Siggy pointed out this totally cool website which allows you to construct your own TOS-era bridge using modular components. So, let's all build, shall we? Here's one of my newer ones:

 -

Clockwise from the viewscreen:

Engineering Duty Station; Sciences; Communications; Turbolift A; Ship MSD with vital system screens; conference room; Weapons & Defense; Ship Operations; Auxillary Systems; Turbolift B; Captain's Ready Room.

The entire command platform is raised - rather then recessed - on this ship.

Duh - forgot the link to the bridge builder:

Two I doodled with: here and here.

They don't... make a whole lot of technical sense - but when these sorts of programs with limited features come along - I like to try and push them! [Big Grin] I mean don't ask ME where they are supposed to look on the second bridge... they can look at their instruments! [Big Grin]

Oh, and I'd like to see a bridge builder with different eras and the ability to mix different eras.

Surprisingly, Cmdr tw is going to do that later on after he is done with a few projects that he has going.

Oh and one more I just did. The centre area is raised. Oh and forward is up. Here.

Posted by AndrewR (Member # 44) on :

And ONE more... an observation lounge/deck/lookout. Those are windows on the right. [Smile] Maybe the bridge on the Astral Queen or whatever that cruise liner was in "The Conscience of the King".

Look here.

It ought to be pretty easy to do convert his existing program to do movie-style bridges from The Final Frontier and The Undiscovered Country. All he'd need to do is add the support structs that separate the stations, swap out the helm/navigation and command chair components, and add an additional station that has the leg on it for science and communications. Getting ones for the latter eras will probably be more difficult since those bridges aren't based on concentric circles.

 -
So there's the one that I saved when I first started playing with his bridge constructor. Starting from top dead-center and rotating clockwise, there's the turbolift, sensor analysis, science, small briefing room, mission operations, data scan viewer, main viewer, sector scan viewer, communications, crew head, engineering, and environmental control. In the center are the standard helm and navigation stations along with the command chair. I figured this would be a bridge on a small science vessel (hence the Andromeda-style viewers to display sensor data and analysis processes).

Yes the concentric circle thing is the tricky bit - but I'm sure it could work... somehow - or even leave the concentric circles just have more varied 'furniature'. Some of the TNG vessels were TMP movie bridges but with modern touches. Even the most advanced (discounting time travel) ships we have seen - the Prometheus had a circular design.

OK one more.

OK to explain the one above. It's a TOS'd E-D bridge... sort of.

The aft egress leads to deck 2 and an obs deck/briefing room. Science I, Tactical, Environment and Engineering at the back. Various things along the sides with standing crewmen. Weapons and Ops at front right and left of the viewscreen. Captain's ready room bottom right. The middle is still Captain's chair, helm and navigation. Can't change the middle chairs. The captain's chair, helm and navigation are sunken - so the railing behind the captain is above him.

 -

-Ded Plaque goes in the Turbolift alcove.
-Aft stations on either side of the MSD are Engineering and Mission Ops.
-The space behind those stations leads off to other crew areas and an airlock.
-Continuing clockwise, the three stations there are Communications, Environment, and Aux Systems.
-The area behind those stations is the crew head.
-Two standing stations/displays are located on either side of the viewscreen
-The two large rooms on either side of the viewscreen are the Ready Room and conference lounge. The lounge has access to the egress ladder and computer/viewscreen systems.
-The last two stations are tactical and sceince.

Yay, another one. This is just a small patrol ship's bridge. Starting at center right and going clockwise: briefing room, communications, engineering, environmental systems, turbolift, auxiliary systems, main viewer, door to service space, wall plug, turbolift, tactical, and science. In the middle are the usual stations.

I'm addicted to this thing:

 -

-The room at center aft is a conference room/obs. lounge flanked by two standing stations
-Going clockwise is the turbolift and two stations for Engineering and Environmental.
-After that is a small corridor leading off the bridge. The door on the right is the ready room whose borders extend out past the bridge hull.
-On the other side of the viewscreen is the crew's head and another corridor leading aft of the bridge.
-The single stations behind the forward rooms are Mission ops and Science.
-The starboard stations are Tactical and Communications.

Quick, I'll draw his attention, and you take this bridge creator away from him [Wink]

I'd distract Aban, but I'm going to be sitting right next to him at the bridge constructors anonymous meetings we'll be compelled to attend.

This is the bridge of an exploratory vessel, probably comparable to the Constitution-class. Starting at left dead-center and moving clockwise: main viewer, backup computer processors and linkups, computer systems, science, corridor entrance, environmental systems, engineering, auxiliary systems, turbolift, communications, internal security, tactical, and bridge utilities access. In the outer ring, starting with the backup computer processors and linkups room and moving clockwise: crew head, entrance corridor ramp from deck 2, turbolift cab, and bridge utility systems.

I'll call it a day after this one; I'll go find something else fun and enjoyable to obsess over while neglecting everyone and everything around me.

I got inspiration for this one from the TNG technical manual (the section where it talks about the Galaxy shakedown cruise and, in particular, the special bridge module it used). I figure most of Starfleet's ships of that era will feature a round bridge with uniform ports to plug them into on the ship. For shakedown cruises, they use this special module that can be ejected from the ship during an emergency and function as a large escape pod.

The concept I have for it is that the module can be split apart and the pieces inside can be shuffled around to fit the exact footprint of the ship ready for testing. I figure the upper dome of the module contains the communications array and sensors, a small disc under the module would have the thruster assemblies, and the middle part are a series of wedges wrapping around the center command area. For instance, if another class of ship has the turbolift at 72 degrees instead of 0 degrees, then the turbolift wedge can be pulled out, the three smaller wedges next to it can be slid over, and the turbolift wedge reinserted in the new position. In the case of multiple turbolifts, I'd say only one tube is connected to the module while the other(s) would be blocked off at the deck below. Currently, it is in the standard Constitution-class configuration.

In the outer ring around the bridge are life support equipment (waste reclamation, atmospheric processing, gravity, etc.), water tanks, deuterium tanks, power generators, communications equipment, and computer processors. The largest space there (the wedge consisting of the main viewer and a small station) is a storage locker for emergency spacesuits, meal rations, repair equipment, and a bathroom (behind the interior door). In the habitable portion of the module, starting at top dead-center and moving clockwise, we have: the turbolift, a linkup systems monitor, propulsion systems, power systems, auxiliary systems, environmental systems, door to the storage room/head, main viewer, damage control, internal security, offensive systems, defensive systems, sensory systems, computer systems, communications, mission operations, and the master situation/systems display. In the middle, as usual, are helm, navigation, and the command chair.

I agree, bridge constructor abuse is a bad thing, it can lead to far worse things. I do not know what those things are, but one's imagination is useful in this case. I guess Cmdr tw made this shockwave app in response to some TOS bridges I had him do for me for my website. I will take full responsibility for this action and recieve whatever punishment I deserve.

Well, if Andrew can TOSify the E-D bridge, I can do the same to the Defiant bridge...

Okay, so I lied about the last one being my final bridge for the night. However, I swear that this one will be. Anyway, this is the bridge of a planetary survey vessel. Starting from left dead-center and moving clockwise: main viewer, turbolift, engineering, starboard corridor entrance, geology one, geology two, mineralogy, atmospheric sciences, hydrology, cartography/geography, ecology one, ecology two, port corridor entrance, communications, and turbolift. The scientific disciplines assigned to each of the aft stations can be changed depending on the mission requirements. The center of the bridge contains the helm, navigation, and command chair, of course. In the outer ring, starting from left dead-center and moving clockwise: equipment bay, crew head, starboard corridor, ladder to upper sensor dome, ladder to lower decks, port corridor, and on-duty breakroom.

Hmm, I got off relatively easy. Nice bridges guys, very creative. One might want to consider some what ifs? As in if Matt Jeffires and company thought to do different designs for the Exeter, Lexington and Defiant bridges, what would they look like? Would there be subtle changes or more drastic ones as seen in this creative TOS bridge thread. Just food for thought, buffet to the left.

Posted by Siegfried (Member # 29) on :

To be honest, I bet the guest bridges wouldn't look that much different from the Enterprise's bridge. I think we'd see variation along the lines of rearranged wedges (with maybe a couple new ones) as we saw with the Reliant, Grissom, and Saratoga in the TOS movies. There might be a repositioning of the turbolift or additional turbolift, but the footprint would likely remain round and as close to the original bridge setup as possible. Matt Jefferies strikes me as someone would be really mindful of the limitations on the set.

That's not a knock against anyone's designs in this thread. I really like what I've seen so far, and they'll probably give me ideas for additional bridge designs if my willpower fails me tomorrow.

The platforms where the command 'centre' is - are there sharks with laser guns on their "frickin" heads under those platforms? [Smile]

Or is that where the cetacean crewmembers come to hand the Captain a PADD? [Smile]

I too am addicted.

Another I did last night:

 -

Extra large viewscreen (or just three of them) around the sides are steps up to a mezzanine level behind the normal-level duty stations. No Chairs. Central command area steps down. Three ladders behind viewscreens for emergency exit.

Photoshop enhancements, very cool, TOSifying the bridges we know and love is nice. True, we have never seen a Xindi Aquatic captain of a starship, but that does not say that one does not exist. As far as padds and the like, I am sure it could be downloaded to a special screen in the tank so the captain can do his business.

Ok... last one. I swear.

Minor photoshoping for the Mission Briefing console:

Well, as Serek put it, it's so the captain can do his business.

Must be a bathroom designed for a captain with a massive Captain's Log, if you know what I mean. So massive that he takes out the skyline just be turning around on the street corner. A captain whose wang is so big that it is spoken of in hushed tones with eager respect. Must be Sol System's starship.

This is the bridge for a small covert operations starship. Starting at the top left and moving clockwise, we have: the main viewer, three mission status displays, engineering, starboard aft entrance, mission operations, communications, satellite operations, data analysis, and sensory processing, the turbolift, weapons and defense, two wall plugs with systems monitors, and the door to the breakroom. In the middle are the helm and navigation stations as well as the command chair; all of which sits on the same level as the rest of the bridge. In the outer ring, starting at top dead-center and moving clockwise, we have: the corridor that slopes up to the bridge rear entrance from Deck 2, mechanical and environmental systems room, the turbolift cab, the crew head, and the breakroom.
