Are there any plans to give Flare an upgrade any time soon? I ask because I would like to request a feature be added that seem to have come to rely on when browsing other boards. I would like to see a button or something added to the forum topic listing that lets you jump immediately to the first unread post. I know we can do that now, but that's after you've already opened the topic, sometimes to the wrong page. (We can also jump to the last post, but how useful is that?) It would only eliminate one click in most cases, but it would make things go much smoother and quicker IMO (especially on my dial-up connection! [Roll Eyes] ).

The next major upgrade (to the next generation UBB product) will appear here in late March/early April... it should be stable enough by then, at least.

And it'll have the requested feature. [Smile]

I want a pony.

...and a racecar!

Posted by Siegfried (Member # 29) on :

I'd like a feature that flashes a welcome message every time I click to Flare. Something like, "Welcome back, Siegfried. You sexy bitch, you. Grrrr."

Or a pony. A pony is also good.

Who'll pay stable fees?

Please no 'avatars' or 'rating systems' though - they are annoying. I see them on a board and hit the 'back' button.

Posted by Balaam Xumucane (Member # 419) on :

I heard that about you.

Given the option, I'd prefer my racecar to hover. Yes, I would sacrifice my pony for this feature.

But mostly I'd like that custom flare favicon thing. You know, this one: - .

"Please no 'avatars' or 'rating systems' though - they are annoying."

We've actively not had those for years now.

Posted by PsyLiam (Member # 73) on :

I actually don't mind avatars, as long as they're limited to a certain size and not animated. I can live without them though, even though I have a really nice one that I use elsewhere.

I don't know if it's some security thing, but is there anyway to change the way that the "pages you've visited" thing works so that when you jump computers it still knows what you looked at? I'm guessing it would involve storing that info with your profile rather than via cookies, or something technical that technical people should know.

Charles is not going to store everything server-side just because you are a lazy bum and cannot be arsed to remember which pages you've already read because you are lazy.

Maybe a new strikethru tag. Maybe underline. Well, then again, we do HTML here, so it doesn't really matter now, does it?

Mabye we should base a new "ranking" system on planetary acretion: Tim would be Jupiter, while a newbie would be...er...dust.

I'm doing well actually: in the financial black for the first time in a while.

I'm still in Fort Lauderdale: I found a two bedroom apartment for what I was paying for a cramped one bedroom so I took it.

Still unpacking though....after three weeks.

Eh, as long as it isn't Eve 1.2 (no offense Charles but that 'upgrade' is a pain in the butt on sooooo many levels over at SCN) then an upgrade would be cool.

Of course, even SCN, which is many upgrades ahead of Flare, doesn't have a "view first post" function.

Posted by Topher (Member # 71) on :

SCN is not many upgrades ahead of Flare. It is a totally different software package.

Shows what I know...which is kinda sad seeing as how I'm a mod there...

Posted by Jason Abbadon (Member # 882) on :

I have not been back to SCN more than once or twice since the "upgrade".

It's an annoying format.

Posted by Manticore (Member # 1227) on :

Think it's annoying for posters? Stuff on the control panel that used to take one or two steps takes a lot more now, and I miss having all of the control functions for a thread being under the "admin" button (well, except stickifying for some reason). Now I have to load a popup--which is annoying if the board is (as usual) running slowly.

It occurs to me though that I should probably post these concerns at the feedback board. Now, if only I could remember where it was...

Posted by Jason Abbadon (Member # 882) on :

I only went there for JOAT anyway, really.

...though a whole lotta horrid designs were getting proposed when I left.
I did not want to always sound discouraging, so I decided to say nothing at all.

Can we get our control over the colors in our username and status line back?

Posted by Siegfried (Member # 29) on :

I don't think we've had the ability to color our usernames, Mim. But I think you can still do it with the status lines if you use the <font color=""></font> construct. Just don't overdue, you have a 100-or-so character limit for status lines (including the HTML). I think Hobbes is the only one around right now who's using color.

Posted by B.J. (Member # 858) on :

We still have to have a mod change our status line for us, right?

Posted by Siegfried (Member # 29) on :

No, you can change your own status line. You just got to go into your profile, and there's a text box for the status line. However, I think there is a minimum number of posts you have to have before you can change it. I can't remember what that number is at the moment.

Posted by missmanners (Member # 1523) on :

Well.... yeah, all of them did. [Big Grin] Golly I'm just not very good at being sneeky am it? (snicker) What I'm eventually angling for is a contract for the exclusive rights to troll this board. I couldn't help but notice in the registration agreement (which I went over with a fine toothed comb by the way) that it sort of hints all known trolls will be treated like potential roadkill by a flock of buzzards. Soooo..... I'm thinking we can strike a deal, where I get exclusive rights to troll here and you can change the registration agreement to say you already have your troll and to allow in any others would be in violation of her contract!

So I'll just hang around and have fun and make you wonder whats up my sleeve until I get my 750 posts or find someone willing to take a bribe.

I'm housebroken, I dont cuss or flame or try to hurt any ones feelings.

No I dont, I agree, it's obnoxious. I've just never got into the habit of gratuitous vulgaraties. I dont object to anyone else using them, but I dont feel comfortable using them and replacing one letter with a symbol or punctuation mark doesn't change the meaning or the intent to use profanity.... whats the point except maybe to bypass a filter of some sort.

I think we have a few more than that. LOA is probably the only one who posts on a semi-regular basis. Tora Ziyal shows up every now and then to say hi. MaGiC pops in sometimes to let us know she loves us. If the profiles here had a gender field, I could ascertain whether MarianLH belongs in the list or not. We have more women in the "had them but lost them" category: MsChris, Jubilee, Species 1162, JediWeyoun, Starfire, an'on, and Dani.

Posted by Grand Master General Futurama Guy (Member # 968) on :

Hmm, I was close....LOA and Tora Ziyal were the only two that came to mind.

So wait, are you saying, wait, let me rephase this into a question...from what you are saying, can us lowly non-admins, non-mods use one of these 16,777,216 colors in our custom status and name bars?

You are quite correct; at any moment any of the persons I mentioned could start posting again at any moment. After all, I've taken a couple long breaks in the time I've been here (most recent being the first half of 2004). However, I think it's really unlikely. JediWeyoun hasn't posted since '99; MsChris has been gone since '01. Jubilee's, Starfire's, and Dani's most recent posts are from 2003. Species 1162 last posted in late 2004 (around the same time Styrofoaman last posted), and that's also when an'on last posted.

However, red and black are right out.

Chances are the default will be a version of something like this (though using the new, non-Flave font), with other choices being this one and a version of the 1999 design that the moderators have been tortured with for a while. Mabye I'll turn it on in here and scare people.

Posted by B.J. (Member # 858) on :

Blue says space & sci-fi to me. Red and black says goth and fantasy. So no, I wouldn't like to see it. Besides, you ever try to read a lot on a web page with a black background? When I do, I start seeing horizontal lines that really mess with my focus, and I have to go look at something else for a while (my only complaint about EAS, an otherwise excellent site).

B.J.

(I have other issues with red & black, but you wouldn't understand unless you went to Georgia Tech like me.)

Posted by Siegfried (Member # 29) on :

We don't need red to get a "little heat". We have threads on the length of the Defiant, decks in the Sovereign-class starship, size of Deep Space Nine, the quality of Star Trek: Voyager, the canonicity of The Animated Series and works of Franz Joseph, the continuity of Star Trek: Enterprise, the rank of Lieutenant Junior Grade in Star Trek: The Motion Picture, the design of the NX-class, the number of weapons arrays on the Akira-class starship, and the best idea for series six and movie eleven to generate more than enough heat for this place. And that's in addition to the politics-baiting, grammatical nitpicking, spam flare-ups, and general 'tween season pissiness that usually occurs.

Phht.
You want heat: go read the (novel length) threads on Creationism, the war in Iraq, or the disection of the Matrix movies.

Got the first part right, but NC State is red and white (at least that's what I've seen, not sure about officially). Red and black would be U(sic)GA, our in-state arch rivals.

One minor thing in an upgrade - can you make the interests line in the user profile longer?

Could you make it so that when you reply to a message, the last page of the current thread comes up beneath it (or better yet, the last post) rather than the first page, as that's a bit useless. (And yes, I know you could click to bring up the last page, but it's a minor inconvenience, damnit.)

So... what happened? [Razz]

Well, the things called the Vogons came spouting off about some "express bypass" or something or another. They had a decided British accent, so I think it was just Liam wearing his frilly britches and taunting us Yanks again.

There are rumors floating around elsewhere that Charles is being held captive by T'Bonz. Has anyone seen him around?

Charles' character has been written out after he decided to pursue a career in movies. The plot is now that we're all looking for Charles. Auditions are being held for a new leading man, the front runners are said to be Stephen Rea, Chris Noth, and Robert Patrick.

Well, his parody character is up for grabs at TrekPMS. Maybe I'll have to go shake some bushes and see what happens.

I vote for Robert Patrick- he can convince his brother to have Filter make a Flare theme-song.

Well, if at first you don't succeed...
