Do you think that our society is too obsessed with sports, and overglorifies them too much? IMO I think that it is the case. For the following reasons:
1. cable offers tons of sports channels,
2.the killing of the dad
3. how sports figures seem to be escape the consequences of their actions ie which tend to be violent.
4.sports figures are overglorified
5. soccor( or little league) moms and dads get too involved in their kids sports activities.
6. Too many kids spend too much time on sports and neglect their studies.
7. people in general spend too much time on sports.

Er, there's a sport where you kill your dad? I'm both appalled and strangely curious.

I'll have to disagree on 6 and 7. Of my experience, the athletes of our school did better than the average of non-athlete students.

Besides, sports are important. Not to mention the health benefits, you also learn discipline, working as a team, as well as taking pride in you accomplishments. As for professional sports, I do enjoy football, and it is entertainment. Plus, its nice to have a hero, someone you can look up to.

Hmmmm, I'm strangely conflicted on this one.

For 2, thats just the tendency of people in modern society to relieve stress in violent ways. (hell, not even modern) [ex: road rage] Thats not the fault of sports

3: Just sports figures? Thats a celebrity issue.

6: I'd be much more worried about the prevalence of performance enhancement drugs with long-term effects than any academic effect.

Frankly, sports are much like a religion. In abstract terms, its a wonderful and powerful unifying force with small groups but utterly fails larger groups leading to chaos and conflict, albeit on a smaller scale.

>"Of my experience, the athletes of our school did better than the average of non-athlete students."

This was true in MY school's case, as well.
However, having known many of our athletes, I suspect that was due more to the efforts of the faculty and coaching staff than to their actual ability, if you know what I mean.

"Mungo need C average or Mungo no play. School lose. Bad."

"Well, we wouldn't want that... Here, here's a special Mungo test. Don't tell."

"OOh, Mungo no tell. Mungo want play."

"Okay, Mungo, spell 'cat.'"

"Uh.. K...a...t...t...cat."

"Close enough."

At my school, 7 of our senior football players got 1100 or higher on the SAT's.... The top score was 1400, and I personally had 1360.

Unfortunately, the dumb-jock stereotype prevails elsewhere.

I personally don't know anything about football, but....what happened to the other football players. (There are more than 7 right?)

Hmm... Now that I think about it, I don't think there really area any "dumb-jocks" at my school. They're all of average intelligence.

Let's see... We tended to have the smart nerds, the smart jocks, the dumb jocks, and the dumb non-jocks. I was in the first group. :-)

Of course, I think there were a few people that didn't fit into those categories, but, in general, it works...

I've found that people who have a problem with sport generally aren't any good at it.

Or they make overinflated moral parrellels with sport and killing.

Sport is about fun. Its not the winning, but the act of participating. There are people who will say otherwise, they may need to examine their motivations.

Tell me, Daryus, if one doesn't like sports, why would they be any good at it?

Because liking something hasn't got anything to do with how naturally good you are at something?

I'm good at maths. I hate it though. Just because you hate something doesn't mean that you suck at it.
