I received DS9 Season 2 today, and I've made 10 screencaps of the ship readout from "Whispers." I have no idea how to upload pics to this forum, and I have no time to learn ... so if someone out there would like to post these, I'll e-mail them to you. Just send me a private message. Thanks! The original captured pics were .bmp files; I modified the brightness and contrast, then saved them as .jpg files--so an e-mail with all pics shouldn't blow up anyone's computer.

Wow. Unfortunately a lot of them are still indecipherable.
The one that everybody thought was "U.S.S. Galice" isn't. I don't know what it *is*, but that doesn't look like and 'E' that it ends in.
Can anyone get some of the others? I'm afraid I'm pretty terrible with this sort of thing...

I thought maybe Gallahad, (that certainly looks a lot like a 'D' at the end) but I don't think that all fits. It seems shorter. It also doesn't seem to be Galileo, though.

W.E.D. DUROKK might be WEB DUBOIS, which has appeared on ship lists before.
U.S.S. MIN'DW might be USS MIN'OW from Gilligan's Island, with Capt. KL GIFFORD (*cringe*)
Lunar Recycling I think is LUNAR RECEIVING
Capt. J.Prestly might be Priestly [sic] after the discoverer of oxygen (Joseph Priestley), or maybe a fan of Beverly Hills 90210?
Capt. M.Eligh might be W. BLIGH (of HMS Bounty fame)

The boat in which the characters from Gilligan's Island were shipwrecked was the S.S. Minow.
The names don't have anything to do with that program, though. Kathy Lee Gifford and Regis Philbin are American TV personalities who (at least up until a while ago) hosted a popular (well, within a certain section of the populace, anyway ) daytime talk show. (I personally always found them rather...icky.)

Never seen Gilligan's Island myself, I don't think any British networks ever bought it. However I have heard it referenced innumerable times on various American Films and TV shows so I am aware of the S.S. Minnow
I even recall seeing an episode of Baywatch (don't laugh, it was a LONG time ago) which parodied Gilligan's Island.

I've left out explanantions for most of the places, since they tend to be the usual meaningless jumbles of Greek letters or modern place names.

I probably shouldn't even suggest that R. Savage stands for Rick Savage, a rather well-known stage name. After all, I don't know what sort of tastes Okuda has.
The Powell in USGS could be John Wesley Powell (1834-1902), great explorer of the American Southwest, and one hell of a whitewater adventurer.

The .bmp files are pretty dark. I've thought about sending you the original capture files so that you could post them and let people play with them as they will (adjusting the brightness and contrast in a variety of ways using one's own photo editing software)--the only problem is that the .bmp files are much larger than .jpg files (900 kb vs 70 kb), so e-mailing them would mean waiting a long time for the e-mail to load. But if you're willing, then I don't mind sending them to you via e-mail 2-at-a-time (about 2 mb per e-mail).

Almost certainly, considering that the United States Geological Survey (U.S.G.S.) has an award named for J.W. Powell and a ship named after him, IIRC.
