Hooo-Kay....I needs the side-view ship size comparison chart that Andy Probert made for TNG.

We had it posted here a long while back but with re-installing my PC and the "search" feature not magically retaining link info, I'm at a loss.

I have all the required parts to build a model (with creative liberties, to be sure) of the Probert-Amby but I need that side view.

Little help, guys? [Wink]

Posted by Jason Abbadon (Member # 882) on :

Huh.
I found it and the link still works and everything.

Crazy.
...and cool.

What I was talking abouut: http://flareupload.pleh.net/uploads/524/Probert_SizeChart.jpg

Posted by Fleet-Admiral Michael T. Colorge (Member # 144) on :

So you're making the Probert Amabassador Class instead of the Enterprise-C version?

Posted by Jason Abbadon (Member # 882) on :

Yeah: there's almost none of the parts used in the final Ambassador studio model in Probert's concept art: just the nacelles are useable and those will have to be lengthened.

I'm a bit concerned about the length of the saucer though: it seems much smaller than the Ambassador we know: kinda between that and the Excelsior's with the longer nacelles and secondary hull allowing the ship to be about the same ovral length as what we'e used to seeing.

Fun challenge though.

Think I should go with a more Galaxy bridge or stick with the round version on the Amby studio model?

I'm onsidering something between the galaxy nad NX Excelsior's teardrop shape.

Posted by AndrewR (Member # 44) on :

I like this chart. To think - at one time these were all the 'canon' ship designs on Trek! Oh not including the TOS Romulan and TOS Klingon ships.

Posted by TSN (Member # 31) on :

And the Tholian ship. And the Federation ship that was like it.

And Khan's ship. And the unmanned frieghter that was like it.

And the pen-shaped ship that stole Spock's brain. And the... no, wait, they didn't reuse that one.

Oh, and Clint Howard's Big Ball o' Lights.

Posted by Jason Abbadon (Member # 882) on :

And the glowy torpedo effect that represented the Orion Pirate ship.

None of the TOS ships are worth using on the chart frankly....TNG should have never used any of those older movie-era ships after first season either anyway.

Posted by TSN (Member # 31) on :

"And the glowy torpedo effect that represented the Orion Pirate ship."

Well, if we go that far, we've got that blobby 'V'-shaped thing that was a Klingon ship.

And Harry Mudd's class J freighter.

Posted by Nim the Plentiful (Member # 205) on :

Jason: "it seems much smaller than the Ambassador we know"

To be fair, the Ambassador always had a saucer section unproportionally large compared to its engineering section, IMO.

Conversely, is this a rendition of the "Probert"-Amby?

AFFIRMATIVE

(That's the painting Probert did for the TNG pilot, if you didn't know. Except you have cut off the planet beneath the ship, punk.)

Posted by Aban Rune (Member # 226) on :

In that painting, it looks like the nacelles jut forward in front of the saucer section. What's up with that?

Posted by Harry (Member # 265) on :

Was that painting actually ever seen on screen?

Posted by SoundEffect (Member # 926) on :

No, I believe it was intended to be a matte painting to indicate the USS Horatio in orbit of Dytallix-B from "Conspiracy", but they only used a dialogue reference to it instead.

Posted by Jason Abbadon (Member # 882) on :

The painting really does'nt match the side-view very well:
....unless the saucer is an elipse like the Galaxy (not something I want to do) and the nacelle pylons are almost an exact vertical from the secondary hull (also not very palatable).
The Excelsior-ish impulse drive is not on the painting either.

I'll probably just use the painting as refrence on the ship's deflector and use the side-view for all other refrence.

Posted by Aban Rune (Member # 226) on :

I approve. You may proceed.

Posted by Jason Abbadon (Member # 882) on :

Greenlighted for after my current projects:
Utopia Planetia's orbital R&D facility and a build-up/Review of a new Norway class resin model I just recieved.

Probably within a month though from start to finish.

The side view of the Probert-Ambassador was also seen in "Yesterday's Enterprise" as an MSD-type thing on the E-C bridge.

Posted by Mark Nguyen (Member # 469) on :

What, this?

http://flareupload.pleh.net/uploads/469/Ent-C1.jpg

It's just a slightly stretched version of the "real" side image of the Amby, which was by that point in existence.

http://flareupload.pleh.net/uploads/469/Ent-C2.jpg

I'm guessing that they just stretched the graphic to fit better into the set, or something. The overhead and forward views of the E-C are also on the set.

Mark

the one from ent-C1 looks to be the probert sketch to me, the deflector is completely different from the model

Posted by Mark Nguyen (Member # 469) on :

Hmm... I tried playing with that image in photoshop, to squish it back to the "normal" side silhouette - no dice. I guess it is a version of the Probert sketch, albeit more detailed and closer to the final model.

However, I'm fairly certain the top MSD seen in other pics matches the one seen in the TNG TM. Three more pics:

http://flareupload.pleh.net/uploads/469/Ent-C3.jpg
http://flareupload.pleh.net/uploads/469/Ent-C4.jpg
http://flareupload.pleh.net/uploads/469/Ent-C5.jpg

Perhaps the Probert design went through an interm variation, but the final model still differed significantly?

The side MSD resembls the sketch a bit but not the other two views.

Odd.

That's always the the forefront of my thoughts.
...and women, of course.

"I find that hard to believe..."

This is the Starships and Technology forum. As the title suggests, this forum is to be used only for discussions related to Treknology. The subject of women does not qualify as Treknology and should therefore be discussed elsewhere. I have heard of a section of this board that does allow such topic diversions to occur, however, this message box is too narrow to contain the name of the section in question.

In theory Denise crosby should have been hot. She had that short blonde hair, sort-of Chyna Philips from Wilson Philips circa 1990 but not as good. But those tight spandex suits they in the first season just made her look heavy. I guess it's just her. Even her nude Playboy pics weren't anything special.

Posted by Jason Abbadon (Member # 882) on :

Plus, I always see her eye oozing out of her skull from her biiig movie debut Pet Cemetary.

Now, Susie Plakston....oooo....she's hot.

Making Denise Crosby approximately 4000.

Now, if you had been talking about, say, centimeters...

Posted by AndrewR (Member # 44) on :

Yeah - I wonder if Denise would have gotten a 'make-over' over the years on Trek.

I mean look at Troi!! and Crusher - they aren't exactly lookers in season 1.

Posted by PsyLiam (Member # 73) on :

Well, if we include Encounter at Farpoint as being season 1, then Troi was indeed a "looker".

Crusher though did manage to de-age about 10 years between seasons 1 and 7. It was very odd.

Posted by Aban Rune (Member # 226) on :

I don't know... Crosby looked pretty darn good when they brought her back for "All Good Things".

Posted by Superrobster (Member # 1363) on :

I agree. She wasn't so bad as a Romulan either!

You're kidding me, right? She was downright repulsive in E@F. Unless you meant "looker" as in "look how stupid that whiny bitch looks."

And to me, Denise Crosby didn't look bad, though I couldn't describe her as "hot" or "a looker."

Posted by PsyLiam (Member # 73) on :

I'm not going to talk about how she acted, because I would certainly have slapped her about the face if I had been anywhere near her at the time. But from a looks point of view...yeah, she looked quite shagable.

Posted by TSN (Member # 31) on :

And then she got those clothes. And that hairdo. And that makeup.

What the hell were they thinking, anyway?

Posted by Captain Boh (Member # 1282) on :

At the end of Encounter At Farpoint she's wearing the same kind of uniform as Troi

Posted by The Mighty Monkey of Mim (Member # 646) on :

I don't recall that. She was wearing one of those "skants" and it looked abhorent.

[EDIT: It just occurred to me that perhaps they retconned Troi's uniform/hair in "All Good Things..." and that might be the source of either Liam's or my confusion, but I don't recall that either.]

Posted by Dat (Member # 302) on :

Mim, I'm certain you contradicted yourself in those first two sentences. And I'm not sure how your edit makes any difference to your contradiction.

Posted by Cartman (Member # 256) on :

You are all educated stupid. Troi never looked more shaggable than in Chain of Command when Jellohead had her dress to SF rules & regs for the first time in six years. No exceptions.

Posted by Lee (Member # 393) on :

That's true. Troi only ever looked good in uniform.

ENTER The Confusion-clearerup.

Captain Boh is, for some reason, ignoring several posts and replying to something on the previous page. When he says "she" he means Yar, not Troi. And when he says "same kind of uniform as Troi", he is referring to the fact that Yar is wearing a skant in the final seen of EAF.

They didn't retcon Troi's hair and makeup in All Good Things. She looked pretty much as she did in the pilot (except a bit older, and a bit less chubby).

I am not confused at any point in this conversation.

Troi did, in fact, look good in a uniform. Strange. I guess that Trek fans really are a bit prudish. However, I challenge you to look upon her Farpoint look again. Look at her big curly hair, and how it would give you something to hold on to. Look at her skant, which would give you easier access to all her important bits. Do you now see?

Posted by Jason Abbadon (Member # 882) on :

Crusher only looked hot for a brief moment in The Naked Now when she's oozing over the desk at Picard.

Trek hotties are usually secondary characters or only there for an episode: I never thought much of Vash but the empathic woman (The Perfect Mate) was bueatiful as was the blonde genetically enhanced woman that Bashier "fixed" (heck, the crazy red-head is hot too but in a completely diffent style)on DS9.

I'm in lust with the actress that played the Andorian weapons officer on Enterprise (Shran seems to pick hotties as his second in command).

Posted by Topher (Member # 71) on :

empathic woman = Famke Janssen

The weapons officer, you mean Susie Plakson or another one?

Famke Janssen! I never realized that.....

I meant the other (second) Andorian woman: the one Reed might have had a shot with.

Lita from DS9 (Chase Masterson) is probably the hottest "regular" castmember from all of trek IMHO.
Ensign Sonya (?) Gomez was pretty hot as well: I thought she was going to be a love intrest for Geordi or something when they first introduced her.

Posted by Sol System (Member # 30) on :

Chase Masterson was in some movie...she is not so hot.

I've heard, I mean. From other people.

Posted by Lee (Member # 393) on :

I always quite liked Melora Pazlar. And she was kinda hot in the Dr. Who film.

The whole Suzie Plakson thing seems to stem from the fact that she was a popular character in some show that was never shown in the UK that I can recall; none of her Trek guest appearances did anything for me.

The Andorian that Reed fancies was also hot, in a blue-porn-star kind of way.

I saw that Chase's boobs on TV. Robotman. Cyberman. Cyberrobot.

It was a movie, and she had some boobs. In it.

So take it.

She also was like, the CIA's secretary in Spycraft: The Great Game, which is like, a kickass game for the Personal Computer, if we were in 1996 again.

Posted by The Mighty Monkey of Mim (Member # 646) on :

Ah. I guess what I was failing to recall was any instance of Yar wearing the skant. I still maintain that Troi looked horrendous in E@F.

Posted by AndrewR (Member # 44) on :

E@F looked better than the 'sever bun & drab colour combo' for the rest of the season. How do they explain that away? Troi was going through some sort of Betazoid chastity period? [Smile]

Its the very last shot in the episode I belive, you almost can't tell because its covered up by the tactical station, but it has the black sleeves
