Pity they didn't show the Carolina. We don't know much about it, otherwise. Captain's name is Peterson (?) and it wasn't equipped to close a geodesic fold, our new Treknology-of-the-week.

Forgive me, I don't watch "Voyager" ...

What is the "Carolina"? Obviously a starship ... Starfleet? Whats it doing with Voyager?

Well, at least there is another Carolina. Hopefully it doesn't cause as much of a hassle as the original...

Could someone refresh my memory about the original?

BTW, at least they showed a Ferengi Marauder instead of the usual little pod ship.

The original USS Carolina was from TOS's "Friday's Child", and is said to be a Daedalus class in the Encyclopedia, but can't be because Daedalus class was retired in 2196, so we don't know what class Carolina is now.

Then the Encyclopedia II came out, and the entires had always said her registry number was NCC-160, but then a picture in the Encyclopedia said it's registry was NCC-235! Painted on a Daedalus class ship, BTW. So, the Carolina has really been botched up a bunch over Trek history.

Well, with all that, maybe it was a good idea that they DIDN'T show it...

I'm delighted to hear that the Ferengi Marauder is back in action. Any idea if this was stock footage, new shots of the original model, new model, or perhpas CGI?

BTW, has Barclay been promoted yet?

With a NCC-235 registry, I would say, it cannot be an Olympic. The Olympic-class is a 24th century design in the range of NCC-5xxxx.

As stated above:

USS Carolina NCC-160
Daedalus-class. Used by the Klingons in a hoax to prevent the USS Enterprise NCC-1701 from returning to Capella IV.

The Daedalus was retired in 2196 so what's this ship doing in the 23rd century? My theory is that it wasn't. There was no Carolina, the Klingons made it up. My guess is they had very old intelligence on Starfleet and didn't know that the class was retired. I doubt that Scotty would automatically know off the top of his head that the Carolina was a retired class unless he looked it up in the ship's computer.

About the other NCC-235 registry. I think this was just a simple mistake. Much like the USS Yeager NCC-81947 registry of the Saber-class diagram.

As for the Carolina mentioned in Voyager, it's obviously a different class. It's not like Starfleet reusing names is unheard of.

My remembrance of Friday's Child is that the U.S.S. Carolina is an active duty starship on neutral zone patrol in 2267. I will review the episode and give a definitive answer later.

Well that's another Unknown class ship to add to the list, I'm up to about 46 of them now.

Not quite...
I think you mean the Daedalus and the original Carolina look the same
However the Olympic bears more than a passing resemblance to the Daedalus...

Yeah, I think the Olympus is really a hommage to the good ol' Daedalus...

Why is everyone doubting the statement that the Carolina is a Daedalus? OK, Daedalus was established to have retired in 2196... but they could've taken some of these old ships out of mothballs for some reason (economic crisis preventing the production of new ships?). What I'm actually saying is that I accept the Carolina as a member of the Daedalus class, since there is no other canon statement contradicting this. Better an unlikely solution than nothing...

Nothing was said about the class of the Carolina, so we don't know anything about this. We can only speculate. Maybe it was an Oberth or a Miranda or ..., who knows?

I would say the Carolina is a fairly new ship. Since her top warp speed is 9.9 which can be determined from the evidence given that she was .7 light years from the Ferengi ship and would need two hours to to travel the distance at top warp speed. This gives a capability of warp 9.9.

Don't count on those things, in 'Scorpion part 1' Janeway ordered Paris to go to a location several lightyears away at Warp 2... That would have taken them months to go there... Instead it looked more like several houres.

I hope Starfleet sent something that could actually fight a Ferengi marauder. Sometimes these marauders put up pitiful resistance, as in "Force of Nature" or "The Last Outpost", but these episodes had the ships under the debilitating effects of alien forces. In other occasions, they have proven quite deadly, as in "Peak Performance". I'm not sure an Intrepid would cut it - I'm rather hoping for a Nebula or an Akira. Then again, we'll probably never find out for sure.

Of course I'm sure the strength of the Ferengi ship relates directlty to the amount of GPL that the Ferengi owner wants to spend on it.

A List of things to be CGI-ed

Ambassador Class
Cheyenne Class
New Orleans Class
Oberth Class
Constellation Class

And it would be easy for them to do this since the physical models exist, so they could use that scanning technique they used to CGI the Voyager...

A Gorn
A Tholian
A Jaradan!?!
A Horta!?!

I don't think the Maurader was proven to be much of a thread in "Peak Performance". The Enterprise had her shields down, and wasn't expecting a real attack. The Ferengi got a few shots in against an unshielded ship, and luckily managed to fuse the simulated-weapons in place. In any other situation, Picard would have just warped away, but he had Riker's lot on board the Hathaway to consider.

Plus, the Ferengi beat a hasty retreat when they heard reinforcements were coming. Although they actually only detected "A starship". (Did we suddenly travel back in time to TOS, where "starship" seemed to excusively refer to Federation Consitution class ships?).

Or maybe they were just scared by Wesley's uniform. Couldn't that kid ever figure out how to do up his trousers?
