The Mighty Monkey of Mim (Member # 646) on :
Hey, maybe if enough of us nudge them this way, they might play ball.
But I suspect that they don't have time to deal with two boards.
Posted by Charles Capps (Member # 9) on :
TrekBBS is a little more high profile than we are.
Posted by Dat (Member # 302) on :
Especially since it has Trek in its name and we don't.

Hey we had Mojo for awhile. HAH take that!
Posted by Dat (Member # 302) on :
That's not saying much.

Back on topic... Isn't it going to look just like NX-01 patch, only with "Enterprise" replaced with "Columbia"?
Posted by The Mighty Monkey of Mim (Member # 646) on :
Er, no.
Posted by Kazeite (Member # 970) on :
Oh, OK then.
Posted by Nonresonance (Member # 1519) on :
There is my version of the patch. The phrase means "Fortune Favors the Bold.
I based the rendering entirely around this crappy screen cap.
Posted by Lee (Member # 393) on :
Aha! Now, this is the kind of new member I LIKE! And I do like your rendition of the patch. In all likelihood, the real thing's depiction of the ship in the patch looks to be more angular and 'technically-accurate,' but I think the almost. . . abstract look of your design is terrific. Well done!

Here is my version of the patch seen above.
Hope you all like it.
Posted by B.J. (Member # 858) on :
Nonresonance: I basically agree with Lee on the accuracy, but very good rendition! We need some more artists around here!

Thanks for the comments. From I've observed, the logo seems to have rounded, loose feel to it. I know my version is completely accurate, but I don't think the actual version has so much detail.
Odysious, I think your NX-01 is excellent. However, I don't see all that boxy stuff hanging off the back of the ship in the screen cap. And the nacelles are definitely skewed in a more extreme direction. I also don't think there is as much highlighting around the bridge in the televised version. And I think your stars might be in the wrong place. I'm not trying to tear down your work, I actually think it's totally rad. Of course, someday some magazine or website will post the actual version, so we can see how we both went wrong. I definitely know that my latin phrase is a little long on the right, for example.
Posted by Lee (Member # 393) on :
Actually, that could probaby be fixed by rotating the whole motto about 5 degrees clockwise.
Posted by Odysious (Member # 1180) on :
Thanks for the comments Nonresonance. I can see now that the ship needs to be skewed a little more and the stars fixed up a bit. The screen caps that I have seen are a little too blury to make out if the detail of the ship is there. It is hard to say but I beleive there would be more contoure detail to it to make it more look like an NX class ship. But as you said, someday some magazine or website will post the actual version. We will see then.
Again great work Nonresonance and thanks.

Now... anyone gonna do the Hur'q symbol?
Posted by B.J. (Member # 858) on :
Dammit. Apparently you WON'T shut up.

I have updated the NX-02 Patch design based on Nonresonance's observations. Hope its a better fit.

Cool... But how does an embroidered patch simulate a glow like that?

Posted by B.J. (Member # 858) on :
I've seen it done before (but I can't seem to find an example). You'd have the threads going radially, with successive circles of darker and darker thread. Of course it's only an approximation, getting an effect similar to "posterizing" the image.

I was going to make an intelligent, well thought out response congratulating the two of you and making some comments on where the badges might be accurate or not. But then I read:

...and my brain exploded. Sorry.

It's THE FUTURE! Glowy thread should not be a major obstacle.

Uh Ohhhh, somebody has smiley-blindness. Or can't get a joke.
As I said before, though - nice, but reverend or now, Resonance and Odysious could do better.
Posted by B.J. (Member # 858) on :
Yes, I know that was a joke. A bad one at that. Thank you Chief Little Running Gag.
And you did notice I did that in Powerpoint? I could do better myself at home with Corel DRAW, but that was a quick 5 minute job at work.
