Well, firstly, here's a really major error.

This and this are images from SoA and WYLB, respectively. The second scene is a modified version of the first. Notice the Romulan ships and the registry in the lower right.

Definitely a new ship, since the NCC-1837 and NCC-1864 are destroyed, and the NCC-1867 long decommissioned. No weird reactivation theories, please.

Well at least this Defiant had a NCC marking unlike the horrible NX during "What You Leave Behind." I guess the final episode was named for the fact the VFX guys kept on leaving things behind like the original registry of the Defiant into the new one...

I wouldn't be surprised if those lazy, good for nothing idiots labeled all the Galaxy Classes with NCC-1701-D, all the Excelsior Classes with NX/NCC-2000, and so forth.

The Defiant really didn't get a very good run from the VFX guys, did it? Not only did they screw with the length, but they stuffed up its rego as well. I'm personally rather annoyed (and I'm sure I'm not the only one).

Actually, the VFX people have done a very good job of keeping the Defiant's length at 120m.

Yes, except for station scenes, which no one likes. They're very good with ship lengths, generally speaking.

Well, yes, in the sense that all the ships do have lengths. Now, as for keeping each ship's length constant... Well, that's another story entirely...

They do keep the lengths consistent, except where Cardassian ships are concerned.

OTOH, Stipes and Sternbach have a bad habit of not being consistent the show itself.

It's amazing how the Defiant, BOP, and "bug" are (almost) always shown at the same relative size to each-other but the actual true size of each ship is practically impossible to determine.

I would love to shoot the person who first came up with the 170m Defiant idea. The main (ventral dome) shuttlebay was another stupid idea. Oh well...

General canon length: ~120 metres.

Even I've had enough of the 560 feet business. Best answer I was able to come up with: it was someone's quick plug-it-into-DS9 estimate which made it into David Stipes' charts (like the false Miranda and Akira sizes), and then into the DS9 tech manual because Rick knew very little about the ship for the size to seem wrong to him. The Master Situation Display was worked on by Doug Drexler, Herman Zimmerman, Mike Okuda and a few other folks has 110 meters, and if it were intended to be 560' long, then the spacing of Engineering Decks 1 and 2 would have to be 19 feet, which it obviously isn't.

Back to the registry, it probably isn't that difficult to change the reg from NX to NCC on the actual computer model (as some have said), but once they do that, the problem is that they cannot use the established stock footage any longer. I just remembered Rick or Mike Okuda saying that online.

It's obvious that whoever thought that he/she could use the Valiant copy of the model for the Defiant forgot to change the reg number. I even heard something about a completely different model being built, but don't recall the details.

I agree, I like the 110-120m length. BTW how do you create those smiley face things (I'm new to this)?

Boris: Rick should be ashamed of himself. Most of us could have done a better job documenting the Defiant. Ha, I even prefer the look of the Defiant over Voyager. Anyway, enough Sternbach bashing (until the Voyager Manual comes out).

The issue with Rick Sternbach is that his knowledge is very specialized. You can spend days asking about Excelsiors, Defiants, Akiras, Steamrunners and get a "dunno" response, but try asking about Voyager and you'll never want to know anything about that ship again

Shuttles are constantly constructed from stored and replicated parts (he imagines a type of storage room next to the main shuttlebay). I don't remember what (or whether) he ever said anything about the AeroShuttle, but since it's just a plain runabout with wings, it probably isn't as exciting as the new Type-8/9 shuttles and the Delta Flyer. Remember, they're constantly trying to make each show visually unique.

I find it hard to believe that they can construct so many shuttles from scratch, let alone the Delta Flyer. The Aeroshuttle is not guaranteed to look like a Runabout because we have never seen it. Yes, I know the bottom looks similar to a Runabout, but that's only the bottom.

It would have been more believable (and rewarding to viewers) to use the Aeroshuttle instead of creating the Flyer out of nothingness. After all, they are probably much the same thing.
