I really was thinking i mite wanna try and get there some time in the distant future coz itd be so amazing an experience!
BTW whoever made this site it is very cool!

We all apologize for hijacking your first thread. Here's the proper forum to discuss Robinson's Mars books.. Officer's Lounge is usually reserved for our personal discussions, while General Sci-Fi applies to the books. Discuss!

Hey!!!! Don't blame me!!!

Posted by Elna (Member # 837) on :

Ill bloody well blame whoever i want"! Only joking, Is there anyone out there who will reply to this with something to do with mars or is that totally outta the question?!! [Smile]

Well, all right; I hope they make films of the Mars trilogy, though it'd be hard to find actors to play the characters when they're *really* old!

Posted by CaptainMike (Member # 709) on :

Well, I never got the chance to read them, but my former friend and current arch nemesis Tim (not you, Tim!) read them and loved them. I believe they came up in discussion when we were arguing whether or not Mars should still be Red after supposedly being terraformed (in Star Trek).

Were there a lot of scientific explanations for the processes of Terraforming used in the book? or am i way out in left field there..?

Yeah finding actors would be hard, although they could try to age them a little bit and they are only supposed to look seventy at 200 due to the longevity treatments. It would make a damn good film though! Id reccomend the books definately, they changed my views on the planet considerably and since reading them ive actually started to consider becoming an astronaught rather than just an astronomer on earth. Dont know yet though, its a bit far ion my future to properly think about!

I don't recall Mars being terraformed in Star Trek - one of the Captain's Table novels mentioned domes though. And no you're not in left field: Red Mars - the journey there and setting up and a bit on terraforming; Green Mars - mostly terraforming info; Blue Mars - I haven't finished this one as I got bogged down with political material in it, but plan to go back once I've moved house and unpacked. They've mentioned "Martian Colonies" in Star Trek, but I don't think they've ever said that it has been terraformed. There are probably big bubble cities or something like the Lunar colonies.

the debate over whether or not Trek depicts, or should depict, Mars as terraformed began in page two of this thread and continued in this one

As long as they don't slaughter it like Battlefield Earth.... That would have made a decent mini-series.....

Posted by Vogon Poet (Member # 393) on :

No it wouldn't.

But just think of the starpower!

Posted by CaptainMike (Member # 709) on :

i refuse to think of it. *shudders*

Posted by Vogon Poet (Member # 393) on :

Battlefield Earth was actually quite a lot of fun to read, but artistically it has no merits whatsoever.

Posted by Elna (Member # 837) on :

Yeah im not sure whethere its terraformed in trekor not either. I agre wiv blue mars being a bit political, i skipped loadsa pages coz i got bored!!! They'd have to have bloody good film people to do the books justice and really cood graphics for the canyons and all that. Only other problem is being able to make things look so big, i cant imagine anything like ythe scale the books describe, i mean some of the canyons on mars would fit loadsa grand canyons iun and still not be full, also, how would they be ab;le to create the effect of the near hoizons on computer?? I suppose they might have to take actual pictures from mars and feed them in and then somehow use them to get the desired scenes.

Jesus Christ. Will you PLEASE try to write English properly?! It's fucking embarrassing, there are people here who don't have English as their first language yet manage to be more coherent! If you can't be bothered to put some effort into what you write, why should we be bothered to read it?

I suspect another antisocial.com invasion myself. . .

Posted by CaptainMike (Member # 709) on :

i agree with Vogon, but not his tone. please assume that someone will be reading your writing, and preview it accordingly.

Well maybe you people should be less fucking hung up about the way i type?? Im posting on this site so i can talk to people who are interested in similar things to me not to have you all be sad bastards and talk about nothing better than whether my english is up to your standards. I'll have you all know im predicted A* in both of my upcoming english gcse exams (thats A+ for all you americans) so you can just all shove your moaning where the sun dont shine. I didnt register here to be moaned about, i registered here to have some nice conversations with some intelligent people, but maybe hoping for that was a bit too much then?? Maybe i'll just go somewhere where people will just reply to the things i actually write instead of being hung up in their own stupid little worlds of perfect grammar. I mean are you here to discuss sci-fi and all that or to just be sad idiots?? I'm sooo sorry i dont fit in with you, im just gutted (yeah right). You obviously dont have room for normal pepople in this place, or intelligent ones so FUCK YOU ALL!!! Oh and whoever owns this site if u log me off, guess wot?? I dont give a shit so HA!

Posted by Elna (Member # 837) on :

Oh, for anyone who is actully interested in talking i dont mean to offend you, just the ones who have moaned both on this thread and the one in the officer's lounge where it ws originally posted (wrongly!!) If there are people who wanna have a discussion about mars ill talk to you no problems, but people just need to lighten up a bit. So anyone who hasnt done anything [Big Grin] i dont mean to offend you lot!

Well, good luck on your GCSEs because you're sure going to need it. I suggest you just calm down, think about what you want to say and then try to get it across as clearly as possible. Your current style might be ideal for discussions at www.mykindaplace.com over which member of Blue is the hunkiest, but not here.

Ooh, that was just plain mean, wasn't it? Sorry, don't take it personally, I'm nasty to everyone. Oh, and by the way, for the most part we're here just to be sad idiots. 8)

Are you from the Trek BBS, by any chance?
Or using AOL Instant Messenger?

:::raises half a brow::: I'M on AOL, Boy Without Common-sense. Are you attempting to imply something, hmm?

Posted by The BWC (Member # 818) on :

No, It's just that most people who use that a lot go into AOL-kiddie-speak.
(I have something 4 u, Hey ppl, What r u doing, ect. )
No offense for those who use AOL and can type properly.

Personages currently dwelling within the boundaries of transparent domiciles would do well not to engage in limb-powered flight of hardened earth objects.

"Maybe i'll just go somewhere where people will just reply to the things i actually write instead of being hung up in their own stupid little worlds of perfect grammar."

People did reply to what you wrote. You wrote something almost wholly unintelligible, and they responded by telling you as much.

If this thread doesn't move back into some sort of civilized discussion about the original topic soon, I'll just lock it and let it die a nice quiet death.

Elna: I said so in your original Officers' Lounge thread, but I'll add it here as well: Welcome to Flare. I do hope that you will choose to stay with us and join our little circle of insanity and inanity. That said, there are a couple things about this place that you should be aware of.

First, this place is fairly friendly and tight-knit community. If you search through the old threads of the Officers' Lounge, you will see this quite plainly. You'll also note that there is a bit of good-natured ribbing amongst us. So, for the most part, don't take the harsh remarks at face value as an insult. A good amount of the time, it's just a joke (and it is rather unfortunate that sarcasm and the tone of humor do not carry well on the Internet).

Second, while there aren't any official rules on the subject, there are some standards about posting here (think of them as common law). It is simply a fact that posts that use capitalization, puncuation, and paragraphing and avoid Internet subbing (like using "2" for "to" or "u" for "you") are easier to follow and understand. It makes for a smoother read and clarity of thought.

The posters in this thread aren't harping on your typing for the sake of ragging on the newbie. It's simply to let you know that we're having trouble following you. I'll admit that I had trouble reading through some of your earlier posts in this thread. We're asking you to change your typing so that we can hold a discussion with you.

Well normally i can type like a normal human being like i am now, it's just that i do have instant messenger and also, i have a habit of typing fast so my words get muddled up a bit. My first language is english thank you very much whoever that was, and in english exams you dont type so i'll have no problems placing my letters in the right order in my words!! And yes i did take it personally and i dont appreciate you being wuite so nasty about it, maybe you could have said it in a nicer way that you didnt understand what i wrote, like captain mike did and i wouldnt have had to get all nasty and defensive.

MARS IS WONDERFUL!!7 Maybe you shiould close the topic because no one is interested anyway [Frown] I will stay here as long as people are nice to me and dont call me an embarassment anymore [Big Grin]

Well, in that case, I'm sure I speak for the majority when I say, don't let the door hit you on your ass on the way out. 8)
