Upon reading the letters in the "Fray" section. I cam across one I think in answer that I think said it best. It follows:
Subject: Book Banning From: Concerned MOM
"Next thing you know we'll be banning:
The Wizard of Oz Alice in Wonderland The Hobbit Cinderella Snow White Casper (the Friendly Ghost) Wendy (the Witch) Superman All Goosebumps stories All mythology: Greek, Roman, Norse, etc. All Science Fiction All "Scary Stories" All Fairy Tales Mother Goose
Only people with limited literary exposure, no imagination, no common sense, no life and little self esteem have a problem with books like these. Read a book. Imagine the impossible. Get out of your own sheltered little little world! There's a whole UNIVERSE out there, and believe me -- it's not all milque-toast. Stimulating children's imaginations is extremely important to the future of society. If they can't imagine it, they can't create it. And all progress stops. Get real!"

I was stationed in South Carolina for four years. The mayor of Sumpter (the nearest town) was proudly known as "Mayor Bubba".
It did not impress me as a hotbed of rational thinking.

I can't stand people with such small minds. I was reading in a magazine that this priest says pokemon are evil and that playing the pokemon card game leds to playing Magic The Gathering and that leds to Satanisim and the Devil. Lets get real people, I am sick to death of people saying that games and TV cause Devil worship and goat sacrifices. Next they'll come after Star Trek because the idea of no gender sterotyping causes hate groups and civil unrest. These people need to get a real hobby and leave the rest of us alone.
I will now get off of my soap box.

Fahrenheit 451 a banned book? Now there's a paradox.
------------------ Elim Garak: "Oh, it's just Garak. Plain, simple Garak. Now, good day to you, Doctor. I'm so glad to have made such an... interesting new friend today." (DS9: "Past Prologue")
------------------ Frank's Home Page Noah Adams: "Well, some of them are really quite understandable. 'Montana is a leg.' is..." John Linnell: "...it's grammatical. It's not true, and it doesn't strictly make sense, and..."
Btw did you know "Little Red Riding Hood" is a banned book.
Btw since Elim asked "Another frequently challenged book is Fahrenheit 451 by Ray Bradbury. This book was handed out at an Irvine, California middle school in 1992 with curse words such as 'damn' and 'hell' blocked out. Students wrote to Bradbury describing the situation and pointing out the irony that a book about the evils of censorship had to be censored before they could read it."
I just read this three and I thought they were funny...
Objectionable
American Heritage Dictionary. Dell; Houghton. Challenged, but retained in the Churchill County, Nev. school libraries (1993). The controversy began after another dictionary was removed due to "objectionable language." It was removed from, and later returned to, classrooms in Washoe County.
Obscene
Merriam-Webster's Collegiate Dictionary. Merriam-Webster. Challenged, but the 1,100 copies of the dictionary were returned to the Sparks, Nev. elementary school classrooms (1993). A sixth-grade teacher objected to the book because it includes obscene words.
Obscene
The Bible. Challenged as "obscene and pornographic," but retained at the Noel Wien Library in Fairbanks, Alaska (1993). Challenged, but retained in the West Shore schools in Harrisburg, Pa. (1993) despite objections that it "contains language and stories that are inappropriate for children of any age," including tales of incest and murder. "There are more than three hundred examples of 'obscenities' in the book."

I'm so flabbergasted over this issue that I don't know precisely what to say.
I read "Fahrenheit 451" and many other titles that the High School librarian fortunately never read. There was sex, violence and other truly interesting things told of in those books that I never would have heard about if they had been paying close attention. I may actually have learned something (but, of course, that has yet to be proven).
Let's be grateful that people with small minds rarely frequent the library. When they do, they don't want to read anything, they just want to be certain that nobody else is.

God... I live in South Carolina. This state is so religious about everything it makes you go crazy thinking if it'll catch up with the rest of the world. Recently there was this whole deal about whether or not video gambling machines should be legal since there's no law for it, or against it. It was funny how every single church would post signs saying "Vote No" and its evil. Hell inter-racial marriages just became legal iirc. This all, including book banning, goes to show how far back SC is behind the rest of the world. A confederate flag over the state capital?! You'd think the term slow southern redneck would be a sterotype, but in a state nicknamed "The Bible Belt" it's not.
