With the gaming and the stuff.

Just curious what people think of the announcements. (e.g. $600 US for a fully loaded PS3 (!!), people swinging their Wii controllers around, Halo 3 in 2007, MGS4)

I'm excited about Spore, but I was already excited about Spore last year.

So you've probably already seen this, but for those who haven't there was an incredible gameplay demo last year. Mind you, this is a very LONG video, but it's really incredible. Awe-inspiring scale. If Cartman were still alive he'd say something clever and sort of sardonic about procedural generation.

This is the first or second year that I truly don't have any interest in e3, as long as there is no info on Neverwinter Nights II, Diablo III, a new Far Cry for PC or S.T.AL.K.E.R.

I don't give a rat's ass about any console news ever since they outlawed making future Resident Evil titles for PC, nor do I care about the Civ/AoE/WoW buzz.

Plus, all the sites I usually go to (Shacknews, Gamespot etc) are whores who use E3 as a way to make kids pay bucks for downloading EXKLUSIVE HD-MOV CONTENT, neglecting to mention that two weeks from now the files will have been spread anyway, all the way to the Dar es Salaam Post website.

I really, really should buy Resi 4... And a DS, but I'm waiting for the Lite version to come out in the US, as it'll be cheaper to import that than the Japanese version.

I should check up on the E3 news. I'm still disappointed that the 360 has been out for several months now, and there are still no games that make me go "oh yes I must play that now I am moist". I mean, Gotham Racing 3 and Top Spin 2 are nice and all, but not really, y'know, grrr.

Yes, you're despicable, and... and picable... and... and you're definitely, definitely despicable. How a person can get so despicable in one lifetime is beyond me. It isn't as though I haven't met a lot of people. Goodness knows it isn't that. It isn't just that... it isn't... it's... it's despicable.

Personally, I find that the next gen systems are too exspensive and as Liam pointed out there aren't very many good games for them. I much rather just begin updating my PC to higher specs to play games with higher graphics. BTW, What would you say is the best graphics card out there, I'm looking more at N'Vidia graphics cards but I'm open to any suggestions. I'm hoping to have my computer play them there Doom 3's and F.E.A.R.'s.

Cartman, dead?

I ought to leaven my claim to hipness by saying that I haven't owned a console since the Nintendo 64 (and still haven't beaten Rogue Squadron), and haven't actually paid money for a computer game in. . . well, awhile.

Really, I'm almost more interested in Spore from a, I don't know, design point of view than anything else. Like how I find The Sims completely mindblowing in its intentions and execution, but a couple hours playing it several years ago was enough for me. Not that I'm expecting disappointment or anything. I mean, controlled evolution plus space battles or something!

Also it isn't a sequel.

(Also, I worry that I'm entering that ugly stage of life when the attractions of youth are starting to slide into uncomfortably novel forms, and I spend all my time complaining about how it's all been downhill since Goldeneye.)

Mars Needs Women: Yeah, I'd go with Nvidia. I have an ATI Radeon 9800 Pro for the moment but in the new games they're developing, it's always the ATI cards they have to release extra patches for and some mistakes (like *cough* tiger-striped textures) they've carried with them for years without ever learning how to fix or compensate for.

Oh my god, did I just end a sentence with a preposition?

Thanks Nim, but what exactly is their most powerful graphics card for a desktop PC? Is it the GeForce 7900?

I'm only a few minutes into the "Spore" video, but I'm impressed by the fact that, when the player attacks another little creature, it's accompanied by the old-school Trek fight music.

Yes, I heard that too. No torn shirts, though.

MNW: Well to be frank I don't think one needs to hold a gun to Nvidia's head to make them tell you what is their best card and just how freaking much you should buy it, whatever the cost may be.

Although, there is of course the plethora of manufacturers (using the Nvidia platform) to choose from. I've had four Nvidia cards, I usually go with Creative or Sapphire because of their generally high level of quality, but I hear Asus is good too. They usually only did ATI-driven cards but I guess they swing both ways nowadays. Let the record show that I scoff slightly, but that it was a good-humored scoff.

I won't buy a new card until I have a new computer with PCI-express buses, and since my 3GHz Dell still can hold its own, my guess is that won't be until 2008.

As for Spore, if it isn't going to be one of those novelty artsy games that cost 30-40% more than mainstream games (like realMyst or all them Collector's Editions) I might buy it, just to build myself an Ohmu, or perhaps a Snarf.

Yes...a whole village of Snarves...merry, frolicking...just before the meteor shower. With release.

I'm watching the video and Spore does look good. I mean to go through the evolution of life on your custom planet is wicked awesome. Though I wonder what system it will come out for. Obviously hoping for it being on PC. Searching the web I found an article saying the creator is considering the Nintendo Wii(or however its spelled). Truth be told, I have been one to purchase a game system for just to play a single game.

I am ordering a Wii as soon as pre-orders are available (go on with your penis jokes). It is promising by far the most interesting gaming experience of the big 3. Knowing Nintendo, I would be very surprised if the price point were higher than $250-300.

Spore is a PC game. I mean, at the moment.

Assuming one has the stomach to tell a cashier one totally wants a Wii, I'd imagine the must-have games would be the new Zelda (and I did buy the 64 almost specifically for Ocarina of Time) and maybe, I don't know, Super Mario Galaxy? And/or Metroid Prime 3, if you're into that sort of thing. (Whiny complaint: I never liked the Gamecube controller, specifically the triggers/Z buttons, because they offered too much resistance and made my fingers extra tired, especially while trying to play Metroid Prime. Also, and cc'd to Bungie: backtracking does not equal added value.)

I know a few people already who are seriously considering the Wii just for the new Smash Bros. game.
