If we assume for a moment that the claims that the next Star Trek series will not actually be called Star Trek are true, then it seems to me that this provides a chance to suss out the name of the show before it is announced.

Namely, if the show is called, to use one old and very silly rumor, "Excellent," it seems to me that Paramount will want to set up an excellent.com or uss-excellent.com or something similar. Now, this site might be nothing more than a redirect to the "series V" portion of startrek.com, but still. Has anyone been keeping tabs on Paramount's URL registration activities?

(As I type this, I realize there are probably entire legions of fans who spend their days doing just this and nothing but. This is the sort of idea I'd probably mention in passing on ICQ to, say, Tim, who would then gently but firmly mock my parentage for suggesting such an obvious thing. Furthermore, I'd do it myself, but my URL-looking-up skills are limited to searches for amusingly dirty words and the names of friends and family.)

Not in the same search, though, I hope? Unless you have the inclination to view such things.

Interestingly enough ...

Paramount bought the domain for StarTrekEnterprise.Com ...

And despite what Berman or Fuller or whomever might talk about, I don't think Paramount would allow them to put out a series without Star Trek in the title.

Actually I just checked domain.com and all these three:

startrekenterprise.com
startrekenterprise.net
startrekenterprise.org

were not available...

hmmmmm.

I never said that they created a website. Just that they bought it.

Enterprise is only a slightly less stupid name for a series than Excellent.

Star Trek as a franchise has grown so far beyond being just about the Enterprise and her crew, I feel that going back to that formula would be a big mistake. And naming the show after the ship would even worse. They did it with Voyager, and it worked. I worked with DS9. Don't do it again...

I disagree.

While certainly DS9 worked without benefit of being set aboard the Enterprise, Star Trek's roots are with the starship which bears that name.

"Space. The Final Frontier. There are the voyages of the Starship Enterprise, it's continuing missions: to explore strange new worlds, to seek out new life, and new civilizations. To boldly go where no one has gone before!"

I'd love to hear those words over the intro credits any day of the week and four point nine-seven-one on Sunday!

Sorry, but your logic does not resemble our Earth logic.

Seriously, you're saying that naming the show after the ship worked for DS9, and it worked for Voyager, so they should never do it again? Huh?

And I'd argue that Star trek has grown beyond being about the Enterprise. maybe for the hard-core fans it has, but not to the mainstream public. The people that would never call themselves Trekkers, but watched TNG. The people who have no idea what DS9 or Voyager are about, but who cold tell a Klingon from a Romulan. The non-fans who, during First Contact, explained who the Borg were to other non-fans. To those people, Star Trek IS the Enterprise and her crew. The public adapted to the idea of Star Trek not being about Kirk, but they didn't catch on to the show being about different Starfleet crews. To them, Star Trek = Enterprise. And Alexander Courage's fanfare.

Yeah. Perhaps that's why Voyager is so unpopular - it was one non-Enterprise show too far. DS9, sure, it's one of those places the Enterprise visited a couple of times, now you get to see what happens after they've warped away to next week's adventure. But Voyager? Who cares? There's nothing for you to relate to.

Is it, though? There's a certain hardcore group of fans who don't like it, but outside of that? It seems to me the only genre show that garners any attention at all from the mainstream is Buffy.

Sorry, I'm not THAT internet Savvy... I thought when domain names were taken... that there is a 'placeholder' page there - like "this domain has been taken yadda yadda". Not just that it "didn't exist".

Buffy deserves it. It pissed on Voyager from a great height. (Now THAT's a strange mental image).

Altough Angel's better.

But still, there were non-Trekkers who would actually make a bit of an effort to watch TNG. I have friends who'd never be caught DEAD with any Star Trek merchandise in their rooms, but they'd still know who Q is. People might watch Voyager if it's on, but I don't think they'd go much out of their way to watch it.

It is probably easier to digest that DS9. But still, Paramount needs that large portion of people who watch TNG back again. And reusing an Enterprise seems an obvious way to start.

So far I've seen one ep each of Buffy and Angel this season. I begin to see why Friday nights is a killer time for episodic TV.
