"Mr. Whipple, please don't squeeze the Charmin!!"

Wednesday night TVLand presented "Star Trek" with the "Pop Culture" Award at the first ever TVLand Award ceremony.

The "Pop Culture" Award was introduced and presented by Mira Sorvino, who is apparently a huge Trek fan (so there is still hope for you guys out there yet [Wink] ). The award itself was chosen by online votes at TVLand over an undisclosed period.

A montage of trek was presented featuring the classic series, as well as clips/photos from TAS, TNG, DS9 and VOY.

Star Trek was noted for position in pop culture iconology for breaking new ground with its multi-ethnic cast, tv's first interracial kiss, and the first time a tv star was forced to slap himself in the face repeatedly. It was also noted for introducing new words and phrases into the English language.

The award was accepted by William Shatner, Nichelle Nichols, Leonard Nimoy and James Doohan. William Shatner gave a touching acceptance speech, defined the meaning of Star Trek to our culture, thanked 'us', and noted honor to absent friends.

The saddest part of it all was watching James Doohan, dressed in traditional Scottish attire, shuffle up to the podium and slur out the words: "Thank you, very much". [Frown]

Probably one of the reasons Paul Sorvino did a guest spot on TNG.

Hey, I'm just glad he was able to go over to the ceremony, get up on stage, and say something. [Smile]

It certainly was a bit emotional seeing a cornerstone figure in the Star Trek legacy such as Mr. Doohan in such an ailing condition. [Frown]
He was really one of my favorite actors of Star Trek.

In fact, "Relics" was the first episode that I became actively interested in TNG because I was always a fan of TOS but never could get into TNG; mostly because we never watch tv on saturday nights when it was in first-run production.

TVLand awards? How many award shows are they up to now? Do people in Hollywood have anything to do besides giving awards to each other? [Wink]

Still... credits where credits are due.

I remember seeing both Shatner and Doohan do conventions while I was in school in Ohio. Doohan was a decent speaker. He doesn't seem to care much for Shatner though, from what I recall.

i recall meeting Doohan at two separate conventions, one in 94 and one in 96 and having him remember me from the previous one. he's truly a great guy.

Hmm. That sounds like a lifetime award for Trek - just like the ones that are rushed to be given to elderly people before they die.

Except for the fact that the entire program was dedicated to all of the old TV shows one would normally see on TVLand...or in other words all shows from roughly the 1950s - 1980s are fair game....

That explains why in my In Style Magazine that there's an animated poster of Kirk and McCoy next to her Oscar for Mighty Aprhodite.

I just saw the repeat of the awards tonight. Despite the well-documented accounts of animosity between Doohan and Shatner, they still clasped hands when they got on stage.

Shatner shook Doohan's hand once more as they departed the stage; however, this moment was disrupted by a chyron-ad for Chevy Trucks. Perhaps with Doohan's recent health problems, the actors are trying to reconcile.

What exactly was the deal between them, anyhow? I've never been clear on that.

Shatner was always a prick ... most famously, his refusal to act in the STII scene where Kirk congratulates Sulu on his captaincy. Anyway, stuff like this over the tv and film series led to a big rift between many of the actors and Shatner (who usually treated Kelley and Nimoy well, but was a bit of a prick to everyone else).

That's the story, anyway.

"was a bit of a prick to everyone else"

Minor Tangent that stands out: there's the convention incident involving The Boy (yeah, I know... he's much a part of the family as anyone else), whom Shatner bluntly "overlooked" when giving his speech to Steward/Brooks/Mulgrew&Co. Oh, and the audience.

What's that?

think he means wil wheaton

Posted by Dat (Member # 302) on :

IIRC, Wil doesn't care that much about it as he later says he finds Shatner to be very funny.

Wheaton has a thick skin for that kind of thing.
You'd have to to tolerate some of the treatment he's gotten from the "fans". [Roll Eyes]
I really give Will bigtime credit....and his role and acting was soooo much more inspired than Voyager's "Echeb" character. [Wink]

Wes got a lot better after he pulled his nose out of commander rikers ass, by about the 3rd season.

Posted by AndrewR (Member # 44) on :

No I know he meant Wesley - what are you referring to though? What was the snub?

Posted by Dat (Member # 302) on :

They were at a convention getting ready to sit down and sign autographs. Wil says "hi" to the rest of the Trek actors there who returns the favor... except Shatner who doesn't even look up but instead says "let's get on with this" or "let's get this over with" and tells Wil to sit down. Or something along those lines. I think the whole story might still be in archives on Wil's website.

Thats funny, I never got that impression from Shatner based on what I've seen of him on tv. Im an avid fan of Late Night w/ Conan O'Brien and Shatner is on there ofter and he always comes across and a jovial individual, not to mention the effort he is willing to put into STV long after the fact seems to go above and beyond the norm. Then again, hes on tv so its all an act...

Posted by AndrewR (Member # 44) on :

Shatner probably has spent too long on the net and just jumped on the "I hate Wesley" band-wagon. I mean some the people people out there that harp about him. Geez. Don't like Wesley - who cares. Alt.wesley.die.die.die hmmmm. [Roll Eyes]

Um, yeah. William Shatner is surely among the technoelite. Yes yes.

Actually, I think I recall reading on the frighteningly interesting wilwheaton.net that the two had since made up, or otherwise clarified and rectified the situation.

Posted by AndrewR (Member # 44) on :

I WAS joking. I don't get it though... what happened - He just didn't say hello? Maybe he didn't know who he was? Maybe Shatner was at the end of the line and was waiting for Wesley to sit down. Maybe he didn't hear him?

Shock!

A year ago, perhaps longer, perhaps not. William Shatner was on the Craig Kilborn late night entertainment talk show on one of the network broadcasting stations. CBS? Yes, I think it was.

Anyway, he's talking and talking and Priceline.com this, and "I fake write books" that, and Priceline.com this. Because, this is years ago, mind you, and Priceline.com was in it's infancy.

So, he's talking and talking and wasting all the hot air that could be used to make children balloons of puppies and giraffes, and then he proceeds to tell this story.

THIS ONE . HERE> CLICK ON TEH LINAK1.

Anyway. He's all "This happened to me, really."

And I'm all: "You're on the TV, and you are part of the superculture revolution of the late 1960's, and you are worshipped by the fattest, whitest men in the whole planet, and yet, you have no anecdotes about Spock or Nerds or Spock Nerds or just fun Hollywood rambunctiousness?

No, you don't, Mr. S, you have to tell an Urban Legend to entertain people. You are a fraud, and I doubt even your books are written by you.

PS: The site seems to claim that "In July 2000, William Shatner managed to move the legend to a new late-night talk show by telling host Conan O'Brien the incident had happened to his co-author," but I know this to be false. It was Craig Kilborn, and it was not his co-author, but him. Perhaps the rabbit was his co-author's rabbit, or even his co-author himself, and maybe he said it twice, once to both Kilborn and O'Brien, and if he did, it's like, he is the least creative person in the field of creativeness.

So who would win a fight then between Will Shatner and a dead rabbit. personally, i think the rabbit would kick butt. [Smile]
