Upon reading the letters in the "Fray" section. I cam across one I think in answer that I think said it best. It follows:

I was stationed in South Carolina for four years. The mayor of Sumpter (the nearest town) was proudly known as "Mayor Bubba".

It did not impress me as a hotbed of rational thinking.

I can't stand people with such small minds. I was reading in a magazine that this priest says pokemon are evil and that playing the pokemon card game leds to playing Magic The Gathering and that leds to Satanisim and the Devil. Lets get real people, I am sick to death of people saying that games and TV cause Devil worship and goat sacrifices. Next they'll come after Star Trek because the idea of no gender sterotyping causes hate groups and civil unrest. These people need to get a real hobby and leave the rest of us alone.

I will now get off of my soap box.

Btw did you know "Little Red Riding Hood" is a banned book.

Btw since Elim asked "Another frequently challenged book is Fahrenheit 451 by Ray Bradbury. This book was handed out at an Irvine, California middle school in 1992 with curse words such as 'damn' and 'hell' blocked out. Students wrote to Bradbury describing the situation and pointing out the irony that a book about the evils of censorship had to be censored before they could read it."

Ya know?

I'm so flabbergasted over this issue that I don't know precisely what to say.

I read "Fahrenheit 451" and many other titles that the High School librarian fortunately never read. There was sex, violence and other truly interesting things told of in those books that I never would have heard about if they had been paying close attention. I may actually have learned something (but, of course, that has yet to be proven).

Let's be grateful that people with small minds rarely frequent the library. When they do, they don't want to read anything, they just want to be certain that nobody else is.

God... I live in South Carolina. This state is so religious about everything it makes you go crazy thinking if it'll catch up with the rest of the world. Recently there was this whole deal about whether or not video gambling machines should be legal since there's no law for it, or against it. It was funny how every single church would post signs saying "Vote No" and its evil. Hell inter-racial marriages just became legal iirc. This all, including book banning, goes to show how far back SC is behind the rest of the world. A confederate flag over the state capital?! You'd think the term slow southern redneck would be a sterotype, but in a state nicknamed "The Bible Belt" it's not.
