Greetings all.. this is only in creativity because its something ive worked very hard on.

The Trekker's Galactopedia.

This is an all inclusive guide to the non-canon of Star Trek. In the style of the Star Trek encyclopedia, cataloguing all of the thousands of entries made possible if you acknowledge all material, no matter how obscure. The only problem: it will take me forever.

I was wondering if this is anyone elses cup of tea, because its bizarre work, reading and writing in entries.

I would propose that if someone wishes to help me, we join forces and call it the Galactopedia Project.
To help you must:
a) give a crap about the non-canon. this is all about making pieces fit, so if you dont particularly like dealing with non-canon data or giving it credence, then this wont work. I'm trying to streamline all facets of trek history, and maybe if i can explaining some of the inconsistencies created.
b) give a crap about sourcing data correctly. were not maknig stuff up and passing it off as fact.. were referencing a large bibliography of info.

how to work it:
a) we all work on entries, and communicate on their accuracy and sourcing.
b) we post it on a common website. ownership of the galactopedia and its layout remain under my control. decisions about the content remain under my control. partners may post duplicates of the galactopedia, as long as partnership data is displayed. all partners will in turn be displayed on my site. i retain all creative control of information presented on my site, although partner mirrors may differ.
c) we share graphics, with credit where credit is due, in perpetuity (meaning if you are an inactive galactopedia partner, my graphics continue to be credited.

any takers? keep in mind this isnt warping out right away.. i work at two speeds: slow and stopped. this will take a while to take shape as a plan.

The Trekker's Galactopedia (incomplete, under contruction, beta, just for sample, wrong color schemes mixed in, all that jazz)

(oh right, I was going to respond to this thread)

Well, I'll help ya, Mike. But the work will go slower than a Denebian Slime Devil's shit traveling up hill in a head wind.

Seriously though, any assistance in the speculative Trek I can offer is at your disposal

sweet. basically im going to post everything i have on a website (which i have yet to sign up for).. then Galactopedia partenrs will share the password and add updated entries that i havent written yet. there will be a logfile that we will make a note of every entry we write to avoid doubling up things..

since i dont even have it up yet this will be within the next month anyway

Well, I'd like to help too, but I'd probably be like OnToMars in that I'd be going superslow. It usually takes me a while to get things done. Work pays off in the long run, but procrastination pays off today [Big Grin]

Well, thats about my speed.. ive been on this 5 years and i just have a big pile of messy html.

All i would really need you guys to do would be to flip through it every once in a while, and fill out blank entries or add entries if you read a book or watch a show i havent done yet.

and suddenly i feel like re-formatting the whole thing in tables... life just got hard..

I'm very interested. But English isn't my mother tongue, so I'm rather interested in doing a German version/translation of it.

That sounds like a good plan too.. i think your site is great too, and easy to read despite your language concern.

*momentum builds* but needs to wait til i buy a domain.. maybe in a week...

Count me in, too, Captain! This is just up my alley... I actually started something similar to this years ago...never got that far, still have the entries somewhere. Mostly stuff from TOS novels...

Regards

Ooooooh! Can I join, can I join?

I might not be able to contribute much, maybe a little from time to time, but I could be like . . . one of your checkers - making sure that the info doesn't conflict with any other sources or even be your proofreader?

Also, are you going to include info from email sims like Enterprise-F or Yami no Korin? I'm just wondering 'cause I could get some info from those and others to add if you like? Let me know. What's the worst you could say? "Yes"!!!! [Eek!]

Thanks jack... i am still finishing one, but they are a good start. im trying to upload the pages as i work on them, and the pictures will follow as soon as I have the upload space.

And anyone who wants to participate can visit the link up there, the board set up by spike. (you rock man!) im too stoned to scroll up and copy the hyperlink down here, so ill let you scroll and click it.
Weve actually been getting stuff done! crazy!

Use Angelfire to post the media, like pictures and stuff. For free, they give ya 50 mb space. That's what I am doing with my website.

ive been thinking of that.. right now im a little torn between getting the Galactopedia a dedicated domain name, or using a better free provider.. im just wary of free sites because the costs (popups, bandwidth restrict, etc) are kind of annoying

Update time.

I've been back in school, but I've been trying to upload a page or two a day worth of information to the Galactopedia. It's been awhile since there's been activity at the Galactopedia-Board, our editor/contributor forum, so i encourage any potential contributors to go ahead and get in touch there with anything they feel they could add.

Im going to be PMing some of you about pictures, since i have a lot of pictures that might have come from your sites and i want to make sure everything's kosher there, but my site gets hits and i'm beginning to add a watermark to most all the pictures that i think will circulate, so im trying to find original sources for them, since they came off an old HD transfer and origins are lost in obscurity. Links aplenty for all involved, if thats compensation.

Meanwhile, I have finished completing the correct version of the alpha-bar for browsing it, so it should be possible to browse from a to z, with the exception of a couple sections that might not have made it up. I'm not especially proud of the fact that there s a lot of unformatted text that doesnt fit as entries, and that some pages still retain my old color scheme, but im working.

Pictures are mostly all broken, again waiting for me to buy webspace.

Google crawled my site and ive been receiving lots of hits from people actually searching me out.. reading what people visited my site is a bizarre voyeuristic feeling.. people have typed some bizarre things to find me, including at least one searcher who typed in my full name, and the school i go to to find my site. some other fun search terms: "NCC-1305-E"; "Thadiun Okona"; "lyrics yea brother star trek"; "lyrics mind in jail judge bangs the gavel"

Some people who searched my site that were looking for something else included searches for "vulcan xxx"; "cloaking devices used in world war 2"; and "data on jean pulaski" (BTW i think the last one is a prime example of why Star Trek has ruined the internet for real information)

OK i sign off for now.

I have to wonder, what is the source of the names of the ST:IV background species. And does anyone have scans of the TMP trading cards with the background alien bios on them. Im pretty sure they match the starlog scans i have. .. love the UFP page too!

Bernd has the full page Magazine scans on the TMP aliens and their backgrounds in his gallery.

I don't know where the ST:IV names come from. I suspect some RPG, though. Fact is, these names pop up on various places on the web.

bumping this one last time, just to let anyone who was involved know that the Galactopedia-Board has a new home on my site's new forum. we kinda lost everything before, but if any of the old participants want to sign up, register and leave a thread here. there are a bunch of other forums too, but i'm eager to have the Galactopedia become a collaboration again.
