I saw a thing from China on new years day(which was very nice indeed) but I seem to remember them saying that it is something around the year 5000 by chinese reconing.

Yes, I believe China is on 5000 (no BC or AD) They were past 2000 a long time ago. No Y2K worries or Y5K worries either. See, I knew all the Y2K hype was nothing to worry about. If anything is going to happen, it's gonna be on some odd year. 2000 is just too even for anything, including the Excelsior's reg, but that's another story.
