Stewardess strips for dash round planeby Valentine Low
When British Airways stewardesses put on a display for passengers it is usually nothing more exciting than showing them where to find the life jacket and oxygen mask.
At the end of a flight to Italy, however, one flight attendant reportedly brought Genoa airport to a standstill when she dashed round a plane wearing only her bra and knickers, the captain's hat and - for safety reasons - a phosphorescent yellow vest.
The stewardess was said by Italy's La Repubblica to have lost a bet with the captain about whether he would be able to land flight BA2614 from Gatwick 20 minutes before its expected arrival time at 1.20pm on Sunday.
In the event, the flight touched down at 12.55. The first any passengers knew of the bet was when most of them had got off the plane. According to La Repubblica a "splendid blonde" came down the plane's steps on to the runway, ran once round the aircraft and then back up again. Those passengers who witnessed the incident were, the paper said, highly appreciative.
Shortly afterwards the flight - manned by a fresh crew, all wearing the full uniform - departed once more for Gatwick.
An airport spokesman said: "The woman was wearing the yellow safety vest all personnel have to wear on the runway, so as far as we are concerned she did not break any rules."
A spokesman for BA, however, said: "An internal investigation is under way into allegations of inappropriate behaviour by a cabin crew member."
BA sniffily disputed one detail of the story saying: "It was not believed to have been a blonde."
