In about a year, I will be moving to this area of our country from California. Why am I moving from California? The song "Hotel California" by the Eagles describes the state of my mood very well. I would like to see opinions about this area of the country.

I've never been to those places, but from what I hear the crime is unbelievably high. That's about all I know. Oh, and Baltimore is the only major city in the United States whose violent crime rate did not decline these past few years.

I have never been to that area, but I think Siegfried is right. I think I've heard the statistic that everyone (or every teenager, can't remember which) in Washington, D.C. has seen someone shot or knows/knew someone who's been shot.

I don't know that song. Why are you moving from California? I love it here. Wait, actually, I just love Los Angeles, not all of California.

I visit them frequently .....

The crime is high. But depending on where you go, you're relativly safe. Just don't act like a tourist, and you'll be fine.

Stay away from the north and west ends of Philly. The center is where all the good attractions are. I wouldn't suggest living here, actually. But hey, it's nice to visit.

Baltimore I don't remember much of... but it's a big smelly city.

Washington DC has, of course, it's many wonderful points. However, there ARE SLUMS to Washington DC, and they are VERY SLUMMY. ... If you take a wrong turn, you're basically screwed. So just look out.

Personally, I think your'e much better off in the nice areas AROUND these ones.... Alexandria, for instance, is a nice place, right outside of DC, there are also some nice suburbs in PA.....

Reasons-
1. I don't drive. I suffer from major depression which is known to cause mood swings. I need a city with a very good to excellent transportation network. California's network of transportation is not developed.
2. The university level schools are not faring well in California. Last year, UC Davis lost its accreditation. And this year, Stanford has been cited for poor maintenance of its campus.
3. The cost of living is becoming like that in New York and Boston. If you are wealthy, you can make a comfortable living in the Bay Area. (Ex. a two bedroom, single bathroom house can go for 600,000 to 700,000 dollars).
4. I want to experience a variety of cultural and social experiences.

Some have suggested New York. Um, New York is projecte to have half the population of the California in an area roughly the size of the Bay Area (SF east to Walnut Creek, Marin south to San Jose)in 5 to 10 years. CA has about 34 million people. To be honest, if you don't drive in this country, you are penalized in the number of jobs you can get, where you can live, etc. This is a country where the norm is to drive.

~...welcome to the Hotel California...~ God, I love that song.

Living in a small town might be reccomended, if you can't drive...

Just to update: now that Mayor O'Malley is in office, he's "cleaned house" so to speak, and the crime rate in Baltimore is on the decline. However, Baltimore doesn't have that great of a public transportation system.

DC, on the other hand, has a GREAT public transport system.

If you're driving and you find yourselves in the slums of those cities, you're not in danger of being the victim of a crime as much as you're the center of attention of drug-dealers and cops -- one group wants to sell to you, the other wants to arrest you for trying to buy drugs. Don't talk to the druggies, and explain to the cops that you are SERIOUSLY lost.

Or buy a map.

Or don't get lost in the first place.

Philly is cool...considering i live in the yuppie outskirts of it. There's always the sixers here. I mean why would you want to be in a city with the Washington Wizards. honestly.

Now that I think about, maybe it was a bad idea for Charles to restore the 1999 archive of old threads. It gives Jeff an excuse to pop the oldest of the old threads!
