In Broken Bow it seemed that the Starfleet admirals had 4 sleeve stripes on their uniform, but now I watched "Shadows of P'Jem" and got a closer look. In fact they are using the same sleeve stripe-system as TOS admirals did. It's amazing that they payed attention to this detail.

I like those Admiral uniforms! Has a little bit of everything: contemptorary, TOS and TNG.

I didn't notice the sleeve stripes...but I'll have to go back and look.

I can't say I particularly care for the Admirals Uniforms in Enterprise. DS9's episode "Past Tense" established that, in the 2020's neckties sort of disappeared and were placed with a cool psuedo-bow tie wrap around deal. It looked futuristic without being a vast departure. Now, I'm not saying it's a continuity issue or anything...fashion can be cyclical, but I would have preferred to see something along those lines if they were going to introduce ties into the uniforms.

I would have loved those ties as well, or perhaps something completely different again. But the military has always been conservative with the dress code... Perhaps the good Admiral wears a more futuristic neck ornament when off duty.

I should think that the more enlightened humanity of the 22nd century would have gotten rid of the dumb things...

Just so everyone knows what we are talking about:

They even managed to correctly match both Vice Admiral ranks... Forrest is the chief of Starfleet, right? Who was the other guy?

Posted by Aban Rune (Member # 226) on :

I don't think they've ever said specifically that he's the chief of Starfleet, though one could assume that's true since he's was in charge of selecting the captain of Enterprise, probably Starfleet's biggest mission since ships started leaving the Sol System.

Another thing I just don't dig about the uniforms is the collars. "Past Tense" also gave us collarless shirts and jackets. Every other Starfleet Uniform we've seen continues that trend of having no fold-over collars... This almost seems too present day for me...

Any theories why admirals have red-white as division color and not gold-white?

Posted by Aban Rune (Member # 226) on :

I think the stripes on the chest of the admiral's uniform are blue, gold, and red...representing all the division colors. It just looks like red and white in that photo.

IIRC, Starbase Commodores tended to have red shirts, no? Stocker and Stone wore red, but Mendez and Tracy wore gold. Perhaps there's a distinction between starblase commanders and those who command(ed) starships.

They wanted enterprise to be perfect, no errors, I guess they spent everyday going over the show and characters, etc.

And now that we've heard from the extremes...

I suspect many of the designers spent a fair amount of time going through old TOS eps, mainly to get ideas rather than out of some policy of getting in as many TOS-friendly details they possibly could. . .

The only thing I would change about that admiral uniform is the zipper. I think it should have buttons. They try to make it look formal, but the zipper doesn't work in my opinion.

Like this admiral uniform from JAG.

Also be nice if they did 'winter blues' and 'summer whites' for admiral uniforms.

If they're going to do that, why not just go the USN and ask to borrow some uniforms? They have to make it look different somehow...

That's so interesting, because Admiral stripes didn't appear in any TOS episode. There's just one outtake (AFAIK), were you can see them.

Well since they've already copied it about 90% what's the point. My point is the zipper just doesn't look right. So instead of different good, it's different bad. That's just my opinion anyway.

We've had ties for a long, long, time, and they've changed very little. Even though the things have never really had much of a purpose, it would IMHO be unrealistic for us to not have them in 150 years.

While Spike's discussing uniforms, BTW, I have an unrelated uniformish point for him: The other night "Relativity" re-ran, and I'm positive I saw a 29th century uniform with a red department colour in addition to the purple, green and orange. If anyone who's got it on tape wants to re-check, in the final scene where crazy-Braxton is under guard on the Relativity's bridge, there's a female guard who is definately wearing red... She's standing alongside two other gentlemen in orange, and its pretty clearly a different colour.

The only TOS episode I have that features a member of the admiralty is "Court Martial". Commodore Stone clearly has sleeve-stripes as depicted in the Encyclopedia-2 as commodore insignia. Perhaps we never saw what any higher-up admirals wore, but Forrest's stripes do make me think more of the TOS stripes than modern-day ones.

There were 3 admirals in TOS (Fitzpatrick, Komack, and Westervliet) but we never saw the sleeve stripes. But there's one outtake with Fitzpatrick and a tribble were you can see them and they are |[]| (in the USN it would be []|| ).
And Forrest's stripes are also |[]|.

BTW: Does anyone have a picture of Westervliet? He appeared in TOS For the World is Hollow and I Have Touched the Sky.

Well, I just captured a picture of him from my DVD, but the upload space that I-forget-who recently set up for Flare stuff is a bitch to upload to, so I can't get it online. Want me to e-mail it to you, or something?

iMHO i like the Enterprise admirals' uniforms, even wit the tie....

i reckon the zipper is just there because its more 'modern' than a button.

perhaps the ties is just part of 'tradition' which eventually got phased out.....

if its been said before then i'm just reinforcing the idea.
