But, it was all told in a fresh enough fashion, with the caveat that unlike Stargate SG-1 where everything sci-fi they encountered was new and different, these folks ought to know more about their time and less about our own. <br /><br />Still, it was fun and it worked fairly well. The pilot banana scene was hilarious, but was played to death in previews.<br /><br />It occurred to me, though, that sci-fi mixed with humor that borrowed Trek plots was already fairly expertly done in early SG-1. Mostly that was the natural-seeming, contextual interplay between the characters. You had the cute science nerd, the history nerd, the keep-this-down-to-earth-for-the-love-of-pete leader, and the perfect alien straight-man. <br /><br />These characters . . . it'll be interesting to see what they do with them, but I don't have the sense that the interplay will be naturally hilarious. The super-strong girl played out in the pickle scene, the Teal'c like character can function, but the helm and navigation fellows are kinda bland. It's early yet, but hopefully we'll see them fleshed out better with potentially amusing character traits baked in. The second episode didn't really take us there, I have to say . . . the strong girl drinks when nervous, but other than that her trait is just youth. It's amusing enough, though it's not as outright funny as I’d hoped. I’m not sure if they’re deliberately emulating the style of TNG and Voyager for humor or for drama.<br /><br />I will confess I thought that the payoff this week with the zoo administrator and reality tv shows was hilarious. <br /><br />On the flip side, I hope they don’t keep going back to the awkward old grudges between Mercer and Grayson every single week.
