I was watching "Drone" (VGR) today and noticed a string of display screens that I decided to take some screenshots of:

Academy Flight Trainer
D-7 Battlecruiser
Defiant-class
D'Kora-class Marauder
DY-100 Sleeper Ship
Galaxy-class
Jem'Hadar Warship
K'Vort-class Bird-of-Prey
Long-Range Shuttle
Cardassian Military Freighter
Negh'Var Warship
Orbital Office Complex
Phoenix Warp Ship
Romulan Bird-of-Prey
Romulan Warbird
Sovereign-class

As you can see, pretty much just familiar illustrations from the Encyclopedia and such, but there they are all the same. Note the use of the Peregrine/Federation fighter as the "Academy Flight Trainer," originally an error from the Encyclopedia, but perhaps suggesting that they are used in this capacity along with the design from "The First Duty" (TNG). In addition, the Defiant is referred to as a "battleship" (!) and there is an onscreen confirmation of the TOS Romulan vessel being called a "Bird-of-Prey."

Starship Freak requested that I post additional caps from "Sacrifice of Angels" (DS9) showing the other ships seen on the Defiant bridge station screens besides the Olympic. So here they are:

Dominion battleship
Intrepid-class
Klingon battlecruiser

Those are really the only ones clearly visible. There were a couple of others, but complete views were obstructed by people's heads.

Finally, I did a cap of the display from "Repression" (VGR) listing the name of Chakotay's Maquis Raider as Val Jean.

Interesting to note: the SoA Jem'Hadar ship is the upside-down version.

Hmmm... Where did they get the info on the Jem'Hadar ships from, BTW?

Posted by Timo (Member # 245) on :

Is this also our first canon proof of the existence of K'Vort class Klingon BoPs in the regular universe?

Too bad the captionings are so unimaginative here. This would have been an excellent chance to give a proper name to, say, the Cardassian freighter design (even if it was a silly in-joke of a name)...

On the K'Vort issue, the answer is yes from a chronological perspective ("Drone" was the first instance) but no in terms of the "is this the only proof" question. There was another display in "Penumbra" (DS9) that designated the Koraga as K'Vort-class.

Nonsense, Bashir is standing on his head.

The Maquis don't really seem to be the sort of organization to make everyone on the ship stand for class pictures, and then neatly save them in the ship's computer.

But the knowing the name of the ship is kind of cool.

Posted by Veers (Member # 661) on :

It certainly has the shape of an Intrepid in that pic, but for all we know it could be a Yeager.

Posted by Reverend (Member # 335) on :

I seam to recall some source claiming that the Maquis raider was called Zola. Am I imagining things, or is this just contradictory BTS info?

Posted by Timo (Member # 245) on :

That source would be Jeri Taylor's "canonical" novels. So no major continuity problem there...

Canon now says "Ju'day class Val Jean", which I'm quite happy with. Of course, Chakotay (or perhaps Eddington, if he was the chief starship purchaser of the Maquis) must be the originator of that name, and may have renamed the ship more than once. Ju'day sounds like an alien name (don't tell Penny), so the proper name of the ship may have been originally alien, too.

Timo Saloniemi

Posted by The Mighty Monkey of Mim (Member # 646) on :

Well, see, the Fact Files always called it the S.S. Zola, but there was never any onscreen reference for this. I've seen repeated claims that an early draft of the script for "Parallax" contained one, but this has never been substantiated, and the aired episode yields no clue. (All the sources I've seen claiming this basically seem to take the attitude "the Fact Files don't just make stuff up, so it must have come from somewhere" and then just cite the oft-repeated "Parallax" reference.)

In any case, the "Repression" display is (AFAIK, please correct me anybody if you know otherwise) the only onscreen reference to the name of the vessel. Of course, if you believe Pathways is canonical then there's a contradiction with that book stating the ship was the Antares-class Liberty. But let's not go there...

Here's a cool one that I found. I'll try to follow up and see if there's anything more to be gleaned (the screen scrolls) in the next couple of days.

It's the oft-mentioned science station display from the Enterprise-B in Star Trek: Generations. It's actually legible on the SCE DVD:

quote:
VEHICLE ID:
S.S. ROBERT FOX
REG NUMBER: NFT-1327
REGISTRY: EL-AURIAN
VEH CLASS: WHORFIN
FLT START: (XXXX.X)
DESTINATION: SOL III
MANIFEST:
(XXX) PASSENGERS
(XX CREW)

The last two figures should add up to 265 in accordance with the dialogue. As I said, the screen scrolls and gives more information, and probably the Lakul's info as well. I'll have to take some screenshots of my own to get the rest, though.

Do you have the Star Trek: The Next Generation Companion? If so, you will find the stardate for flight start for both ships.

There's an Okudagram of a phaser rifle in "Bliss" I'd like to get my hands on. . .

I'll keep an eye out for it as I go through VGR Season 5.

Any other requests?

MMoM, did you do screen caps of Message in a Bottle?

Posted by Starship Freak (Member # 293) on :

Well, MMoM, apart from the obvious, every ship in every episode ;-) I would apprateciate a shot of the lunar module model hanging in the car in 11:59

Posted by Aban Rune (Member # 226) on :

You expect him to sit through that episode? Well... at least it's only the first little bit.

Posted by Vice-Admiral Michael T. Colorge (Member # 144) on :

Just have him put it on mute and that should help.

Posted by newark (Member # 888) on :

I never saw 11:59. Was it that bad?

Posted by Lee (Member # 393) on :

It sucked. It had no redeeming features whatosever. At least with "Threshold" you could come out of it saying "Dude! Janeway and Paris turned into these hyperwarp amphibians, and they did it, and totally had kids! I'd like to see how they handled THAT during his next performance review!"

Posted by Aban Rune (Member # 226) on :

Yah... also, I'm pretty sure that there are no plans to build a mile wide super-structure in the farm belt any time soon. Placing such a supposedly monmumental event in the then-so-near future was pretty stupid.

Posted by Timo (Member # 245) on :

Placing it in US Midwest was just for the benefit of the audience. In reality, Millennium Towers or comparable structures were erected all over our planet in the then-so-near future, either as actual millennium celebration mcguffins, or then as megalomaniac corporate headquarters. Had there been a little less recession and a little more (and thicker-walled) bubbles on the stock market, monument-building could even have become the trend of the 2000s.

Besides, the US Midwest that was building the Tower was already paying taxes for a space program a zillion times more advanced than the one funded by the US Midwest that was watching the episodes... One has to scale down the relative significance of the Tower investment a bit when one remembers that it would only be two years until the launch of a highly capable interstellar probe, nine years until a manned Saturn mission, and four years SINCE the last use of a manned interplanetary vessel capable of interstellar transit! (Granted, we don't know if DY-100 or even Nomad were US programs, but the Saturn mission certainly appeared to be.)

I reviewed the GEN scene and, unfortunately, it appears that the screen just has the Robert Fox's info looping, nothing on the Lakul. (Which means that the graphic giving the Lakul's info, similar but with some different values according to the TNG Companion, was not shown onscreen.)

After consulting the Companion as advised for the flight start stardate, the complete text of the graphic is as follows:
quote:
VEHICLE ID:
S.S. ROBERT FOX
REG NUMBER: NFT-1327
REGISTRY: EL-AURIAN
VEH CLASS: WHORFIN
FLT START: 9683.7
DESTINATION: SOL III
MANIFEST:
248 PASSENGERS
17 CREW

PROPULSION:
YPS PULSE FUSION
MAX RATED SPEED:
WARP FACTOR 4

Additional caps: 1 2 3

BTW, as for the Lakul, the Companion says its registry was NFT-7793 and its flight start was 9683.3. Presumably, the passenger and crew manifest figures would be different as well, since Scotty said she only had 150 people aboard. (Surprisingly, the Companion misquoted the Robert Fox's complement as 267 instead of 265, but the screencaps show that the display itself was not in error, and I therefore assume this was simply a typo in the book.)

This scene is the best that actress has ever looked. It must be the uniform, but I almost find her attractive.

Posted by The Mighty Monkey of Mim (Member # 646) on :

Reexamining the first of my caps, I see that the display did have a section for the Lakul, but for which only the last few lines were seen. Those passenger/crew manifest figures are different from those of the Robert Fox. Listed are 138 passengers and 12 crew, totalling the 150 Scotty mentioned. Too bad we still can't see the registry...

"This scene is the best that actress has ever looked. It must be the uniform, but I almost find her attractive."

I like how they gave her a hairstyle reminiscent of the time when the other movies set in that era were made.

Unless that was unintentional, in which case, yikes.

Yeah, but she had quite short hair in Aliens. She was also John Connors' foster-mother in Terminator 2: Judgement Day - she skewered Xander Berkeley through a milk carton - where she also had a bit of a curly mop. . .

That module looks like one of those innerspace ships (you can open them and there are two tiny figures and a bridge set inside). They issued the Lander and the Command module as part of the 25th anniversary celebration of the first moon landing, though I just have the Command module (I'm also missing the Defiant, which is quite hard to find these days...)

The Jem'Hadar ship appeared upside down whenever it was used on a display. They never corrected the Encyclopedia error. And for the canon freaks: is this the first and only official name-dropping of the E-E's class name on-screen?

Wasn't the Koraga also called a K'Vort in dialogue?

And most important: you own the Voyager-DVDs??? *shakes head in denial* [Smile]

Will you please screencap a nice ventral shot of the Jemmie cruiser for me?

Mabye some nice DS9 pics too- I need window shots of the habitat ring and inner docking ring for decal construction.

I'll see what I can do about the bug shot. In the meantime, you'll find caps of the station from all angles (from the opening credits) here. I also highly recommend that site for their *complete* collection of TNG and movie caps. (Hint hint, don't ask me for stuff that can already be found there. [Razz] )

My favorite Jemmie is still the V-wing battlecruiser seen coming out of the purple nebula, the first time we see any Jem ship besides the bugs.

Was it "A call to arms"? Anyway, a cap of the V-wing would be greatly appreciated.

On the display for the I.K.S. Koraga , what is the last line? Is this a registry for the ship? The reason I ask is that it is very similiar to the description given for the U.S.S. Jenolan in "Relics".

Display for U.S.S. Jenolan
"U.S.S. Jenolan
Sydney Class Transport
NCC-2010"

Display for I.K.S. Koraga
"Koraga
K'Vort Class
Bird-of-Prey
(line of numbers)"

And, what by the way, is the reading for the last line?

Posted by TSN (Member # 31) on :

It appears to say "4077-91". I don't know what the "-91" is for, but the first part is obviously a joke.

Posted by Jason Abbadon (Member # 882) on :

MMOM, that there is an incredible rescource.
Many thanks for the linkage- I'll have to hunt for the second intro later tonight.

Cartman- Wow. Really great shots: I did not know the coffin thingie extended behind the upper impulse plant like that- it means Gislo's specs are a bit off.
I already built a Jemmie Battlecruiser (sorry for the confusion, MMOM), but by my current standards, it sucks really hard.
Same reason I cant keep too much of my artwork on file- I'm always temped to go back into a piece...
You have this problem of not letting go, Aban?

Off topic-
Anyone got any wild ideas for Defiant prototypes? I have two extra Defiant main hulls that need nacelles, a "nose (or not) and something to set them apart as unique designs....none of the Defiant conceptual art really stands out in this respect.
The whole Defiant model itself is sort of a comission build (the manufacturer sent me a few models to build as demos) that I'll post pics of when it's finished- complete with open shuttlebay and shuttle no less!

Posted by Aban Rune (Member # 226) on :

Yah, TSN is right. It's an in-joke referring to M*A*S*H. Though, I guess we could rationalize that it's the Starfleet designation for the Koraga. If Klingons have registries for their ships, you can bet they're not alpha-numeric.

Jason: Every once in a while, I don't want to stop working on a piece, by usually I know when it's "finished". However, I generally can't stand looking at things more than a couple of years old because I invariably begin a spiral of thinking how worthless and crappy I am and was, and how I'm kidding myself by continuing to charge people money for my work. There are a couple of exceptions. Pieces that I continue to think were a worthwhile use of my time. I keep those around.

Posted by Jason Abbadon (Member # 882) on :

Hmmm...I never feel bad about charging: my work is better than alot of stuff I see getting billed at a much higher rate (hell, look at the god-awful shit on the Star Trek: SCE covers sometime).
I just cant keep much of my work around my place.
An old girlfriend once hung up a bunch of my sketches to decorate (she was being supportive) and it drove me nuts.

Even my old models occasionally get the Easy-Off treatment for re-painting.

All four of my Defiants and my Enterprise E just got re-built that way.
Man, they look amazing now, but they sucked so very very hard before.

I'll post before and after shots for kicks.

Hey Jason, a better solution to paint removal on models is Castrol Super Clean. Dunk your model in the stuff overnight and most paint comes right off without brushing. And no toxic fumes!

Posted by Jason Abbadon (Member # 882) on :

I've heard that as well but not tried it yet.
Easy-Off is great because the cleaner comes off wth soap nad water and leaves no residue (which would affect the new paint/primer).

I'll give Castrol a try though- thankfully, I'm out of models in need of a repaint.... for now! [Wink]

You have to soak the clear parts in it, then shake it off and remove any deposits on the edges carefully with tissue paper.

A cool trick is to add a drop of food coloring to the wax and it will tint your windows.
A nice effect if you want the greenish cast of glass on older trucks or if you want a subtle grey tint.

For Voyager, you could try "Year of Hell". There's a scene where Paris suggests the installation of additional forcefields to prevent hull breaches - something like that. They're standing right in front of it (the only occasion I can think of right now). Or maybe one of the Seven-centric episodes. When she used the cosole behind Janeway, you might get a good look at it.
In Equinox, there's a display of Voyager and Equinox on the big screen in stellar cartography, but they are not showing the entire cutaway, just a portion. But if you take several screenshots, you might be able to put a complete one together, since the scanner bar is moving.

Defiant: "Starship Down" maybe? Or for the turbolift diagram, try the episode with the Iconian gateway - can't remember the title at the moment (4th season, IIRC). There's quite a long scene with Sisko and the Jem'Hadar first in the lift cabin.

NX: I don't think we ever got a good view of it. Maybe write an email to Okuda or whoever took it home after Enterprise wrapped production - they could take a picture with their digital camera. [Smile]

Totally forgot that one. Thanks for the image. The images I found had the upper part cut away. As for the dedication, I remeber a scene where the camera focuses for a short moment on the plaque. Could be when Picard enters the bridge in FC, after the Vulcans have arrived. But I'm not sure.

I know it's not an episode, but you can of course see the Defiant and Voyager MSDs(including the Defiant's turbolift MSD) very clearly in Captains Chair. Since they're actual photos of the set they're as good as, right?

Um....not a display, but I have a request:

Can someone get me a nice rear shot of the Dominion battleship from The Valiant?

I ask because I'm going to be painting/building one (actually VIrtualscratchbuilder- the maker of that purdy Scimitar model I linked a few weeks back is building it and I'm just painting, decaling and accurizing it as much as possible).
