Bill Adama is a rookie pilot not flown a combat mission yet and he's now stationed on the Galactica. He's already pretty "friendly" with that other pilot!
The Cylon's are guarding something in "ass end of nowhere", and people think it's a super weapon. I remember reading that, Razor and the new webisode's were gonna introduce stuff that would play out during Season 4, so I'm thinking that it's this super weapon. I think it's either gonna be destroyed in the first war and be rebuilt in time for the second, or that it was never destroyed and is still out there. I reckon that in Razor, Pegasus will come across it in it's own escape from the Colonies, and that it pop up to terrorize the rag tag fleet in season 4, as they make the final trip to Earth.
Posted by Reverend (Member # 335) on :
Actually I thin k the "super weapon" is actually the prototype resurrection ship/facility, based on the previews.
I do like how the old flight suits are somewhat similar to those from the original series. In fact, BSG:OS fans should enjoy Razor since I gather there's going to be allot of Original series references. Old model Centurions, worthy of the name 'toaster', and I think I even spotted and old saucer shaped raider in one of the previews.

From the dialog and the mention of an ice planet, I had the impression the Secret Cylon Super Weapon (TM) was a "Gun on Ice Planet Zero."
4,000+ days into the war (can't remember the exact figure and I'm not checking right now) placed it at about 11 or 12 years, assuming 365 days for a year.

I was a little disappointed that the Galactica did not have its old school look, though I guess there's still time for TOS Battlestars to appear. Also I was surprised that Raptors were in use as early as the war, even though there was never any evidence to refute this.
Posted by B.J. (Member # 858) on :
Don't remember the exact figure right now, either, but I remember working it out to 12 1/2 years.
I'm glad we'll see the original Raiders, but I'm also disappointed that they used the same Raptor. I know they didn't need to waste money on a new set piece to just be used for this, but it would be interesting to see a Raptor design that's a true contemporary to the Mk II Viper.
And maybe this will finally silence the people who keep saying the Galactica had her armor stripped!
Posted by Reverend (Member # 335) on :
Original series fans should be happy with this. Not just Raiders, but original Basestars too. Also check out 00:34 on this clip and spot the familiar face hiding at the end of a hallway.
As for the Raptor, while I'm sure the reason for keeping the existing one is financial, it can be rationalised. If you imaging that the Raptor is the Colonial's principle electronic warfare and recon ship then it's not unreasonable to assume that it was developed during they Cylon war, where electronic warfare and of course counter EW was pushed to a whole new level. The reason it's the same ship 40 hears later is just a testament to how well they were designed and to a degree, how little need there has been, since the armistice, to design a better one. There are real world precedents for this, the Canberra and the USAF B-52 have both been in service for longer thn 40 years, so it's possible.

Yeah, Friday's episode was AWESOME! Adama really knows how to handle that Viper!
I like how they showed how much larger the Raider was than the Viper in those first few seconds. Although that Raider model was very close to the one in TOS, there were some subtle changes. The most obvious is that the wingtips were pushed slightly forward, sorta echoing the forward prongs of the modern Raider.
Posted by Mars Needs Women (Member # 1505) on :
The basestars were pretty awesome. Maybe it was me, but did it seem like they were rotating as they fired? Also that Battlestar that was destroyed was called Columbia, but the Miniseries also had a Columbia that was destroyed. I guess it was rebuilt only to be destroyed again.
Posted by Reverend (Member # 335) on :
Well, of the original 12 weren't all save Galactica lost in the first war? I might be misremembering but I thought the old bucket was the last to survive, hence being turned into a museum.
As for they guy playing young Adama, either he's an excellent mimic or Olmos is being dubbed over his combat dialogue.

I can now add that Flare's favorite CGI pro guy "Mojo" was involved in composing and animating many of the shots in these minisodes. In a conversation with him this summer, we talked about specific shots from the original BSG show that he was re-doing in CG, as a tribute to the original modelwork. You can see at least one of them in minisode 3. 200 cubits if you can pick them out.

Shouldn't be too hard, the original show only had about 6 effect shots that were recycled over and over and over...

I only watched them on Youtube since I'm from the UK, so the quality wasn't fantastic, but I was really blown away by Flashback 3. I mean, if this is the stuff they cut out of Razor.. I saw a few shots that reminded me of the original series. There was a shot of a raider gliding over the top of Galactica that was quite reminiscent, as well as the style of the explosions. I'll have to watch it again now and see if they redid the distinctive shot with a raider blowing up in the top right hand corner. That shot seemed to get used more than any other in TOS, but it was very good.
Great to have the debate about the hull armour solved now as well, since Columbia was covered in more panels than Galactica. We can assume that ships are supposed to be totally covered in the armour. The only question is why Galactica hasn't been made as ship shape as Columbia. You'd think extra hull protection would be a top priority.

Actually, I don't think we can assume that at all. *I* think that it shows Galactica never had extra armor over the ribbed areas, and was never meant to. Columbia is the same type of battlestar as Galactica, but in a slightly different configuration, likely due to production changes and/or improvements. Kinda like how the nuclear carrier Ronald Reagan is the same type of vessel as the Nimitz, but looks a lot different.
Posted by Mars Needs Women (Member # 1505) on :
Also, due to reused stock footage, it seems that Galactica was always "ribbed".
Posted by Johnny (Member # 878) on :
Having significantly less hull plating seems like more than a slightly different configuration, but you're right. There's not really enough information to be sure either way as to whether Galactica ever had the same amount of plating as Columbia. It seems odd to me though.
Posted by Reverend (Member # 335) on :
Perhaps it's a design choice, akin to how much of what kind of ammo you decide to carry, perhaps a certain amount or armour is optional, traded off against speed/manoeuvrability/inertia.
The question you should really ask is dose it really need the extra plating? I mean in the mini, Galactica took a DIRECT HIT from a nuke and got away with relatively minor damage and of course there's that little move Adama pulled over New Caprica that would have torn a less sturdy ship apart. In short, these bastards are well'ard.
Posted by Mars Needs Women (Member # 1505) on :
Taking a good look at the Galactica model hereit would seem that the ship has been stripped of armor, or maybe it has extra armor on critical parts.

I just saw the fourth episode, I must say that I have newfound respect for the TOS Cylon Centurion.
Posted by Reverend (Member # 335) on :
It looks like they remembered what Saul said about the old Centurions in that deleted scene, I forget the exact content but it was a recount of a quasi-Jaws/Quint/USS Indianapolis type incident. Anyway, he went on about how you could tell just how much the centurions hated humans and it seams as though the animators bore that in mind here. You can tell it has a different, more emotional demeanour than the automatons in the series.
Of course the big question is; Will we hear them speak? I'm not sure if I want them to or not.

I note that in Flashback 4 Adama wields a Miniseries-type blaster (or it might even be the Season 1 variant, I can never keep track of the differences, something about one having more surface detail than the other) despite that weapon having been magically and universally replaced by the Season 2 FN Five-seveN-based one in a way that suggested there only ever was one standard Colonial sidearm and any memories you might have that said different are delusions.

I've been hearing that Sky One in the UK will still be showing it in January. In a way, I hope this isn't true. Myself and other Brits would be able to see it on TV, but I'm sure many American viewers would download it, which can only hurt the US ratings when it premieres in April.

I love the old-school designs. The Columbia looks so much like the original Galactica it made me sad. But I'm really liking this, and am glad they're on the Sci-Fi Channel's website, so I don't have to watch Flash Gordon to see them.

Actually, I meant that they changed helmets from the salamander looking ones from the mini, to what they have now midway through season 2 and now seam to be using the "new" ones in the flashbacks two. I don't know how you thought I was going on about the original series helmet.

Yes, this would be disastrous, because then they might cancel the show and we wouldn't get a season 5. Oh, wait. . .

We were both talking about the flight suits, I thought. I already gathered from the flashbacks that the helmet was nothing like that of the original BSG, so I didn't think you were addressing that.

Yes, that would be me not paying attention. Since my last post was about the helmets, I just assumed incorrectly.
Yeah, anyway, the flight suits do have something of an original series look to them, with the shiny trim and padded chest piece. Can't say as I can exactly recall what the original looked like so I don't know how they compare, but it felt original seriesy, in a cape wearing shampoo advert kind of way.

Of course it won't hurt it from the viewers' point of view, but don't you think it'd be a shame if BSG's last season got crap ratings in the US because of this? I think it deserves better.
Posted by Lee (Member # 393) on :
Now, I have to admit that my knowledge of the Neilsen (or is it Nielsen?) system is limited, as is my knowledge of exactly how well BSG has done sccording to them. But I still maintain it won't matter. The show is ending, and presumably they're taking advantage of that to ensure it ends well, so potential for the concept to be carried on in some format (theatrical/televsion films, spinoff shows, games) may be extremely limited, and therefore not beholden to said ratings. Everyone who watches the show will still watch the show, the powers that be just won't have their little so many million/such a little percentage figure to judge it by, and we all know how meaningless those numbers are to how WE think of the show.
Perhaps, if they're faced with the reverse of the normal aituation, in that the "domestic" audience prefers not to wait for it to eventually come to their screens but gets t via the internet (just as we in the "international" audience have traditionally - or at least recently! - had to) they'll start to come round to the idea that their old system (of networks commissioning or cancelling shows under the sway of the advertising industry) isn't viable anymore. Fight the power!
Basically, they need to start thinking of the foreign sales as more than just an additional bonus. Quite often a show is sold abroad as a package deal, so much per episode and with an agreement to purchase so many episodes or seasons, regardless of quality or how it's doing in the North American market. It's then up to the foreign channels to make that money back on their broadcasts, and if the show turns out not to be popular with foreign tastes, then they don't get to ask for their money back. Quite often they might end up writing off their expenditure, especially if they buy a show that is then subsequently cancelled in the US.
To conclude, then: we, well, you need to move away from this notion that the ratings can possibly be the sole indicator of a show's success. Because they aren't, and they're meaningless anyway: how many shows can we think of that were cancelled despite high-ish ratings, for some other stoud reason like "It's not reaching our target demographic. . ."
Posted by Reverend (Member # 335) on :
...or for that matter shows that kept on going no matter how crap they got. Andromeda LEAPS to mind.

True, they may learn something from this. I hope so. It always amazes me how quickly some really innovative series seem to get canceled, while formulaic crap(I'm thinking of Smallville here, though others might disagree) can go on and on peddling the same repetitive rubbish, just because they're safe and inoffensive.
I'll always rate BSG for its quality of production and entertainment rather than its quantity of viwers(of which I have no idea anyway). I suppose I just don't like the idea that those who do pay attention to ratings might see BSG's last season went down in figures, and judge the show on that. But you're right, it doesn't matter what those people think anyway. They really wouldn't be judging the show on what matters.
Posted by OverRon (Member # 2036) on :
Yeah I definetly agree the ratings system is a little skewed nowdays and good shows are getting cancelled because of it. Like I would have like to have seen how Odyssey 5 turned out, as I thought that show had promise in it.
Me, being in the UK, I find that I just download the shows I want to watch. Moreso now, I hardly ever watch the TV any more with maybe the soul exception of The Discovery Channels. If there's something I want to watch I just download it, like Heros, Lost, Smallville, Atlantis, BSG, Desperate Housewives (sad I know but I like it ), Weeds. I'm sure there are many people who do the same, that when a new epsiode of a show is released, they download it, rather than wait the x ammount of months to be shown in their country, if they can even get it on their cable sattelite channels.
Hell I think a better Video on Demand system implemented worldwide would help the good shows. That way, when an episode is aired on an American network, it's also put into a worldwide accessable VoD system online, or thorugh other countries cable and satelite networks. That way everyone who wants to see that show, CAN see it. This would also be trackable with ratings. Of course people sill still download eps for free, but it might cut it down to just the hard core downloaders.
Anyways until that day, eMule and TVUnderground are my friends!

Well I'm showing my ignorance about why Odyssey 5 was cancelled then. I only watched it about a year ago, so I'd just assumed that it was one of them viewing figure cancellation thingie-me-bobs.
On another note, has anyone noticed that a version of Razor has been leaked, or stolen, or whatever, and put online to download? What happened there, as I thought it wasn't going to be released till the 24th?

Just saw the fifth episode. Surprise, surprise, Adama finds Cylons experimenting on humans in order to develop skinjobs. It was all very reminiscent of that lab scene from Alien Resurrection.
Though now it begs the question of why he never mentions any of this during the show.
Posted by MinutiaeMan (Member # 444) on :
Well, in the military, it's customary to not talk about past classified actions. I can easily see the Colonial fleet trying to bury these reports. Also, there's a very big difference between finding a lab with experiments on Human and biological parts, and actually having the Cylons look like Humans. It's not like it's exactly relevant to provide the whole back story, either. At least not in the TV episodes.
It's pretty cool, though, that it turns out the reports from the first flashback episode were correct: the Cylons ARE researching a superweapon.
Posted by Mars Needs Women (Member # 1505) on :
Well considering that a resurrection bathtub was present, I would think that indicates development of skinjobs.
Posted by MinutiaeMan (Member # 444) on :
But would Adama have had any idea what the bathtub was for? It's not like Adama has ever actually seen the rebirthing process.

Actually, if you recall the mini, he catches on to Leoben rather quickly and didn't seam so surprised that he was a cylon, which might indicate some foreknowledge.
Posted by Lee (Member # 393) on :
Not so much foreknowledge, as maybe confirming some suspicions he'd had following his experience. His whole speech at the decommissioning showed a certain amount of introspection regarding the nature of humanity, so it's not much of a leap from there to "We have met the enemy and they are us, only hotter and with glowing spinal cords."
