[BeginRant]

Well, I got a DVD player for Christmas.

One of the first discs I bought was "Dogma." A friend gave me "Princess Bride" as a gift. You wanna know something really funny?

There's a Special Edition of "Dogma" coming out soon. A Special Edition of "Princess Bride" is coming out later in the year. Recently, "Se7en" was replaced by the deluxe two-disc set of "Se7ev - Platinum Series", and many of my co-workers bought the new version, and were left trying to sell their older versions for about $5 a pop. Too bad I didn't care for "Se7en", but ...

What is with these studios publishing the movie and then releasing a Special Edition awhile later? Why not just wait and then just release the dammed Special Edition? For some movies, hey, it's not a big deal. I wouldn't buy a "Matrix" box-set with tons of extras, nor one for "Blazing Saddles," but I most certainly want to see the cut stuff from "Dogma."

Anyway, the point is, why the hell do these companies do this? Oh, I know the answer, to make themselves more money, in the meantime, I'm going to be stuck with two copies of "Dogma" ... (and wasting time checking out some DVD Resource Pages to make sure the next DVD I buy won't be replaced in two weeks by an extras-loaded "Special Edition")

Oh, by the way, the Indy Jones Trilogy is set to come out in 2002 ... and ST-TNG will be released on DVD later this year. TMP-SE got pushed back to the third quarter also. The "Highlander: Endgame" release will be a two-disc set with both the American movie release, the director's cut, and a shit-load of extras, including lots of commentaries and even a game of some sort. Anyway, that comes out Fed. 20th if anyone is interested -- I know I am! Clerks: The Animated Series is out in Febuary also, and Roughnecks: The Animated Starship Troopers comes out May 13th. Cheers!

[/EndRant]

(Silly me ... I typed "being" when I meant to type "begin" ... HAH!)

This is why I wait for the DVD's to go on sale after a year. But there are times when I buy things because they advertise it like crazy. One exception is the DVD for Queer As Folk, which I plan to purchase as soon as I finish this reply.

I come here to escape & you fuckers make me bring work here? Bastards.

Why do they do it? Simple. Money. Because they know you'll buy it. Just like releasing the DVD before the VHS--if any VHS at all.

Fuck "Clerks." It sucked. The show, not the film. Indy will actually be 2004, after the 4th film is made. "Star Wars?" 2006 for the sextology, & it'll probably be on optical reader discs....although we're told that "Phantom Plotline" is theoretically being released in 4th quarter.

The Star Wars SE-box came out in november, and sold out. I don't want the crappy swedish version with the subtitles, I don't need that, but the guys say there's no way, NO WAY, to get another box of SW:SE without subtitles. It was a collector's edition.
Yeah right. There won't be any more copies without subtitles, mmhmm. Why should there be? It's not like any americans want it, eh?
Any of you know how I can get a hold of the SE-widescreen box?

I got a DVD player in December. My gripe, everything is always widescreen. I can tolerate the 16x9 widescreen, but I don't like the smaller letterbox format. I always thought they gave you the option on how to view the movie.

X-Men will be re-released with a special edition DVD too.

Some do, Hobbes. Honestly, I prefer the widescreen format ... especially 2.35:1, but that's just me

I think Blazing Saddles, Contact, Fallen, Princess Bride offer both pan & scan and WS (from my own collection).

You can always buy a bigger TV =)

I think they're releasing that Dune mini-series on DVD ...

From www.thedigitalbits.com ...

And before we go, we figured some of you would enjoy more details about Artisan's Frank Herbert's Dune. The 2-disc set will street on March 20th. For an SRP of $24.98, you'll get the complete 6 hour Sci-Fi Channel miniseries (with footage not seen by American audiences) in anamorphic widescreen with English Dolby Digital 5.1 audio. You'll also get some nifty supplemental materiels, including a featurette, a photo gallery, cast & crew bios, the "theatrical" trailer, TV spots, production notes and DVD-ROM featurettes as well. We really enjoyed this miniseries here at the Bits, and we can't wait for it on DVD - very cool!

Nimrod: For the Star Wars Video box, try e-mailing to this address: [email protected] (in English) and see if they do out of country shipments. It'll cost you some more, but they'll send it to you, if they do They have both the full-screen and the wide-screen version. They are called 'Sorry, No Subtitles'

Anyone who has access to an Entertainment Weekly Magazine, they have an article in there of the Top 50 DVDs to get right now.

I myself only have 3 DVDs (Trek 2, Trek 6, and Matrix), and right now they can only be run on my PlayStation 2, but my dad bought a Pioneer Elite DVD player that will be hooke dup as soon as we find a bigger shelf to hold all the equipment for the TV on.

Some of the big DVDs for me to get will be the Ultimate Terminator 2, Jurrasic Park Box Set, Planet of the Apes Box Set, all 3 James Bond box sets, and (if it's out), the movie "Grand Prix".

I don't own a DVD player, yet, but I've been told that a lot of movies have Letterbox on one side of the disc and a full size version on the other side. I love letterbox myself.

"Fight Club" is awesome on DVD. There's a whole second disc of supplemental info. Same for "Magnolia", actually. Not all DVDs offer an option of WS v PS.

Some do Kosh. The only I have that does is "The Whole Nine Yards". 16x9 widescreen is fine with me, it's the smaller 4x3 letterbox I hate. I guess because B5 is in widescreen on Sci-Fi I've gotten use to it.

I also have "Gladiator" which is an excellent DVD. It has a choice of 16x9 and 4x3, plus a second disc of special features. Now if they could just put the deleted scenes in the movie where they would of been that be cool.

Nimrod: And if they can't help you, just find someone who lives in the UK. There are still plenty SW-SE video box sets still available here. Tesco's has loads.
