I have been wrong several times lately o:, but I'm risking my reputation to revive this forum . There might be a Centaur (*the* Centaur?) in "Behind the Lines". When the Defiant, commanded by Dax, returns from the mission to destroy the sensor array, a Centaur-like ship can be seen in the lower right corner (rather than a Miranda I think).

Gah! I can't believe someone else did the exact same research as me, albeit a couple minutes sooner. From Alidar Jarok's, by the way.

Sure looks like a Centaur to me.

I did a search through those episodes a few weeks ago...if that is a Centaur, it's the only appearance of one.

Well, if it's a Miranda, it's quite misproportioned.

Perhaps that is the only appaearance of the Centaur that doesn't come from "A Time to Stand". Maybe those FX guys are teasing us again.

*tells self he must learn to spell Miranda*

This is a Centaur type ship.
In a Miranda type ship, about 50% of the length of the nacelle is "slung" underneath the primary hull.
For the ship in question, about 10 to 15% of the nacelle is underneath the primary hull. This comfirms with what is known about the Centaur type ship.
A digression: The Centaur type ship may have the designation "destroyer", as opposed to "medium cruiser" [DS9TM]. In "Sacrifice of Angels", Captain Sisko mentions destroyers commanded by Captains Diego and Reynolds. Captain Reynolds is captain of the USS Centaur. The fact that the USS Centaur may have a designation may argue against the assertion put forth by the DS9TM that the ship was a warship recently built using the parts of salvaged ships. Why spend the effort in giving a ship or a grouping of ships a designation if they are to be temporarily used?

All ships have designations. There's no rational reason why they wouldn't. But the Reynolds in SoA was not described as part of a destroyer wing (IIRC), and it needn't even be the same Reynolds.

I wouldn't put too much weight on the DS9 Technical Manual's statements regarding making ships from spare parts.

Oh no! The designations discussions are expanding everyone! The Officers' Lounge, other Starships threads...

To me the Centaur is a real class and not a kitbash. Anyway, it may be speculated if the Centaur has survived the mission in Dominion territory or if this is another ship of this class.

It's best to ignore anything mentioned in the Ships Section (specs or otherwise) in the DS9TM. The whole back of the book is a dog's dinner. The Kitbash Section is the biggest joke of all. There, I've said my piece.

Must...defend...tech manual!

Well, not all of it, of course. Of course, it's a bit of a catch-22, isn't it? I can imagine Sternbach...

"Well, we've got this puppy ready to go."

"Hey, what about other starships? Fans like their starships, you know."

"But I haven't really worked on many of these ships. Not in awhile, anyway."

"A buh buh buh! Fans like ships."

If there were no ships, we'd be complaining too. Well, I would. But I'm a contrary fellow.

I honestly would have prefered it without the ships - unless they did it properly, of course. Alot of the specs are unbelievable and/or create more confusion than anything else. The pics make nice scans (excluding the rubbish kitbash ones).

The kitbashes would be so much easier to swallow if we'd actually SEEN any of the damn things! Apart from a ship that sort-of looks like the Centaur, and one that sort-of looks like the Curry, and one that sort-of looks like the Yeager. . .
