Another spot of tracing, for the upcoming Utopia Planitia Phase 3. . . 8)

And yes, I know the side view isn't much cop. . . but you should see what I had to work with! It's given me a new insight into the class - there's something rather unimaginative about it, as if it was Jaeger's first attempt. . . amd without a front view, it seems as though that most of the Bussards are blocked by the 'saucer.'

Posted by Black Knight (Member # 134) on :

maybe it is like the sovereign. where from the side it looks like the saucer is blocking the bussards, but from the front you see that the saucer is curved downwards so that the front of the nacelles are visible.

What? The wrong one? Probably. But it looks nicer than the official Federation Hull font I used on the Steamrunner. . .

I'm sure that the Bussard collector is fully visible from the front.

Could someone tell me where the torpedo launchers are? I have been looking for hours but I can never spot the torpedo bays on any of the FC ships except the Akira, of course. There are schematics with big red lines pointing at the ships, but I like the good old fascioned tubes, like on the Constitution and the Intrepid.

No idea. You have to remember how little we've seen of this class. . . only ever in ST:FC. I'm guessing they're in the nose-well, from where phasers are also seen firing.

Posted by The359 (Member # 37) on :

My guess as for the location of the weapons is that the phasers are in that little notch at the front of the saucer, and the deflector dish is in that grove immediatly behind that, and the torpedo launchers are also stuck in that groove.

Not to sound negative, but I'm not entirely sure the Norway has any weapons. Oh, I know, the "real" ship does, but I'll be damned if I can find any on the CGI model or the official diagrams.

In fact, all of the FC ships seem to be underarmed. The Steamrunner has one small phaser strip in front of the bridge. (With two others that MIGHT be phasers, but they don't look like it.) The Saber is slightly better, with two on the forward saucer. The Akira certainly doesn't seem to lack for torpedo launchers, but it has almost no aft coverage.

For that matter, the Sovereign is somewhat weak in aft coverage too.

Sol: The Norway has one or more "phaser cannons" that aren't strips.

The DS9Tm has some weapons data on three of the FC ships, but given the Akira's tally of torplaunchers given therein is nowhere near the 'official' (?) 15, we should probably take all of it with a pinch of salt (no great hardship given the DS9TM in general!).

I'm also rather chuffed to see that the far-better side view of the Norway in the DS9TM doesn't add much to the side view in the Encyclopedia. . .

As far as weapons loads go, all we know is that it has a phaser beam emitter in the nose - but then so does the Steamrunner as seen in one of the pics in my Sabre thread, and those aren't visible either!

. . . and likewise this shot of the Steamrunner which is firing from a certain position, even though there's not much in that location except a possible phaser strip. . .

Just a thought, gents...

Romulan Warbirds use single emitters for their disrupters. Most Fed ships we've been privy to have used phaser strips, i.e. a linked array of emitters.

Why couldn't a ship just have a series of small emitters, with just one/two on the front, and not need a mother of an array.

*Looks up, and sees that Frank had said much the same already*

As I said in my above post, we know that the real ships have phasers, but the CGI model of the Norway simply doesn't have any.

Actually, there seem to be two small rectangular things on the front of the triangle where phaser beams are fired from in FC.

Anomaly: Watch when the E-D fires phasers. Y'know those two dots that move along the strips 'til they come together at the firing point? That's because one emitter charges up, and passes that to the next one, which charges up and sends the doubled power along to the next one, which does the same, and so on. A single emitter would have very little power in comparison to this.

That's what you get when you rely soley on CGI's for creating ships. I'm a fan of them, don't get me wrong, but I also like the physical models. At least they don't seem to be a loss for details and weapons.

*Can't believe I didn't challenge TSN on this first time round - musta forgotten*

I know about E-D's array.
Who's to say that emitter strips are needed on the OUTSIDE of the ship? IMHO, they're a target waiting to be blasted. If the strips were to be changed into coils or clusters just under the skin of the hull, then a single emitter , with the coil/cluster output piped through, would be all that is reqired.

Anyway, I cannot recall ever seeing Voyager's arrays having to "pulse" and then meet together in order to discharge. They simply discharge without "pulsing".

Targeting of this system would be managed in the usual way, which I'll leave up to someone else.

Trek SFX on DVD. When that day cometh I'll finally be able to retreat to my lair and spend the rest of my days in freeze-frame bliss.

I wonder if the Norway hasn't been seen because noone really knew quite what to do with it? I always thought of it as a courier craft, perhaps an escort or destroyer. Not a big crew, just a kind of "patrol boat" for frontier work.
