I wondered when I saw "A Time to Stand" [DS9] (and I think I discussed it here, too) whether "Tyree's Planet" was the same planet we saw from TOS, I'm sure the WHOLE planet wasn't a desert. It sounds like it could nicely fit. Another nice thing from the DS9 crew. Oh to have new DS9.

Well yes as I mentioned, Sydney and Melbourne have already had obsure references... The Nebula Class Melbourne and the Sydney Class Jenolin.
It's the first time we've had Brisbane mentioned AND the actual place (my home town)! Actually there have only been a few cities named as actual PLACES in Trek - not counting things like the U.S.S. Melbourne or the U.S.S. Bozeman U.S.S. Sao Paulo etc.
We've had LaBarre (is that a town/city or just a region?), France. Cambridge, England. San Franscisco, USA. Brisbane, Australia. Was the Penal Colony in Wellington or Auckland, New Zealand? Lisbon, Portugal. Tokyo, Japan. Leningrad!! Russia (or the USSR if it's still Leningrad in Trek future - not St. Petersburg.) Los Angeles, USA. Marsaille SP? France - Where Chez Shandrine's is?
We've also had Montana, Tasmania and Alaska as states mentioned.
As for countries
Australia, New Zealand, Papua New Guinea, The Soloman Islands, England, Ireland, Russia, Portugal, France, Canada, USA, Brazil, Japan?, Mexico? (Where did O'Brien's assistant comefrom in "The Ship"?

locally, Star Trek has acknowledged my area with the U.S.S. Rhode Island and the New Providence colony... in SotSF, there are two ships, the U.S.S. Coventry and the U.S.S. Fall River that seem to be named for RI-localities, but are actually named for larger towns of the same names further north, i believe.
I was thrilled that there was finally a crewmember with the same last name as me in 'Relics'

Coventry, RI is a town where my friend Justin lives, and my friend Jen when she is staying wtih her father. i believe there is a vampires graveyard that kids go to party at there, but ive never made it there except having it pointed out to me when some kids were driving me to a party inside a construction site where some kids father got drunk and hit on my friend Mike..
there is also a Coventry, Massachusetts, i believe (but am not sure of), that i was referring to.. but you are right the Coventry would probably be named for the one in England..
locally, i got the biggest 'mention boost', however, when Chepachet was featured on the X-Files.. Chepachet is a tiny village of the town of Glocester, where i spent part of my childhood and shares a border with both Foster and Burrillville, where my parents and grandparents live (respectively) and where i went to high school. even though when Mulder was staying there on the X-Files, there seemed to be a lot of Vancouver-looking old growth trees around.. he said it was up route 5 but actually route 6 or 44 leads more that way, 5 leads to smithfield from johnston, unless you turn onto 44 or 116. they got the fact that it was in the middle of nowhere right though. Plus, the crazy psychologist Mulder went to was in Warwick, where i got to school at CCRI and the motel room Scully found him in was in Providence, where I work my two jobs and get into all my trouble. although there really arent that many motels, per se, unless you move outside the city into Johnston along the Connecticut routes

Someone behind the scenes of "Deep Space Nine" may have liked my area, as, if I recall correctly, both a planned visit by Sisko to his sister in Portland, and a U.S.S. "Portland," were mentioned. Of course, "they" could have been referring to my city's namesake.

Still seems very "anglo-centered", don't you think? They hardly give a damn about areas like Africa or Asia - and that is where the largest part of Earth's population lives - at least at the moment. Yet they are hardly represented at all. (Of course I know the real reasons - so don't try teaching me about ratings, marketing, and the like).
I know many Americans don't like to hear that - especially at the moment - (or haven't known yet) but there is more in the world than just the U.S.!!

This all reminds me of another Adelphi here in Texas.
Adelphi, Texas is the home to a ridiculous end of the world cult that I visited once. Slightly amusing story, that. Too long to type up now, though.
I can tell you off the top of my head that we did get looked at by an "Oracle" while we were there, who read our auras. Only good things were said.
And apparently, because I was wearing a red t-shirt I was marked as a Student Soul, eager to learn.
I love crazy people. It's too bad I missed the window on writing the article on them before the end of the world was supposed to happen. Sadly, it's already passed.

Actually, I don't know if they're still there or not. Doomsday was supposed to arrive via a planetary shift on 5-5-2000, and I went there in August 1999. If they all commited suicide I didn't hear about it, and I was watching for something like that back then.
They ran a piece about them on "Sightings" a few years ago. I went after reading a couple of books that referenced them: "5/5/2000: The Ultimate Disaster" and "The Ultimate Frontier"
The problem with those folks is that except for the fact that they believe that Richard Kieninger (the author of "Ultimate Frontier", and one of those Republic of Texas yokels that tried to sue the state into admitting that Texas entered the Union illegally; he's serving a sentence for fraud and passing off conterfeit bills now in Huntsville) is a true Prophet of God, they're highly intelligent, charismatic people. I honestly liked them.
(edit here: Kieninger recently died. Hmmm...methinks a story might still be possible)
So it's hard to understand how they could get all twisted around by such a poorly written book, giving up their lives to come live in a commune like that, and invest so heavily into a South Pacific apocalyse safehouse that they've never seen...
I have a special interest in people like that (cult members) due to the fact that my aunt--who I'm pretty close to--used to be one. She used to speak in tongues (apparently, I never saw her do it) and try and convert people. It was scary. She's all better now, and is a rabid atheist--the only other one in my family.
I dunno. It was interesting to go there anyway. The people outside of Adelphi had all kinds of rumours that they wanted to share with us about what specifically goes on up there at that "Damned Hippie Cult"...including speculation that there was a massive underground complex being built on the northside of the grounds.
It looked like a sewer system being installed to me, but I could be wrong.
Anyway.
