Should the rest of the world recognize Somaliland as an independent country from Somalia?
http://www.msnbc.com/msn/566996.asp

I think so.

I don't get the bit about Djibouti. Do they seriously think that the other countries of the world will say "Well, now that Somaliland exists, we like them better than you, Djibouti, so we're just going to get rid of you..."?

I don't see any reason for the rest of the world not to recognize Somaliland. Or Sealand, either.

hehe. I wish those people would spruce up Sealand. A paint job would do it. LOL. I say good for them! They have the same balls as those who founded this nation. They had the balls to say 'We don't like your nation so screw you, we'll make our own!' I fantasized about founding my own nation. The Antartic Union. lol. We managed to build eviromental domes and a defence force within 50 years thanks to the help of an alien intellegence.

I wonder. Where can I get a Sealand dollar??

Yes, I would like to see Somaliland recognized. Africa needs all the stability it can get, or rather, chances to create stability for themselves.

Be nice if every country could be recongized.

Of course, last I checked, Taiwan still wasn't being recognized.

And this is why international politics sucks my left testicle.

I'd contribute a third testicle, but, um, that wouldn't be right now, would it?

The UN has recognised Tibet as independent ever since the Chinese invaded, but, um, that hasn't done much, now, has it?

Really? I didn't know Tibet was recognized as independent...

And I think Taiwan is recognized by everyone but China, right?

AFAIK, most nations don't formally recognise Taiwan as independent. Taiwan itself doesn't... it claims of being the legitimate government for all of China, and not one of two nations. The UN has accepted Communist China since the Seventies as the legitimate government of the mainland, IIRC.

Yes, both Taiwan and mainland China claim to be the China:
Mainland China = 'The People's Republic of China'
Taiwan = 'The Republic of China'

"They had the balls to say 'We don't like your nation so screw you, we'll make our own!'"

Actually, it was more along the lines of a few blokes sitting in a pub, and someone mentioning:

"Hey, there's an abondoned military platform just outside British waters. Who's round is it?"

"Not mine. So?"

"I'll get the next round, but only if we go and take it over and claim to be a new country."

"Brilliant. Get me a Calsbreg Export."

Which may be superficially similar to a bunch of religious wierdo's running off, but only superficially.

I started my own nation when I was in HS. I called it the Terran Federated Imperium. I took a page from Frank Zappa & included the "Involuntary Induction Clause," which stated that I could "lay hands" on a map & instantly proclaim that all persons, lands, & resources in the represented affected areas were now belong to the Imperium. I took it once step further as well: any place that any Imperial citizen had ever been or currently was belong to the Imperium. Furthermore, anywhere they MIGHT go in their travels would ALSO belong to the Imperium.

Annexation transitus. Gotta love it.

Heh...maybe I'll revive it. Some of you lot would make marvelous regional sub-emperors.

So if we pool our money and build our own landmass, can we call it New Sealand?

About that, I know where York is, and I know where Brunswick is, but where exactly is the original Zealand?

If we pool all our money to buil an artificial island, where would we put it? I say we call our nation New Terra. Or Sci-fi-ville.

We have to put it in the Pacific, MIB, & call it Gravette Island

And Zealand is the largest island in Denmark, the one Copenhagen is one. It, too, is sometimes referred to as "Sealand;" the Danes call it "Sjlland."

In this case I do beleive that it should be recognized, but in no way does that apply to any land. Each case must be examined carefully, because some are in no way deserving of recognition, an example that comes to mind would be Kosovo, in the Balkans, which only seeks independence in order to join Albania. But if a land has it's own unique people that do not have a land of their own, then they do deserve a country.

Does any country officially recognize Sealand, in any case?

Probably not. But I don't think any country officially denies it recognition, either. I don't know that any country has any official stance on the matter at all. Other than Sealand itself, of course. :-)
