Well, since the Delta Flyer is just about one of my favorite ships in Star Trek, I think that it is my duty to post all problems I can think of about it.
It would seem that the graphics artists for Voyager have decided to move the Delta Flyer's torpedo launcher.

This is where I thought the deflector was: http://members.xoom.com/avalonsector/junk/deltadeflectordiagram.jpg
This is where I thought the torpedo launcher was: http://members.xoom.com/avalonsector/junk/deltatorpdiagram.jpg

Apparently, the Flyer has two torpedo launchers, and no deflector, illustrated by this animation. http://members.xoom.com/avalonsector/junk/deltaflyertorpanim.gif

I guess its possible that the lower indention is the deflector, even though it doesn't glow. Or, the (what we thought was) the deflector doubles as a torpedo launcher.

What do you think?

Does the deflector have to be on the surface of the hull???

I'm almost certanly sure it does but i'm just checking.

That's the deflector alright!

And I never noticed that torpedo launcher. That must be the standard torpedo launcher (not for those photonic missiles).

Yes the deflector has to be on the surface of the hull and it has to be forward facing. The deflector emits a constant stream of some kind of energy to push stuff out of the way.

That thing you thought was the deflector is acording to every schematic I've ever seen. You'll notice a striking similarity to the ones seen on Voyager and her shuttles.

I was wondering since the delta flyer is a really powerful shuttle/runabout then would it have its photons launcher similar to the ones located on runabouts?

I would think that just about all smaller sized craft such as runabouts and shuttles would have the same microtorpedo launchers. Though a Runabout would be able to carry more than a Type-9 for example.

They could have it mounted, like a ski-box.
But I like the Delta Flyer's solution better.

So far, no shuttle has been explicitly shown launching torpedoes. The one flown by Picard and Worf in "Insurrection" did launch microtorp-looking things aft, but we never learned what those were. Perhaps they were just those fancy tachyon pulses that destabilized Data's shields? John Eaves has a "torp tube" in his drawings for the shuttle, but those need not be considered "official".

Runabouts have carried torpedoes in some episodes, but the only time we saw one of them really firing a torp was in "The Search pt II". The torps emerged from under the ship (as seen from the inside - we never got exterior view). The runabout doing the firing did NOT carry the dorsal pod some runabouts sometimes have. Nor did more than one of the runabouts in "Jem'Hadar", even though both of the craft accompanying the Odyssey were supposed to have torpedoes. So it seems the dorsal pod has nothing to do with torpedoes (except perhaps serving as a targeting sensor and datalink for a pack of torp-armed runabouts?).

Timo, I believe there are actually various pods that can be attatched to the Danubes (photorps, phasers, sensors, etc...).

Supposedly there is also a torp launcher and a tractor emitter underneath the cockpit of a Danube. Where does the DS9 Tech Man show the photorp launcher to be on a Runabout?

If memory serves there was an episode in which a runabout got shrunk, and during an altercation a discharge from the runabout is seen killing a Jemhadar soldier. I always wonder if this could have been a micro torpedo.

It was. Someone in the cockpit said something about "Torpedo Lock". It may have been small, but it was still a matter/ antimatter explotion!! Those'll leave a mark!

Alas, the DS9 TM doesn't really show the location of the torp launcher. It does tell that there are "pop-up" microtorp launchers somewhere near the forward cabin (perhaps in the stub wings, perhaps under the cabin), and that some of the amidships "mission modules" can be torpedo launchers (presumably capable of drop-launching full-size starship torpedoes).

The volley of torps we saw emerging in "The Search" could have come from either a microtorp launcher below the cockpit, or a full-size torp launcher in the amidships modules. Where did the possible torp in "One Little Ship" come from, exactly?

Posted by Aban Rune (Member # 226) on :

I know it came from the front of the ship and i think it came from underneath the cockpit. Being that small, it's probably pretty hard to see on tape.

The loader for the microtorpedo launcher is in the floor of the cockpit, so I am guessing the launcher is on the bottom of the ship.

Getting back to the Flyer, what if the positions of the torp launcher and the deflector were in the opposite places that Black Knight originally thought. The deflector on the bottom and the launcher on top.

The extendable micro-torpedo launcher(only one)is indeed on the underside of Danubes, towards the back of the cockpit housed in that sensor-cluster indent. If you look in the DS9 TM on page 149, it says so in the "Tactical Systems" paragraph. It also says you can gain access to the torpedo systems through one of those hatches in the cockpit floor.
In "One Little Ship", the unfortunate Jem'Hadar did get knocked down by a blast coming from the bottom of the mini-Runabout. Ouch!

That's what I'm guessing. The deflector might be on the bottom, and the torp launcher on top.

The deflector dish on the Delta flyer is on top, and the photonic missile launcher is on the bottom. I can prove this as soon as I figure out how to paste links properly.

As you can see from the pic, the deflector dish (and it is one because it looks just like Voyager's) is on the top of the craft, just like every shuttle onboard Voyager. The torpedo launchers are on the bottom and the sides. The side-mounted ones were seen in "Extreme Risk".

Did you read the top posts?

This thread is here because of this:
http://members.xoom.com/avalonsector/junk/deltaflyertorpanim.gif

It shows a torpedo coming out of the previously accepted Deflector. So that's what we're discussing.

And the photonic missile launcher is NOT in the same spot as the photon torpedo launcher. The photonic missiles come from somewhere near the forward phasers that we have not been able to exactly pinpoint. I'll get an animation up when I can.

What the hell???? Okay, okay (*sighs*). I know the photonic missiles come from the sides, near the forward phaser strips. I know photon torpedoes are fired from the tube on the bottom, but what in the Delta Quadrant is the deflector doing in that animation. It clearly looks like it's firing a torpedo-but it's a deflector! Wait a tick...maybe the deflector is firing some sort of burst of energy. We have seen the deflector on the E-D fire a burst at the Borg, maybe the Delta Flyer was doing the same? What episode is that animation from?

The E-D was not firing bursts from their deflector. It was an energy stream, like a phaser. They may have called it a burst though. Is that schem of the Flyer even official? The Flyer was most likely firing a torp. What episode did that come from anyway?

Of course, even if it is shown firing a torpedo from the deflector, that doesn't make the deflector a torpedo launcher, anymore than the E-D's deflector was a phaser array.

That animation was one I made using screen caps of a preview for a new Voyager Episode called 'Collective', coming out in a few weeks.
The rest of the video shows that 'energy burst' or torpedo, or whatever hitting a structure on the surface of a Borg Cube. It really does look like a torpedo to me even though I can't figure out why it is coming from the deflector, that is sort of what this thread is for.
Maybe we should cast votes on what we think is happening:
-That is actually the torpedo launcher (even though it looks like a deflector)
-The deflector is on the bottom and the launcher is on top.
-The deflector is a combination deflector AND torpedo launcher.
-or your own theory.

Seeing as I haven't seen the episode yet, I'm still saying it's the deflector dish. That's my story and I'm sticking to it *grins*. My theory is that, in the episode, someone has configured the deflector into a weapon. We have seen it before, after all.......

Well, I keep saying that it's not because we see it that's it's true. The E-D once fired a number of phaser beams from its tractor beam emitters in that Darmok episode. The tractor beam for crying out loud! And we have Voyager venting anti-matter through its nacelles. And a four decks-high holodeck in the same said ship. And a couple of mini-borg being blown into space from the cargo bay of that same darn ship. And two phased crewman who can pass through solid objects (except the floor) who can still breath non-phased air (that last one is excusable since realism would have killed the ep. anyway).

You have to draw a line between what can and can't be accepted. If all we see is canon (I absolutely HATE that word) then Scorpion II proved that Voyager is either twice as big as believed of Seven's Borg friends somehow shrunk when exposed to space.

There. I said it. What a relief!

Actually in Darmok, the phasers were coming out of the torpedo launchers, but it's still pretty crappy anyway.
