No one has commented yet?? Either it was so good that no one is complaining about it - or it sucked so bad the people aren't bothering!

However -- I digress.

I liked this episode. It was low-tech for the most part, but I thought is was a great story. Again, here you see Vulcans as being more prone to emotion; more evidence of their evolution over the years between 1957 and the 21st Century and beyond.

I found it very interesting, also, that the vulcan left behind was named: Mestral - and the inventor of Velcro was George De Mestral. Neat little tie-in there a la "Voyage Home"

Mestral was played by the same actor that portraited ONE in Voyager: J. Paul Boehmar -- he was great again. I would have like to see T'Pol's great great grandmother be a little different....

All in all i liked this episode..

Yes, I was expecting great things from Mr. Boehmer, and overall he delivered. Mestral wasn't overtly emotional at all -- he was logical, but simply not as rigid as Sarek or even Spock. It was nice to see aliens viewing Humans as complex beings for once, rather than the typical "you humans are such simplistic creatures" comments, like Phlox is so fond of doing.

OTOH, is there some rule that says that every major character's ancestor must be played by the same actor? I'm sorry, but in this case, I could see absolutely no difference between T'Mir and T'Pol.

Still, overall I definitely enjoyed the story. An interesting method for Vulcans to get some perspective on Earth, and for us to see it happen. And we were actually spared a technobabble solution! Rather than the old "bone knives and bear skins" routine, especially after last week's "time travel, McGyver style" crap, it's nice to see that the writers aren't TOTALLY hung up on their vices.

EDIT/ADDITION: I can't believe I didn't think of this earlier... just what the heck did Mestral plan to do when he hit his Pon Farr?

You know what !!!?? That is a great question! I think the B&B comepletely forgot about that fact!!!

Remember though, we don't know just how much of T'Pol's story was real, and how much was made-up...

Get a wife or visit a bordell.

Doesn't work. First, Vulcan sex involves mental as well as physical interaction. How would you suggest he explain his telepathic abilities to his partner? Second, would he plan on keeping his wool hat on while he's doing it? Third, I'm sure that even as enamored with the Humans as he is, interspecies sex would probably NOT be a good idea without full exobiological analysis -- even to Mestral.

And finally, if he suddenly developed health problems he'd be rushed to a hospital, where there'd undoubtedly be an "alien autopsy."

If he finds a partner who loves him, he could tell her the truth.

Or he doesn't explain it. Would you believe a woman in a talkshow, who says that an alien with pointed ears had sex with her?

Bad idea or not, he doesn't have many options.

and then we would have another regurgitated TNG script, and everyone knows that Berman and Bragga would never regurgitate a TNG script.

True, but look at Spock, he turned out ok.

Of course I know Spock turned out okay. But Spock was born decades after the Federation was founded, and 150 years after First Contact. There was plenty of time to make sure that they two races are biologically compatible, or at least they won't kill each other with alien microbes. Mestral simply had no way of knowing that -- and NONE of the Vulcans would have known that.

Y'know, instead of sex, he could always just go do the next best thing: kill someone.

Yes, perhaps in a later episode there'll be a reference to the infamous 20th-Century serial killer "The Bat-Eared Butcher of Brooklyn."

Hey... maybe OJ really didn't do it! [Wink]

What about that little nasal numbing issue that T'Pol had in the early portion of the series? Wouldn't that effect T'Mir as well?

Posted by O Captain Mike Captain (Member # 709) on :

it would, unless the writers finmally realized it was complete bullshit thats better off left behind, like it is.

Posted by Treknophyle (Member # 509) on :

Well, at least it fills up the 'history files' a bit.

And think of the fan-fic writers: They'll have a FIELD DAY with Mestral.

(I do hope the writer of that porn-Spock novella has retired).

All in all - I thought it a good episode.

im sorry.......i seem to be missing something here.......was this actually true? or was t'pol just "telling a story". and what was she holding at the end? my guess is a purse signifying that her ancestors really were there in the 50's. comments?

It was the purse that T'Mir had used suggesting that T'Pol's story was true (at least the basic premise). How much in the details she told is still in question because maybe she herself didn't have the whole story or she was drunk and made details up without knowing it or she was humoring Trip and Archer without needing to divulge as much as possible.

Rather than start a new thread, I'll just post this here...

CNN published an interesting article about scientists researching babies and giving them early grasping abilities by having them wear velcro mittens. The specifics aren't important, but the last paragraph was a brief descriptions of the origins of VELCRO.

According to the article, Mr. George de Mestral was from Switzerland and borrowed the idea from burrs that had collected on his clothing during a hike. He patented it in 1955.

So, not only did B&B get the time wrong (two years too early) but they were also on the wrong continent!

Fucking up internal continuity is one thing... but when they start rewriting real history, that's getting ridiculous.

Psst...Star Trek isn't real.

Besides, what is the guy going to tell you, the truth? "You don't look like you're from around here, boy. So where is you from?"

Star Trek fail reality? that's unpossible!

Star Trek isn't real? Geez, now my entire perception of reality has been destroyed... [Roll Eyes]

No shit, Trek isn't real!

However, since this is a TELEVISION SHOW that's written for the enjoyment of humans, it's based on a common frame of reference for everyone to understand. It's futuristic science fiction, not alternate history.

Unless the next episode is going to mention how Isaac Newton was not the guy to develop the theory gravity? Or someone will make a brief reference to Brutus, who was betrayed and murdered by his friend Caesar?

Posted by O Captain Mike Captain (Member # 709) on :

well at this point it is alternate history. no ferengi ever landed at roswell, time travelers didnt not interfere with social workers deaths in the 30s, orbital weapons platforms, eugenics wars, video of voyager over l.a., russian intruder on an aircraft carrier, blah blah blah yakkety schmakety.

maybe the episode took place a few years after we thought it did. maybe the universal translater rendered the word so our 2002 ears could understand it. maybe im an enterprise apologist. maybe your making a big deal about a line of dialogue that was inconsequential to the plot. maybe im drunk. maybe im going to go pee.

Posted by EdipisReks (Member # 510) on :

if you have to pee, by all means go. supposedly, if you have to pee real bad and you don't go for a long time, and you do this a lot, eventually your body starts ignoring the pee signal and you start to lose bladder control. bad.

i hope that this newfound funniness carries over to the Red Dwarf movie. the last couple series of the show were....not as good as the previous 5.
