Saw version 3 of the Encyclopedia today. Would have picked it up too, if it weren't for the $60 price tag. Not much as far as starships go in the supplement section. We see the dedication plagues for the Valiant, the Prometheus and the Cousteau. There is an entry for the Nautilus (and I would assume the ShirKahr as well). The entry for the T'Kumbra doesn't give a registry. The only artwork for the entries on the Dauntless and the Prometheus are pictures of the MSDs. The picture from the DS9TM is used for the entry on the Centaur. The comparison chart is put in the supplement section but remains unchanged. The Dominion battlecruiser is still upside down. There is a side-view picture of the Dominion battleship, called simply the warship. Also color topviews of Son'a ships. All in all I like the supplement section but is it worth 60.00?

That was the name of the D's, wasn't it? *scratches head*

Where'd this name come from, anyway?

And why does a fancy runabout have a dedication plaque?

The first Captain's Yacht was unofficially called "Calypso," for the research ship commanded by Jacques Cousteau. Going by tradition, however, it should have been called the Captain's Gig.

Cousteau, of course, is obviously for that famed oceanographer.

How it rated its own dedication plaque? Beats the heck outta me.

Well, I could've guessed it was named after Jacques Cousteau, but I was wondering where the non-canon name came from. What's the authority on it...?

Guess I wasn't all that clear.

Well its dedication plaque only has the name and a quote, nothing else.

Almost like the SS Raven. BTW, what does the Encyclopedia say about the Raven???

It says the Raven is a Starfleet ship, and the NAR registry was sort of a mistake.

The Raven's registry was a mistake? My @ss!!! It was NAR in "Raven" and even when the ship was sketched out in "Dark Frontier" it said NAR in the storyboards. Anyone scan the MSD of the Prometheus or of the Dauntless yet? I'd like to have it.

The art department. See, there's the problem; artists are in charge of technical details. The world needs fewer artists.

Sounds to me like it was a general mistake. They didn't know they wanted it to be a Starfleet ship back then.

I always believed the ship wasn't supposed to be Starfleet until they decided otherwise for Dark Frontier. It would have made more sense, since I would expect a Starfleet crew on a Starfleet ship. In addition, there was no necessity to make it a USS.

Anyway, if we may blame the artists...

I found the EncycIII today, haven't acquired it yet, though. I never bought the EncycII so it wouldn't be a loss to me, except that there are other books I'd like to see first.

I'm dissapointed in you, I really am...Seriously. Nobody even mentioned the fact that it was Doug Drexler who designed the Chaffee. Which makes it all the more likely that the shuttle is a tad over seven meters long, as shown in the Defiant blueprints.

BTW, our Dick Tracy makeup artist who became a scenic artist is now working as a CGI artist for no other than Foundation Imaging. Mike Okuda mentioned that yesterday in the chat, and it was to be expected after he did some prelim-shapes of the Breen ship for CGI folks to build on. I seriously feel the need to contact this guy...

Anyone scan in the dedication plaques for the USS Prometheus, the Cousteau, the USS Defiant NCC-75xxx, or the USS Sao Paulo? I was wondering if someone did already.

Any body got scan pics of ships from ENCYC3

Posted by The359 (Member # 37) on :

There are only 2 dedication plaques in the new section. USS Prometheus and Cousteau are the only plaques, and the Cousteau plaque only says:

*enter modern Starfleet logo here*
COUSTEAU

U.S.S ENTERPRISE * NCC-1701-E
JEAN-LUC PICARD, CAPTAIN

"The future is in the hands of those who explore...and from all the beauty they discover while crossing perpetually receding frontiers, they develop for nature and for humankind an infinite love" - Capt. Jacques-Yves Cousteau

As for new ship pics, there are none. Just Nebulas, Mirandas, and Excelsiors.

Oh, I'm sorry, I forgot. There is the Dominion Dreadnaught (warship as they call it), color pics of the Son'a Science, Command (Scout), and Cruisers, yet no fighters. Also, a picture of a Defiant class ship labeled as USS Valiant, the new Romulan Shuttle, the Type-10 Shuttle, and a Caatati ship (which I don't remember).

I also forgot there is the plaque for the USS Valiant

The Caatati ships were in Voyager's "Day of Honour" (*ducks from Krenim wrath at the mention of that episode*). They used thorium isotopes to power their ships' systems, and Seven provided them with a converter so that they could get their crippled fleet up and running... Right?

Um... I can't get the new Encyclopedia yet... damn US release schedules.
However what I *DO* have is a load of official exterior schematics, including the Prometheus and the Dauntless. As soon as I get my new PC working I will scan them. (Damn Windows '98. I only had it 2 days and already it is so screwed up! Note to Bill Gates: "From Hell's heart, I stab at thee; for hate's sake, I spit my last breath at thee.")

I'm thinking of putting them on a website. I'll keep you all posted, but copies of those MSDs would be appreciated!

I am convinced this is a flub...the Command ship never entered the atmosphere? Though the "Scout" size fighters did have atmospheric capability...?

My thought is...not everyone at Paramount is on the same page...that is for sure.

My humble thoughts...
