The pilot for Stargate SG-1 aired here in Sweden, last monday. It always takes about four years for our TV companies to get stuff from the US (S:AaB came in -95 and Sweden got it in -99).
It seems good and it beats crappy "X-Files season VI" which is at the same time, 21:00 mondays, so I'll watch it.

Anyhow, I started watching the pilot, was relieved when I realised out that the show didn't try to replace the movie (a la Nikita) but succeed it, all past events had still happened.
I also noted they must have a pretty good budget, those weapons they carry (M-249 machineguns, semi-auto assault shotguns) and the other equipment must've cost a fortune.

Then it happened. That "god-of-night" hypnotized Sha're before the alien examination and left her IN THE NIP!!! I couldn't believe it! I've never seen so much skin in any 45min TV-show! And with MacGyver in it as well, mr boy scout!

I discussed it with a girl in my office yesterday, she had also been surprised, but thought it a good move, bodies are nothing to be ashamed of.

So did this stir up hell in the US? Did the show get banned from any channels, did it start any debates on talkshows?? Did the producers have to edit it or something, to reach more channels? And will there be more of it in the series?
I suppose that if they decide to drop the bomb this early, they'll try to take advantage of it while they can.

To my knowledge this is the only show I've ever seen with full nudity in it, or have there been others? Will Trek get some?

As I understand it, you saw the video/cable version. The pilot that was shown in the US and the UK didn't have the, er, extra bits. I don't know how common the practice is - in fact, I've never heard of any other show filming gratuitous sex/nudity only to be included in the video version. Although I gather that "Total Recall 2070" was a bit dodgy in that regard, never seen it though.

Personally, I nearly fell off my chair the first time there was nudity on "The Outer Limits." You get kinda used to the Yanks being totally prudish!

Oh, BTW - get any vidcaps? 8)

Yes, I suppose most producers/TV company commitees just cut stuff to reach a bigger audience. And they count on protective parents to be on their side.

Funny though, that the US and Canada must buy this "special" episode that we got for free.

Six months ago a debate show on our TV4 discussed the topic of what you may and may not show on TV. They topped it off with getting a young couple that would have sex in live television if the "yes" side won in their phone vote. That was cool.
People even SMS:ed in their vote.
"Yes" won with 80-20.

On a slightly related topic, I hereby post this prediction (I've had this thought for a little while now): within 5 years, the word "shit" will be scripted, spoken and aired on a US television show. There'll be a little hubbub, but it will open the door for swearing to become more and more prominent on US airwaves.

A breast will be seen on screen with in 7 to 10 years.

Does this relate to anything? Well, slightly. Mostly, though, it's an opportunity for me to spout off...

It's better to edit out violence than sex.

Our problem is we've got this old, puritanical mindset (brought to you by your friendly neighborhood paranoid fundies) that the human body and sex are somehow 'dirty.'

There'd be less violence if there was more sex. Nobody'd have the TIME!

Actually, men are said to be more prone to violence if disturbed/irritated during sex, especially during orgasm.
Apparently, the mind is very sensitive at that time and talk about "issues" or problems in the relationship can be...bad.

Stargate SG-1 isn't on network television. It has nothing to do with network television. It is a product of Showtime, which is a cable network, and thus is free to produce shows like "Fucky Fuckertson Goes to Town!" and so on.

The Outer Limits was also a Showtime production, which explains Alyssa Milano.

It's just the US Gov/Hyper-sensitive religious types/People who can't see the human body without cringing that make US air waves so censored to nudity, sex and the harsher curse words. Most of the rest of us are perfectly normal though.

I am currently downloading the episode you mention, and most likely it'll have the "naughty bits" so I'll make screen caps of them when it's done.

My condolences to Nimrod - seems Finland beat Sweden by half a decade here. Yes, our regular TV2 showed the full frontal nude scenes. No warnings or "parental guidance required" tags or anything, but then again, all scifi tended to air past midnight in those days. There's very little partial censorship here in general. It's either full ban or full monty.

IMHO, it just added to the no-kidding, we're-doing-serious-AND-enjoyable-scifi-and-LIKING-it, attitude of the whole show. Instead of a cheap "ooh, sex" gimmick, it hit me more as "we don't stoop to inventing some silly and perverse explanation to why the Goa'uld WOULDN'T strip the poor girl nude" honesty.

What do you mean, "half a decade"?
Swedish TV productions have had nudity in it since the 70's, I was merely amazed when an american production showed it.
And it turns out they didn't, apparently just for the special version.
I'll bet the rest of the season is lukewarm...

"Half a decade" referred to the airing of "Children of God" specifically, not to the introduction of nudity to television (hey, considering that TV broadcasting in Finland was first begun by tech students, it's surprising we didn't get soft porn from day one...). Nyah, nyah! We may not have gotten Trek especially quickly, but SG-1 we got more or less straight from the oven.

Too bad the show didn't stay on air constantly, but kept going to these pauses of indeterminate lenghts, until it finally stalled in the third season. I'm *desperate* for season 4 episodes... Luckily, there's a good web forum for that show as well (http://www.gaters.net).

Highlander: The Series has been edited for airing in the US. Essentially, to make room for more of those lovely commercials, they chop about 4-minutes of sword' swinging or love making or whatever out of each episode to show us lovely Americans.

The edits are called the "Euro-minutes": probably because the Europeans get to see the whole episode. When Highlander was released on video in season box-sets, the Euro-minutes were added for the American release. Quite a few of the first season's Euro-minutes featured Duncan and Tessa ... and not many clothes. Prophecy in the Fifth Season featured an extended end scene with Duncan and Cassandra (Tracy Scoggins) getting it down and dirty ...

On the all and all, the vast majority of the Euro-minutes are either the "Darius/Waterloo" flashback that TPTB decide they need to repeat ten times each season, or dialogue cut out ... there was a great scene with Methos and a "Villain of the Week" the episode where the British guy was trying to kill MacLeod for Mac's actions against the English... in a Season V episode -- can't think of the name, and I can't check either 'cuz they're all boxed up -- ah, but it was a great bit of dialogue that we 'mericans didn't get ...

Also, I watched Episode II yesterday, where they finally made Kowalski dead. Poor guy, must've been a small paycheck compared to the other guys. Two episodes...

And what's up with Richard Dean Anderson? He gets this "whiny ol' fart" voice when he yells nowadays. "General, ye cean't send theat bomb through, ye jest cean't!!!" He never sounded like that in MacGyver...

But I must say I was surprised at the development there, I thought they'd feed on that "one of the goodguys is in fact one of them" for a whole season, like Seska and that pathetic ensign that ended up in the warp core. Of course, they probably hadn't planned to devilize Seska from the beginning.

And the SG-1 action is great, very professional military-style moves when Kowalski smacked down those two little guards. Star Trek has always had the crappiest fight coordinators, apart from Tsunkatse.

Well, I'm at my girlfriend's tonight, so it'll have to be tomorrow night (can't send them from work - it is, after all, one of my jobs to nail people at work who send this sort of stuff by email!). Unless Alan wants to send on the zip I sent him. . ?

"Uhh, Hey Vogon, I'd like three Nova Class shots, a Prommie from the side if you have it, a couple naked pictures of Linda Carter and two shots of a type 9 shuttle."

Sounds good to me. It could be the Napster of Sci-Fi artwork.

I'm reminded of a conversation between Nixon and someone else, part of the White House recorded meetings that so enlivened Watergate. I believe Nixon is informed that the amount to silence Hunt and the other members of the break-in team would be about a million dollars. Nixon pauses for a second, then says, matter-of-factly, "we can get that."

Linda Carter? I can get that. 8)

now everytime I try to take a screen cap, it's black! If nothing else, you can just download the full movie here and try to get it yourself. Just need Divx, I think. It's 40megish or abouts so it'll take time to get, but it's the full uncensored version of the pilot.
I'll still try to work on it though and get the caps.

Posted by Vogon Poet (Member # 393) on :

Not sure whether I've ever tried getting caps from an ASF. . . actually, I think I did, from a "Field of Fire" clip, and it wouldn't work no matter what.
