You don't think it is weird that the dem. are using the rep. president in their campaign ads?

Posted by The BWC (Member # 818) on :

Dems are crackheads who try to fit in but are actually crackheads who operated hippie-mobiles and hippie-functions in the mid 80's.

Well, not being in power, I suppose they're hardly in a position to start a war to get themselves re-elected. Although some of Carter's antics in Cuba. . .

Yes, (American) Politic are wierd, they are kind of strange even....

But, if it works, great, if not, great....

Posted by Sol System (Member # 30) on :

No, I don't really find it strange at all. Politics is about a lot of stuff, but mostly popularity. Be with who is popular. Do that which is popular. (And, in a representative democracy, that's sort of the whole idea.) If I'm the Democratic Representative of East Havershum, and my constituents happen to really like President Bush, then of course I'm going to really like him too. And not to sound overly naive, but in order to escape being overly cynical, I'll point out that part of the job of being a representative is representing the people who elected you, and those people, the polls would seem to agree, are in favor of our current president.

Talking about weird American politics, that nice big country over the sea now has the self-appointed right to attack the Netherlands, if any American ever gets into that new international court. Yay. I'm watching out for SEALs in my backyard.

1. The "Dutch bill" was introduced way back in May of 2001. What, have they been snoozing for a year? Sounds to me like manufactured news .

2. The bill is languishing in committee, where it will likely remain until it dies, and good riddance to poorly-worded rubbish.

3. If Europe can make a stink about the death penalty to the point that they will not assist us by providing evidence necessary to the prosecution of a war criminal, why shouldn't we have our own principles we're prepared to stick to?

It's as if Europe says You can't prosecute our person your way -- but we can sure prosecute your person our way.

That's a special kind of arrogance, and you don't have to be Jesse Helms to get fed up with it.

They're not talking about procedure for prosecution, Rob, they're talking about a method of punishment that a lot of Americans agree is completely barbaric.

Well, is IS a "International Criminal Court" and not a "European Court" But the second part...does bring up an interesting point.
If Europe did support the death penalty, I wonder how much more violently, the US would react to its soldiers being on trial.

Wait a sec, are you saying that if Europe supported the death penalty, and gave the US evidence for prosecuting "war criminals" then it would be ok for them to prosecute US soldiers because their punishment standards would be the same as yours? I'm confused by your statement.

Wait a sec, whyis the US in the business of prosecuting war criminals anyways?
How do they find impartial judges and juries in the US....that haven't ever heard of wars that the US has fought in? It doesn't seem very workable.

Re: World Cup matches as war reenactments: Refresh my memory; which was the war where the U.S. was ground under by Poland? Poland!

Terrifying.

Also, Faklands War: No-one cares.
Maradona handball: We hate the fuckers.

So it's more as if wars are a reenactment of past football matches.

The US are playing Mexico tomorrow. Hmm...

In an uncanny reversal of the general state of affairs whereby many Yanks have their cleaning done by Mexicans, I fully expect Mexico to wipe the floor with the USA team. 8)

well, sir, you be t3h Wr0n6 [Big Grin]

Posted by Vogon Poet (Member # 393) on :

Yeah, I sure was wrong there! The Mexicans performed extremely poorly. It was probably fixed. Not that it matters since (in theory) whoever went through would be beaten by Germany, but the way things are going in this World Cup (champions France, plus highly-rated teams like Argentina and Portugal going out at Group stage; Spain beating Ireland and Brazil beating Belgium mostly through sheer luck rather than talent) even that's no longer certain. . . 8)

Posted by PsyLiam (Member # 73) on :

No. Considering the way things are going, I wouldn't be surprised if we beat Argentina and then lost to Japan...

Posted by Vogon Poet (Member # 393) on :

Brazil, Liam, Brazil. We beat Argentina already, you know, all that screaming outside your bedroom door about ten days back. 8)

Posted by Snay (Member # 411) on :

You know, I really like Arlington. It'd be cool if Maryland could annex Virginia and make it "Southern Maryland", but then West Virginia would have to change its name, 'cuz how could it be West Virginia if there was no Virginia to its east to be west of? It'd have to be Virginia. And then if Robert Lee came back as a ghost, he'd be mighty confused.

Posted by PsyLiam (Member # 73) on :

Argh! Brazil. Brain cramp.

I was stuck at my parents house for that. And the final ten minutes removed about 20% of what remains of my hairline.

Still, if we beat Brazil, then the rest of the competition on our side isn't too bad. The other top teams (Italy, Germany and Spain) are all in the other half, and either Italy or Germany have to be knocked out too.

Brazil also display a bit of a tendancy to assume that they are in a Nike advert, when they should be playing properly.

And England have been showing the frankly worrying habit of playing like a professional football team.

Brazil may have the edge, but it's by no means a clear cut result.

Okay, let me call Lee on this one.

Now, as some of you know, I'm no patriot. My philosophy towards the ole Stars and Stripes is that I smoke solely so I can have a lighter to burn the damn thing at any time (for those of you intellectually challenged, that's called hyperbole).

But let me stand up for the USA (football suddenly makes me patriotic). Why is it that when we get into the Round of 8 we're lucky? Last time I checked, the rules of football were simple. The team with the most goals wins.

Oooh, Portugal didn't come out until the second half. Yes, and we came out for both. Thus, we won.

Oooh, Portugal deserved to advanced. Why? We beat them, we drew with South Korea (who beat them). They only beat Poland. Last time I checked, three points is less than four. We deserved to advance.

Oooh, Mexico played poorly. And we didn't. Thus, we won. And we EARNED it.

Football may always be a minor league sports in the states, and will NEVER be as important to us as helmet football. But whether you like it or not, US football is here this World Cup. Portugal learned that the hard way, and so did Mexico. They're lucky, sure, but they're also damn good.

We probably don't have a chance in hell against Germany, but we've still gotten farther this year than England did in 98, so maybe we can at least get some respect.

Posted by The_Tom (Member # 38) on :

Indeed. And Saudi Arabia got further this year than England in 1994.

Posted by DT (Member # 80) on :

Since I'm not sure if I'm being mocked with that Saudi Arabia comment or not, let me add that my "We got farther than England in 98" thing is not part of my actual footbal analysis, just a chance to take a shot at my English colleagues and bring up memories of David Beckham's Red Card. Good times!

In all honestly, I'm actually rooting quite hard for England in the World Cup and scheduled my entire day around the England/Argentina game. I've got nothing against England and hope like hell they win the World Cup (since I know we've got no chance) but I just want to see the US club get some respect. If you're gonna be anti-American, there's more than enough pathways for that. Like the fact that we spawned Omega.

I think it was a Bowie concert in Texas or New Mexico or somewhere, where he wore a raccoon-skin cap on his head? Might have been in 1992 because I vaguely remember a reference to one of Columbus's ships, the Santa Anna.

Posted by PsyLiam (Member # 73) on :

If it does make you feel any better Danny, most of the people I know have stated that their respect for the US team has gone up considerably. Not that it was that high to begin with, but still...

Saying that someone didn't deserve to win a match is often sour grapes, but it is true that in football you can outplay someone and still lose. Look at the Ireland-Spain match.

I wouldn't mind seeing the US beat Germany, although if they lose, the chance of an England-Germany final becomes much greater, and that thought makes me giddy.

Posted by Vogon Poet (Member # 393) on :

Meanwhile, the Korean midfielder who scored the Golden Goal in extra time that enabled them to beat Italy, has been fired by his Italian club Perugia, for ruining Italy's World Cup.

Posted by EdipisReks (Member # 510) on :

well, as everyone knows by now, england was beaten by Ronaldo and Rivaldo and Ronaldinho and...what the fuck is up with all these similar names in Brazilian soccer? jebus, the Cincinnati Reds starting lineup doesn't start with Smith, Smythe and Smithers.

Shikky, that is the most totally awesome reference anyone could have made at this point. 8)

And Senegal are out, Turkey get through to the semis. Senegal did not play very well. So it's Germany v South Korea, and Brazil v Turkey (again - they played at Group stage, Brazil won 2-1).
