Or injuction, or conjugation, or whatever that word is. So again the planets are sweeping out their epic arcs into mystical alignments and familiar configurations. And with them the long forgotten gathering of the NWUS sons and daughters of Flare may finally occur. Like in December. Like in late December. Like my sister and I will be driving up to Washington to visit the grandparents (in the fun lovin', dirty soundin', but clean livin' town of Sequim, WA) for Xmas around December 20th and departing around the 27th if we all wanted to get together and have, like, beers (or root beers) (or bottled waters) (or perhaps even some of them fine coffee beverages your cold and damp region is so fond of leveraging on the rest of us). Would folks be interested in this at all? Could there be pooty? And what about pleh? It could be fun.

Yay! I LOVE Pooty and pleh! *L*

I'd be interested.... though I've got to warn you..... if the pass is icky, you prolly won't be seein' me........... [Razz]

I'll endeavor to make any passes as un-icky as possible. I can't speak for Simon, however. (Who I'm hoping might make a rare appearance)

I suspect that Seattle would be a nice central spot to meet. I realize that Sequim and PA are the spots farthest from the bright center of the universe and all, and while Seattle isn't exactly geographically centered, folks probably know the town, and there's all sorts of beverage options. We can all sit around and talk about how cool Sleater Kinney is and thumb our noses at the colorful and assymetric Jimi Hendix Museum. Who knows a good pub in Seattle? Or a restaurant. We could be ultra nerdy and make it the Space Needle, but that'd be, like, testing the limits. No, I think a pub sounds like a good bet. With the food and the beverages. Everyone's over 21, are they not?

Truth is, that I don't know, maybe y'all think Olympia would be better? I don't know. When you all come to SF, I'll take you on the Star Fleet to-be tour (using Reverend's map), but until then, you know the area far better than I do. I just think it'd be fun or amusing or something to meet each other face to face, like those dirty, dirty British Flareites.

This is me soliciting suggestions for cool Seattle Pubs/Bars.

I wanna meet at Hooters.

Hooters? Ewww...

Posted by Peregrinus (Member # 504) on :

*looks at LOA sadly* I'd kinda like to avoid chains or franchises. This is a Seattle (okay, PNW) thing, so let's keep it local, eh?

Well, there the J&M down in Pioneer Square. It's something of a classic... I know there are several in the U District, but I've been out of touch there for a while and would be happy to ask my friends who live in that area... There was a microbrewery in Fremont, just across the bridge, but I don't know if it's still there... And there are always places down closer to the sports arenas, but I don't know what's good in that area. My favorite restaurant around that part of town (Umberto's) closed many years ago... And there are certainly some places on Broadway, too...

For restaurants, there's Cutter's, just North of the Pike Place Market. Has a nice bar, good food, but a little pricey... I can't be 100% certain it's survived the tides of time, but there was a nice Italian place near Pioneer Square called Trattoria Michelli, that also had a nice bar... I don't know how y'all feel about ethnic/regional food, but the Wild Ginger has excellent Asian cuisine and Costas is an awesome Greek restaurant...

If you want places I frequet when I'm in town, they're mostly on Bainbridge Island (the old hometown), like San Carlos or the Harbor Pub, but one of my regular Seattle haunts (if you don't mind classic -- albeit quite good -- diner fare) is the 5 Spot on Queen Anne Hill. My friend Matt's a waiter there.

But it's so... generic. The food isn't even very good. If you're in a franchise mood, you could at least go for one that started in Seattle, like Red Robin or The Old Spaghetti Factory. Jeez...

Hm... Hooters has a nice bar, though. Maybe gather one place for food and conversation, then adjourn to Hooters for after-dinner drinks and noisy fun?

I am so up for parties.

But.

I would probably not survive the trip, because the Big City scares me. Plus I am boring. "Let's all go to the bookstores, of which Seattle has many!" This is all I've got.

I did manage to drive to Bellevue, so as to see Alien on Halloween, though I had other people in the car to guide me, and traffic was surprisingly light. Then I got lost in Issaquah. (For donuts!) I kind of know where Valve HQ is. And that's all I've got, for real this time.

(Mike Doughty is going to be in Seattle on the 18th! Oh, if only.)

Well, LOA, there are no Red Robins in Houston. Should we meet up in the summer, I definitely won't be taking you there. Hooters, on the other hand, we'd have to talk about.

Posted by Peregrinus (Member # 504) on :

Sol, I'd be happy to guide you, and would love to spend an afternoon wandering the University Book Store, Zanadu, or Golden Age Collectibles. [Big Grin]

P.S. There are two Red Robins in Houston -- one at Marq-E and one at Westchase.

Sadly enough, I was secretly hoping for some booktrawling action. Even more than I was hoping for Hooters. I must be getting old. Or something.

RE: Hooters. Oh, LOA you just don't want to be the only one we're ogling. Bring your sister. *pistolwink*

As Peregrinus suggests, I think Hooters might better be an after-gathering treat (one which I'm totally down for, btw). My vote would be for someplace non-chain oriented with some character and a decent vegetarian selection.

Also, what day would be best for people? You probably have jobs. It's likely that my sole responsibility while I'm up there will be the consuming of grandma's delicious cookies, and while I do take this task very seriously, I find the schedule is somewhat maleable.

Damn Marq-E Red Robin..... always competing against us, always winning. Grrr-ness...

And as for bringing my sister, I CAN, if you want, but I'm warning ya - she's a man. It'd still be like I'm the only girl there.... besides, I don't mind being the only one ogled [Wink]

Well as Trattoria Mitchelli is easy walking distance from the Ferry terminal, is apparently still in existence, and seems like a good spot, let's do that one. Though the 5 Spot does sound friendly too. How would Sunday the 21st, or Monday the 22nd strike people?

So a tentative itinerary for whatever day:

~ 3PM Vaguely Organized Attendance Optional Bookstore Trawl
~ 6PM Dinner at Trattoria Mitchelli w/ drinks
~ 8PM Naked pictures of/with Liz
~10PM Getting snookered at Hooters, LOA gets her shirt back
~ 4AM-forever taunting Omega from Kinko's with above mentioned pictures

Sound good?

Tentative itinerary looks good. So no Return of the King? Oh, and we'd have to pick a specific book store. Want something downtown, or would you be looking to start at the University Book Store?

My personal vote would be for the U Book Store, then over to Fremont to hit the Seattle Book Center, Shorey's Books, B. Brown & Associates, and SeaOcean Book Berth, then into downtown to hit Zanadu Comics and Golden Age Collectibles, and finish at the Elliot Bay Book Company, which is about a block away from Trattoria Mitchelli...

I'm cool with whatever. The only caveat being that I am unsure of what my exact vehicular situation will be, and so something closer to the Ferry Terminals would probably be a safe bet.

Posted by Peregrinus (Member # 504) on :

In that case, I vote for meeting for the book store crawl at the Soundview Caf in the Pike Place Market. Then after exhausting the possiblities of the Market, we can wend up Stewart or Virginia to Zanadu Comics, and eventually down to Elliot Bay Book Co.

Unless you don't mind taking the bus, which we may have to do anyway to get to Hooters -- unless someone at dinner will have car space for everyone. *chuckle*

--Jonah

P.S. I saw the first two installments of the LotR trilogy in groups. I've seen all the Star Wars movies in groups. You get to nudge each other when something cool happens, you get to see other people's reactions, and you get to talk about it after. I think it would be fun, but we'll see...

I'd be working Sunday.

And I'm sure no one wants to see Return of the King with me, since lately I've been all about the Marxist deconstruction. But, come on, who says Gondor even wants a king? Especially one who harbors notions of a Numenorian master race.

But I kid.

I'm in. Someone should have told me about this topic earlier.

If we haven't already settled upon a meeting place (a couple of candidates have been mentioned alreaddy)... Zeek's Pizza, near the Seattle Center (at the Chief Seattle statue)?

It would give you guys the chance to drop by the Infopop offices practically next door, thus get the chance to thank the man employing me and thus basically keeping this place afloat. [Smile]

I shall provide a camera and another dose of facial hair. However, Liz will probably castrate me if the resulting photos show up online.

Posted by LOA (Member # 49) on :

Charles, I'm with TSN - I just assumed that you know everything that is said in this forum - ever. [Wink]

And I'm still quasi-in, maybe, we'll see.... it's all about the road conditions and all.... got in a car accident on weds, and I WASN'T going over an icky pass, so I don't know that it's safe to try to drive to Seattle right now. We'll have to see what the pass keeps doing as the time gets closer.

Unless I fly. Which may happen anyway, since I'm wanting to see my Gay Boys for Christmas. But I'm not sure if that's happening yet..... I keep having REALLY bad, depressing days, and when that happens, I shop, so now that I have a new wardrobe, 3 new pairs of shoes, a TON of new CD's, and Satellite radio, I'm feeling a little bit better, but my money supply is massively dwindled. Figure that out [Razz]

Anyway, we'll see.... make your plans and I'll see what I can come up with.

And no pictures. Charles will die. *smite*

WOW, a real life bearded-one encounter. What will I say? Whatever will I wear!? What to say!?!

Meeting up at Zeek's Pizza with a potential InfoPop tour after we're good and soused sounds entirely appropriate to me. Would we be able to see the servers on which this board is being hosted? God, that would be kinda weird. And cool. I may need a ride from the Ferries. Not sure.

LOA, we'd love for you to make it, but I'm sure we'd understand if you couldn't.

I will bring what facial hair I can muster, but it's probably going to be somewhat disappointing among the parade of proper beards.

Now I'm really tempted to drive up over to Tennessee just to harrass Omega for a couple days. I could bring my trumpet and annoy him with my poor musicial skills and horrible selections of songs. I bet I could have him throwing eggs at me before I even finished the first movement of Hummel's trumpet concerto.

Once I lure him outside, I bonk him on the head, tie him up, and bring him back to Houston where I will force him to live in my closet and clean up after my cat while wearing a French maid outfit.

Hey, Balaam. You'll be coming via the Bainbridge ferry, right? I'll be staying with my parents on the island. Want to meet up in Winslow early, hit the Eagle Harbor Bookstore, and go over on the ferry as a trio? I could even drive, if you like, although I much prefer the bus.

That sounds like a fine plan, P. I may have a car. It sort of depends on which day and stuff. But it sounds like it makes sense to meet up in Winslow.

Things to consider -- ferry fare (both ways), traffic, parking. I hate driving in urban situations if I can help it. And, thanks to Seattle having the best bus system in the country, I can. Just go straight up Marion to Third Avenue and catch the #3 or #4. It drops us right there at Tillikum Place.

Or, heck, I'd be happy strolling up to Westlake Center and catching the monorail. Since this is Jen's first time in my old stomping grounds, I'm looking forward to showing her everything I love about Seattle, and if you're with us, you're likely to learn a lot about whatever part of Downtown we're going through -- which is one of the best ways to get to know who I am, and I believe that was a large part of what this whole thing's about in the first place *laugh*.

I'm aware of at least one three-street intersection in St. Louis. It's just a regular intersection, pretty much.

Maybe our little get-together could include the highpoints of Seattle's traffic systems. Or maybe we could all press sea-salt into each others eyes and nostrils.

This may go without saying, but the 24th/25th are off-limits for me on account of family. Would Saturday the 27th work for people? Or how about Friday the 26th? Is it right to assume that people are working during the week? Because, I mean, Simon is the only one who's really given us a specific day that won't work, namely the 21st.

Okay, kids.... bad news..... unless some miracle happens and ALL of the snow on the pass melts by the time this shin-dig happens, I won't be making it. I WAS going to be flying to Seattle in that general time frame so I could see some friends for the holidays, but due to random situations outside of my control, they will both be coming so see ME now, so flying isn't going to happen. Moral of the story: You'll only see me if I can drive there and back in the same day. Which will only happen if all of the snow melts. So, here's to praying for a heat wave! [Razz]

So, I would love to do this, and could even meet up with other friends of mine from college who are in the area now, and make, like, a whole trip out of it. But, we'd need to make concrete plans, and I for one am bad at concreteness. Plus, there is an angry swirlly cloud stretching from here to the Aleutians. So.

It's my birthday so I get to be bossy. My sister and I are driving back down on Saturday and that's going to take pretty much all day. So, Friday. Friday it is. Friday at around 6:30PM at Zeek's Pizza in Seattle.

Zeek's Pizza
419 Denny Way
Seattle, WA

For those interested in a bookstore crawl, 3PM at the U Book Store (does this mean University?) unless Jonah has some other clever idea. An address might be useful.

Oh, by the way, I don't suppose you want to run us up a little travelogue about Seattle the way you did for South Island, NZ, by any chance, BX? Because we're now going there and I have no idea what there is to do in Seattle apart from laugh at Charles' beard. . .

Posted by Balaam Xumucane (Member # 419) on :

I'd wager others would be far more capable of coming up with a list of must see attractions for Seattle than I. But I like the Space Needle, and the wack architecture of the Rock & Roll museum offhand. (Will you still be coming to San Francisco? Because that's my yard, and I'd be more than happy to show y'all around. Using Reverend's Map I could do a temporally-displaced Starfleet HQ Tour, but that might be too dorky. Yeah probably.)

I forgot to mention in my previous post that I meant Friday the 26th. Which is to say: Friday the 26th of December

P.S. BX, when are ou in WA? Jen and I are up now, if you want to do anything before the Gathering...

I'm in.

The sooner we can get a body count, the sooner I can make sure that there will be space at Zeeks for us.

I think this is the University Bookstore in question - address is at the bottom of the page: http://www.bookstore.washington.edu/ubs/main.taf

(I actually need to check to see if I have the 26th off... it might be a company holiday, in which case there shall be no Infopop tour, as no one will be here [Wink] )

How long will you be in the Bay Area, Lee? If you happen to have one day that you can spare, drive down to Monterey. Visit the Aquarium (which doesn't look too much like the Cetacean Institute in Trek IV any longer), go down to Fisherman's Wharf and get something to eat, and take the Seventeen Mile Drive. Beats the hell out of San Francisco. [Wink]

(The area is a favorite of mine and Jubes')

Okay, Jen and I will be at Zeek's around 6:00-ish. Balaam, what time do you want to go over?

--Jonah

Posted by Balaam Xumucane (Member # 419) on :

Hey, I am paying attention. Sorry, I'm still trying to work out the ride situation. My mother, bless her heart, and my aunts have all decided that they want to go to Silverdale tomorrow for after-Christmas sales. Which makes Bainbridge rather out of the way, and then there's the problem of how to get back. Which becomes very problematic as they are planning to leave SD around 7. Which plainly wouldn't work. So perhaps Saturday would work better. Hang on. I'll go ask my sister if it's allright if we leave late Saturday. And wasn't Simon in on this whole dealie at one point?

Posted by Balaam Xumucane (Member # 419) on :

Ok, it looks like Saturday would work out A LOT better for me if we could do dinner a little earlier, say 5ish. Jonah, ignore my PM. I can still meet at Eagle Harbor Books at, say, 2:00 on Saturday if that still works for you. Optionally meeting others at 3:00 at the University Bookstore and then Zeek's at 5ish? Sorry to be changing things around at the last minute, but my transport/familial situation is uncomfortably inelastic.

I realize it's a stretch, but do people know of good dog-parks around Seattle? My sister's got two big dogs and may not feel like hanging around a bunch of science fiction nerds all day. Plus I'd much prefer having exhausted animals (over cooped up ones) for the ~16 hour drive home.

Ah. Feel free to ignore my PM, BX. I popped in here after I had already responded to your message -- but Jen and I may be able to meet you in Silverdale tomorrow. Give me a call anyway, and we'll see. Saturday for Zeek's looks like a go, and we'll plan things accordingly. As for dogs, Greenlake is an awesome romp zone.

My sister and I have figured out how to get to Silverdale tomorrow in two loads so my mother and her compatriots can do their part for the economy at the tender hour of 6AM, while our boat leaves at the slightly more reasonable 9. Much to my dismay, this means we'll be leaving there earlier as well. The long and the short of it is I will have a much greater say in where we can be when on Saturday, and I hope I haven't caused anyone any gross inconvenience.

(Thanks for the tip on Greenlake, btw)

I'm afraid I'm not going to be able to get away at all this week. Or ever. And I will be buried under the floorboards. But, yeah. Plus I will be at work tomorrow. So I will be dependant on gratuitous picture-taking.

And then there were, like, 3. I'm sorry you won't be able to make it, Simon, but working is a less good excuse than dead grandparents, auto-accidents, and greusome road conditions. Invent something more imaginative.

I think that maybe skipping the Seattle booktrawl will wind up working better for me and my crew, Charles. As it is, the dogs are in for a profoundly long trip in the car.

Jonah, it was great to finally meet you and Jen. I look forward to spending a less manic and hopefully more leisurely time with you tomorrow. What time should we meet at Eagle Harbor Bookstore so as to get to Zeek's at 5 and still have some time to look around? We were planning to leave Sequim around 12:45; will that give us enough time?

You run out of minutes, and the phone stops working entirely? I thought that with Pay-As-You-Go mobiles (or whatever they call them in the US), running out of minutes just stopped you from making calls.

Jason, Destin is (according to Yahoo! Maps) across the bay from Pensacola. My friend told me that's it's really close to the Alabama/Florida border. For all intents and purposes, I'm just barely going to be in the state.

Cartman, as far as I know, the visit wasn't firmly set in stone. Also, outside of that thread, LOA and I haven't discussed a meet-up. If that does happen, and I know it'll be a blast, it still doesn't help that I'm all alone RIGHT NOW in this state.

I just want people to know that there is a good person here on the other side of the screen with hopes, dreams, and good qualities. I want people to see with their own eyes that I'm more than just a midget porn star.

It's #140 or #141 -- one of the ones I don't have.

And I have to point out here that eidetic memory is a quantitative phenomenon, all the way from true "photographic" memory, where a glance is sufficient to recall something in crystal clarity for all time, down to well below wht I have. All it is is some degree of malfunctioning "blocking mechanism" -- where the brain doesn't properly send out the RNA strands that block off unused or old data. For me, it depends on what "sticks", and I still don't know why one thing does while another does not. I remember the article from the Communicator, and I remember it was at the top of the second column, but I don't remember the issue number. Similarly, I can remember my sixth-grade locker combination, but not my twelfth.
