If music companies really want to stop people from downloading songs from places like napster, why don't they do the following:
1. There would be a place where you can search for individual songs .

2. there, you can add what
individual songs you want on a cart, just like you do with books on amazon.

3. the companies can charge around 2 or 3 bucks per song.

See, this way, people would not be obligated to be entire albums, but can buy individual songs instead. The music companies would still make money cause the song buying site would have to pay for the songs. (hopefully, they would get a bulk rate). Or maybe, for the big music companies, they, can have their own song buying site.

There are a couple sites that do that already....Songfile.com ? I think...

I tell you this, though. I have purchased more cd's by listening to some of its songs on mp3 than I ever have.

The demise of the album is possibly the single largest reason behind the recording industry's battle against music in electronic formats.

I perfer MP3s personally. The CDs I have are Star Trek movie sountracks, and a Stargate soundtrack. At $17 a CD, it's not worth it to buy a CD just because I like one or two songs on it.

Then there's singles, which are cheaper, but it's easier to have all my favorite songs in one place than a bunch of CDs stacked up.

I know the record companies say they're losing money because of MP3s, and they may be right. Speaking for myself, they're not losing money because I wouldn't of bought the CD anyway.

In the past year, I've bought 27 albums. 23 of those I bought because I listened to the songs (or, at least, most of the songs) beforehand. Granted, only three of those are directly attributeable to MP3s (the others I mostly heard by renting them from the library), but the concept is still the same. MP3 is perfect for "try-before-you-buy", and, w/o that, they'd definitely be losing money.

27? Cool!

I say this because it sounds like a lot, and because I have bought, like, maybe ten this year. Hardly any albums at all, really.

Well, you see, before I had a car, I didn't really buy any CDs, because I couldn't get to the store on my own. I've only had my car since October. So the 27 albums I've bought since then are almost my entire collection. :-)
