For British series, I usually default to their nomenclature of a season of episodes as a "series". "Last of the Time Lords" is the final episode of the third series of Doctor Who. The fourth series was announced months ago and is about to start filming in Cardiff. British TV is almost always year-to-year and rarely do they announce multi-year series renewals, even for big-budget dramas like this. It's last episode of "his" third series. David Tennant has been the Doctor for the second and third series, and will continue on in the fourth.
