I am going to be gone for a few days, but I want to start a dicussion and see where it goes. It's about the new anti-piracy plan Microsoft is going with. I read bad things about it and I am personally against it. I don't want to have to ask Microsoft permission to use something I bought. And I also build my computers on my own, so next time I upgrade my system and have to redo the whole thing, I don't want to deal with some 'Service Rep' to get permission to use my software AGAIN. If you ask me Microsoft is asking for trouble.

So, dicuss, debate, babble, and digress. I will be back Saturday.

I've tested XP at work, and its fairly simple. You dont have to ask.. its just letting know MS that you are a liscenced product owner. I really think its harmless, actually. Furthermore, if you dont want to deal with it (as I imagine a lot of people wont), dont buy it. its that simple.

That brings up another point. Why to people complain about products as if they absolutely had to buy them?

I guess it depends on the reasons behind "if they absolutely had to buy them."

For one, if someone is holding a gun to your head and forcing you to buy it, why wouldn't you bitch?

Besides, it's a lot of fun to bitch and whine. We Americans have a lot of practice.

Remember, folks, Microsoft sucks a whole lot. Don't buy their products.

I'm content with Windows 2000 Pro for now. Might look into getting a hold of Office XP. Looks to be really good. I never heard anything about this whole licensing thing, but then again I've been out of touch with my friend who usually tells me about this kind of stuff...

I have Win2000 Pro and OfficeXP. I will not be getting WinXP until i get a feel for the final release, and even then, i'll keep a dual boot with Win2000 Pro.

Buy? lol. I dont buy software.

DISCLAIMER: This post in not meant in any way to suggest that Wesley Button (aka Wes1701E) pirates software.

Not that I'm criticising or anything, but, er, what are you implying then?

Posted by Daryus Aden (Member # 12) on :

I think he 'aquires' it.

Ahh. Well, I can sleep easier now knowing that Wesley Button (AKA Wes1701) 'aquires' his software, but doesn't pirate it. Thank you Daryus Aden (AKA Daryus Aden).

Perhaps he only considers it "pirating" if he's the one making a copy. Obtaining a pirated copy isn't "being a pirate" to him.

Which is, of course, ludicrous, but oh well.

Thank you Tim Santa Nix (AKA TSN)

Actually, I have copied versions of Microsoft Office 2000, which make me slightly hypocritical, since I don't condone copying games. My only (really bad) defence is that I can, in no way, afford Office 2000, but it is really useful to my course at university. Games are unneccesary, a luxury, and so I buy them. And, if I had the money, I'd buy Office 2000. But having only just got back into 3 figure dept, I can't.

Anyone else do that? I know Omega will say that breaking the law, even in small degrees, is illegal, but what makes some stuff acceptable to some, but not other stuff? Why do I take mp3s off other peoples CD's, but not like doing copies of the entire thing?

Or we could carry on this very entertaining discussion of how Windoze (HA! Do you see the pun?!) sux.

"I know Omega will say that breaking the law, even in small degrees, is illegal"

Well, uh...

PsyLiam made a "Dubyaism!"

*rereads what he had written*

My god, I must have been tired. I'm all over the place there.

I kinda meant that Omega would say that all illegal activity is bad and evil and people should burn for it. Jaywalking copying mp3s, lending video tapes to friends, and so on. And I was asking what makes us able to do some illegal stuff without caring, but not others. But it came out all blurby.

Let's talk about monkeys.

Sex with monkeys?

Spider monkeys have lots of sex. But not with chickens. Just with other moneys. In case you were confused.

Posted by Daryus Aden (Member # 12) on :

Ok, just let me get this straight.

Spider monkeys have sex with money. Great. Now all I have to do is cross breed a dromedry with a five assed chimp and we'll all be swimmingly good.

"This monkey has only one ass!! It's of absolutely no use to me!!"

Wow, you guys sure went off topic. But I'm not going to get either XP product unless I can get it for dirt cheap or free. But still, wow. Do It took less than a whole page to get WAY off topic. I'm more impressed than ever.

Posted by MeGotBeer (Member # 411) on :

We did not go off topic. It's fucking obvious that when you create a thread about microsoft, that you really want to talk about monkeys and their butts.

Posted by Daryus Aden (Member # 12) on :

Exactly.

As a employee of a certain large microprocessor company, i have a MSDN subscription, so I get any MS product for free (the company buys it for me)
