Desided to deign a Constitution Variant that is somewhere between the movie refit and the original. I will be using the Phase II design and other fan ships of the era for inspiration. Currently, I'm working on a Spline drawing of the Constitution to work from.

My progress so far:
 -

I am using Charles Casmiro's blueprits as a guide for my base Constituion

Looks nice. Yes, the center part of the ship and the nacelle pylons is probably where the original and the refit differ the most.

Have you decided if you will have torpedo launchers in the "neck"?

spline?

Common name for 2D shapes in 3D software. So, I'm assuming this going to end up 3D?

I think I'm going to use the round launchers from the "Blooper Show" image

Not sure if I'll do a 3d model. I'm using Splines in 3dstudio Max because its the style of vector drawing I'm most famillear with.

Excalibur?
That looks nothing like an Ambassador class starship! [Wink]

Posted by Captain Boh (Member # 1282) on :

Thats because its the USS Excalibur from The Ultimate Computer. [Wink]

I desided since it was heavyly damaged in the episode, during their repairs they'd refit it some [Big Grin]

Basic Constitution finished, next the detailing, then the refit

You are using splines in 3DMAX to produce a 2D image?

I'm sure that's not what programmers had in mind when they implemented this function. [Smile]

Nevertheless, it looks very nice.

Hey, you use what you know how to use. I have Illustrator, Photoshop, and Freehand, but I can't produce images that good. I make little pixellated crap in a 10-year-old paint program instead.

That's true. I tried several times to learn Freehand, as many people claim it is 'better'. But I'm so completely used to CorelDRAW, that it just doesn't work.

I've been using Corel since version 4, and you just learn how do certain things. There are only one thing I really miss: 'expanding' curves, making an equidistantly larger curve, instead of proportional scaling. If this sounds strange, it's because I really don't know what this method is properly called.

Those are some pretty funky nacelles. Kinda look like the LN-52 SCNN units...

Posted by Captain Boh (Member # 1282) on :

I somewhat based them on these: http://www.shipschematics.net/startrek/images/federation/heavycruiser_endeavor.jpg

and what are LN-52 SCNN units?

The LN-52 SCNN units are the models of nacelles used on the Endeavo(u)r design you linked to.

i created a nice endeavour pic a while back with a corrected registry

i'm not sure who i stole the constitution pic from, masao maybe? regardless apologies, i'll draft an original one soon.

While I like what you're doing here, I've always disliked that warp nacelle design in general. To me, they look like they are upside-down. Still, good stuff.

Posted by Captain Boh (Member # 1282) on :

I could try flipping them. I considdered it before but never bothered trying.

Posted by Captain Boh (Member # 1282) on :

How do they look now?

Secondary Hull grids, windows and markings + nacelle markings

Markings are in yellow so that they arn't confused with details

A good rendering of a terrible design.

Posted by Marauth (Member # 1320) on :

Looks good, only 2 things a bit off IMO:
1. The bottom of nacelle now looks odd since you flipped it over, it seems to be pointing diagonaly up towards the rear, would look better if you straightened it out until the curve.
2. The torp launcher looks very basic but I guess that's not finished, or is it? I dunno but it does look very plain

Otherwise a very nice Endeavour variant, though I must say I quite liked the upside-down nacelles myself.

Posted by Captain Boh (Member # 1282) on :

The Torpedo launcher is supposed to be like the twin cylinder version used on the Phase II model

Posted by Marauth (Member # 1320) on :

That's cool but it don't really look much like the circular one I've seen, don't think it was the Phase II model as there wasn't a torp launcher on the Phase II model, nor a deflector dish, it was never finished IIRC. I think you mean the ship from that poster with a Phase II looking TOS Enterprise flying out of the page. The Ships of the Starfleet manual had a variant based off of that poster. But yeah it's a cool idea but it doesn't really look much like it on the schematic at the moment.

Posted by Captain Boh (Member # 1282) on :

I think the problem is the proximity to the bottom of the neck throws the shapes off. It IS kinda hard to create the image of a cylinder side on in an unshaded 2d image though.

Posted by Marauth (Member # 1320) on :

A nice big front view would alleviate that! LOL j/k I wish I could come up with something a fraction as good as that. Ah but alas I don't know squat about vector graphics.

Posted by Captain Boh (Member # 1282) on :

Well, I'm techincally cheating by using my 3D program to make 2d images [Wink]

Posted by Captain Boh (Member # 1282) on :

Changed the marking colour to red, since most of them ARE red

Fixed the bottom of the nacelle and added an attachment dealy

I like the new revisions. It now, even more, clearly shows the design lineage...
Looks good!

The nacelle is reminiscent of the undercut Oberth Nacele.

Posted by Captain Boh (Member # 1282) on :

It does look like that from the side, doesn't it!

I'll make a 3d mock-up of what I was going for though. Post it tomorrow hopefully

here is what the nacelles look like... basicly:

Having that tiny duplicate of the end of the TOS style nacelle at the aft end looks very unbalanced to me.

Posted by Kazeite (Member # 970) on :

I agree. This tiny ball at the end looks... well... silly to me. I think that you should make your nacelle end more similiar to Oberth nacelle... or slap some grills at the end [Big Grin]

Posted by Captain Boh (Member # 1282) on :

I don't know... I like it how it is. We'll see

I dunno, the little things don't really bother me that much, they are small enough I didn't even notice them at first
