I've been working for the Vacations company for almost six months now. My contract is ending, and they have informed me that they do not intend to keep me past my term. Their decision is purely financial, they cannot justify keeping me there when there are three other people doing the same thing.

So I go looking for a job. A few weeks ago, I answered an ad for a Technical Support position at Roxio, the guys who make the Easy CD Creator. They had an onsite Job Fair which I could not go to, so instead I sent in my resume.

Two weeks ago, they sent me an e-mail requesting a phone interview. When I did answer them, they informed me that my desired slot was taken and they would have to bump me to a timeslot a few days later.

So, at the prescribed time, I sit down with my cellphone and anxiously await the phone call. 10 minutes go by. Then 20. What is going on?

I look at my cellphone. To my horror it says "No Service". Yet I am in a serviceable area. I'm in the clear open.

I switch my cellphone off. Then back on. Service is resumed. Then I get notification that I got a voice message. I check my voicemail.

It would appear that they have been trying to contact me for 15 minutes. And yet my Cellphone decided to pick a perfect time to go on strike. Because they have a ton of other applicants to speak to, they will not be contacting me further unless they have any new openings.

FUCK!!!!

I lost a potential job because my Cell decided to crap out on me. With my current job ending days away, it looks like I'm facing the unemployment line. With my current streak of luck I guess the only job I can probably secure is a Burger flipper.

*sigh* [Frown]

This most likely isn't the answer you're looking for, but try contacting a temp-placement service.

Or, failing that... do what we did. Start your own company.

Whatever you do, don't give up. It sucks major ass to have to go through the job-search.

Now, if you have 5+ years with BIAXOPVC sheet and tenter equipment, give me a call. Otherwise, good luck!

Didn't someone recently post an article about a woman who sued her e-mail provider because their service failed, resulting in the loss of a rather good job?

This happened here in the Rochester area. (Dunno if this is the same person in the article...) She had one of those random loss of services occure during a phone interview, and she lost the job. So she sued Frontier (the cellphone people) and got somthing like $2million.

I hate phone interviews. You can't tell anything about a person by yammering with them on the phone. The best way to assess someone is a face2face meeting. [Smile]

Well, even though I got screwed here, I don't agree with the assessment that the cellphone company should be sued. I'm going to switch providers. Very soon.

This has happened to me once or twice, usually when I'm on the Tube so it's hardly my provider's fault.

Eric: Where were you when you were waiting for this call? Were you at home? Do you not have a land-line?

1) No, I don't have a land line.

2) I was at work at the time. Can't ask them to call my work number as it is monitored.

Never depend on a cell phone.

Where I live, it is very difficult to get a signal. If you move from one room to another, you lose signal. Mine didn't work at all, unless I walked about an 8th of a mile toward the mouth of the hollow.

Ritten: Okay, True. But then, who actually puts their work number on their resume? Most people nowadays tend to put their cellphone number as it is the only number in which they can be consistently reached at any time of the day.

True, as I would do the same, but I also like putting a regular number down also...

*can't imagine life without her cell phone* I love it.... it's the only phone I use at this point, and I'm lucky enough to have pretty good coverage most of the time - sorry 'bout your situation though, Tahna - that REALLY sucks [Frown]

I apologise for this, but when you move back to the first room, do you declare "We get signal!" in a loud, excitable voice?

Yes, you're despicable, and... and picable... and... and you're definitely, definitely despicable. How a person can get so despicable in one lifetime is beyond me. It isn't as though I haven't met a lot of people. Goodness knows it isn't that. It isn't just that... it isn't... it's... it's despicable.
