..And I weep. I weep for a world in which a brilliantly fantastic show like Firefly can be cancelled in less than a year, and yet a mangled piece of dreck like Andromeda can continue on for at least another season and a half.

At least SG-1 has been renewed for another season. Small comfort, at best.

I honestly didn't enjoy the two episodes of FireFly I watched. I knew it would be cancelled when I first heard about it. May it rest in peace with Dark Angel.

I'm really hoping they'll get picked up by a smaller station: UPN, WB, even FX. I think that'd probably be a better match anyway.

I pray that the show gets picked up by some other station, any station -- even UPN.

Hell, if UPN bought "Firefly" as the lead-out show for "Enterprise," I could guarantee I'd stick around to watch both, assuming that Firefly doesn't dive in quality.

The simple fact is, that quality storytelling is not what the majority of people want for television entertainment these days. First "Farscape," now "Firefly." I'm starting to lose hope in the television industry, for all but a select few writers.

You're just now beginning to lose faith in the television industry? I started losing it way back with Who Wants to Marry a MultiMillionaire?.

I'm sorry to see Firefly go (especially since I haven't been able to catch an episode yet), but at least the people in charge of the show are looking for some other network to take it over. There's hope in that.

Well, not really. But the fact was that before this, there was at least one show in production at any time that I honestly enjoyed. "Firefly," "Farscape," "Babylon 5," "Deep Space Nine," and even "Andromeda" for a while. There was at least ONE quality television series that was producing new episodes for me to enjoy.

But right now, I've got nothing left but TNG reruns, a small handful of "Firefly" eps to be aired when Fox deigns to release them, and the cold knowledge that the 11 remaining new "Farscape" episodes will lead up to an incredible and never-to-be-resolved cliffhanger.

"Enterprise"? Yeah, I'll probably watch it for a while yet, but it's hardly fulfilling at all. "Andromeda" has become a thoughtless shoot-em-up that I haven't watched since last season. TNG reruns will provide me with reasonable quality, but I've seen them all, so there's nothing new. "Nemesis" will provide a brief respite (since I'm assuming that I'll enjoy it based on fan reactions so far), but it's only a two-hour movie.

There ain't that much else out there worth my while. I've thought about getting into "Stargate," but I've never been fond of jumping into a series mid-stream. B5 reruns have been postponed on Sci-Fi for now, and I can't afford the DVD sets. And Sci-Fi hasn't shown a single "Farscape" rerun in over a year (aside from "Fractures" which was basically a cliffhanger before the season-ending arc).

Did the thought strike you that quality television may well still be out there, provided you don't mind there being no spaceships or aliens in it?

Two of those non-spaceship shows are even helmed by Joss Whedon. I mean, if that's the sort of thing you're looking for.

I don't know for sure, but I gather that Farscape doesn't have a major cliffhanger at the end of this season. . . It's more of a "Hope and Fear" than a "Unimatrix Zero, Part I."

Lee, how dare you compare "Farscape" to such travesties as "Unimatrix Zero"! [Wink]

But I get the gist. I hope it's true, otherwise I'll be looking for copies of the "Omega 13" episode...

What little I saw of "Firefly" I rather enjoyed, despite the Western genre influences; I'm not a big fan of Western stuff. However, I usually work Friday nights, there's only one working VCR at the moment, it's my roommate's, & we use it as a TV tuner. And he likes to watch that stupid ass sports show with Tom Arnold. So.

But yeah..it's a cool premise, & I'm not a fan of Whedon's other..um, "sanguinary works" at all. The funny thing is, it reminds me a lot of "Cowboy Bebop" in someways, & I'd have to say that "Bebop" is perhaps the best sci-fi show I've ever seen, even if it is animated. The tech is incidental to the plots, it's massively character-driven, it's close enough to our own time that we can relate to it, & I love film noir style.

And hey...doesn't the Federation or whatever it is in "Firefly" remind anyone else of the Federation in "Blake's 7?"

Naw, more like the Federation in "Starship Troopers". After all, they use the same grey motif, nasty attitude, and armor props. [Razz]

SG-1 comes back in January. Small comforts...
