And, might I add, not gay in the slightest.

*reads all threads in disgust*

UM, if I were Darkstar, I would be screaming at you to remove that sig.

The problem is that while running gags are good here, they are only good if they are in good taste. All running gags that involve Darkstar are completely in bad taste.

We are trying to make a good forum community. It is not helping when schoolaged teasing comments are made.

UM, I hope you're happy that Darkstar is gone. Seriously. I myself am not happy at this news.

Darkstar, if you are reading this, please accept my humble apologies for not standing up for you any further.

BTW: there are some other people whose actions towards Darkstar may have contributed to his leaving. Especially the participants in this thread. I think setting something like this up against someone who perhaps have little tolerance for this kind of crap is despicable, and all those involved should apologize. For starters, perhaps mailing him at [email protected] might be of help.

We are here to create a community that will cater to all people. This is contrary to what Flare stands for, and even worse, may harm our reputation.

Aww, that's so sweet you added that one just for me.
I'm kinda afraid to ask who the socks one was added for though.

Well infinity, you have more tolerance towards gags towards you and such. Darkstar doesn't. So if he requests that such remarks should not be made, they should NOT be made.

I should also take responsibility for this too as I did not defend him immediately after noticing his sig as well as the other comments. Poor judgement on my part, and that I don't have jurisdiction over any of the other forums at Flare.

Who's to say that I didn't agree with Darkstars sentiments and used his quote in my signature.

Did Red Quacker leave because of your signature? Should Omega leave beacuse The_Tom & JeffKardde have quotes of his in their signatures? Should Matrix leave because Lee's got a quote of his in his sig?

When Darkstar came here for the first time, I didn't really notice. I thought "Oh, a new guy who wants to start talking Trek. With all these questions, he'll bring life to the boards."

Then, he started posting his trademark type of post, and while I could have cared less about whether or not his numbers were authentic, others did and called him on it. I guess I eventually did too. This continued, until it became a running gag, and one could say, staple, amongst the Flarites.

Like Sol's massive penis.
Like Nimrod's turnips.
Like Sol & me on the Man Train.
Like my apparent ability (except to me) to perform fellatio on myself.
Like infinty's punctuation.
Like QW's lusting for Liam.
Like Frank's Defiant.
Like Omega.

My signature reflects a post by Darkstar which I found terribly humorous. In a discussion about 'Series V', he posted this like 900 times, and left. How many others have quoted this in other threads. I am not the only one.

Darkstar didn't leave because of me. Or at least I hope not. I didn't set out to drive him from the forums, I didn't say "Hey, fuckwad, get the fuck out of here."

This place is a haven for jokes and slander. If you want a nice, little boring discussion forum go to any one of the other Trek BBS', the ones where posts consist of:
"whats ur fav ship?"
"the akira. :-) ROTFL! LOL! ROTFLAWTKATFWCTAFJESTSMA!!"

I visit Flare because it's funny, witty, and intelligent. For the most part. We all get made fun of, and it's not hard to shunt it aside, since, it's the Internet, of course, and NOTHING is ever meant in anything but jest.

If I were to cite a reason for Darkstar's leaving, I would say that he got fed up with us after he posted one too many posts where someone said "Could you please..." or "Where did this..." or "Why do you..." Sure, that may be frustrating to hear over and over again. It's also frustrating to say over and over again.

So, if I unduly caused any stress, tension, and anxiety in any of our members for whatever reason, please tell me, so I can rectify the situation, and never make those mistakes again.

Also, in the age old tradition of 'an eye for an eye', anyone who feels I should quit, or leave, or be gotten rid of, say so, and if the majority rules, I'll go, and I may never be blamed for the end of a member.

Do I get a vote?

Nah, I'm kidding. There's really no way to know why he left, and I doubt we'll ever find out. I'd guess some misunderstanding, but with his English skills being what they are, such things would probably continue to happen. I think this was probably inevitable.

Not that I'm not all for getting rid of UM. Just not for this.

RQ left even before I placed my sig. He was banned outright by CC himself. Fact is, he probably doesn't care about my sig or TSN's either.

Omega doesn't care about people who write his quotes on his sigs. After all, if he found one offensive, he'd probably ask the author to change it.

My point is that what's humourous to you was not humourous to Darkstar. I'm not asking you to leave, but at least be aware of the feelings of newbies, especially one who is even more sensitive to these things.

Darkstar probably didn't beg you to change it. He was probably too hurt by your sig to even try. That's how his mind works. I can relate to Darkstar since I myself had this kind of problem when I was in Elementary school. And thus, I can honestly say I never liked your sig either, UM. Imagine seeing your words construed and used in such a way to be horribly insulting. I saw it happening here, and I bet Darkstar did too.

Darkstar is gone for good. Just now I just checked my mail after sending Darkstar a message. Here's what I got.

Dear Tahna Los
Thanks for the apology and defence of me. The truth is
that can you erase me off of the Flare Forum. I've
wanted to leave for ages and last night I toke that
step. The insults about me and my life were the final
straw. Please take me off the Flare database.

DARKSTAR
Bye

See what I mean?

Like I said, one person's running gag could be another person's insult. Sure, Sol, TSN, Frank, Omega, wouldn't care about their posts being used as humourous gags. But Darkstar did. And now he's gone.

*sigh*

I haven't had much of a say in what has been going on with Darkstar. I read his posts and while I could have cared less about where his numbers or such came from others did and that is where the problem lies. This forum if anything is all about accuracey with anything trek related. Unfortunantly Darkstar never seemed to realize this. The one true problem with him that I had was his blaming of what he did on the fact that his dad died. While that is a very sad occurance it holds zero bearing on any of this, he did not need to post it everytime somebody made mention about what he wrote.

I look at flare as a peice of the real world. Here you have friends who believe in the same things you do, friends who don't but listen to what you have to say anyway, people that you may see everyonce in awhile who both agree and disagree with you, and the big one people who all out disagree with you for any number of reasons. That right there is life. Nobody can do something that everyone will agree on. People disagree and find fault with the person they disagree with. Is it right, probably not. Does it happen in life, you better damn well believe it. My philosophy is this nut up and live your life to your beliefs, change what you can, accept what you can't, or go away. I know that sounds pretty harsh but it is how I see things.

Yep. .sig's are intended for humor. I don't particularly care, just so long as I'm not quoted saying something I never said.

As always, I find that UM has analysed the situation a lot better than I ever could. But I think there's something I can add.

Thing is, we all tried our best to accomodate him here, and our teasing was just as UM describes it. Unfortunately Darkie took it too seriously. Now, should we try to take that into account - which leads to us never teasing anyone even again, even Omega. Or should we really be asking whether he was the kind of person we "want" here, when he was so fundamentally unable to grasp the nature of this place?

He seemed like a messed-up kid, and I regret we weren't able to help him in what he admitted was an escape from RL problems, into the realms of fantasy & Trek. But how could we help him when every little playful dig got somehow translated in his mind into "ha ha ha, you father's dead and you live in Swindon" - ?

My God this is depressing. I too hold a small share of guilt for a politely-phrased-yet-probably-misconstrued post on his writing style.

I share Quatre Winner's sentiment. He seemed to be troubled, delving into Star Trek and the minutia thereof to escape something. All we can do is hope that he finds his way. I know I will.

I feel really guilty about ribbing him about how many places he posted his "I Quit" thread in forums now ...

A suggestion? Perhaps, someone could make the FAQ a bit easier to find? And, also, perhaps, someone could include a section in the FAQ stating that we Flare-ers enjoy ribbing people (and that everyone gets this treatment) and, as always, good grammar.
