Okay, this may sound REALLY weird, but, here goes. I am in the process of writing a science fiction story. Big news, I'm sure most of you have tried it at some point or another. It is going quite well, and developing nicely. I have a rather full storyline (in development) and a large cast of characters.
Now *sigh* because I am obsessive compulsive, I have the tendancy to visualize and develop every SINGLE aspect of everything in my stories (as there have been many over the years). I am in the process of designing several starships, probes, and world scenery, creating detailed character descriptions, possible side stories via journals etc., and drawing sketches of them. They aren't turning out horrible, but I am doing MANY passes on them, as I've never attempted to draw the human form before. This is where I need help. Not on the human form bit, but something else.
One of my main characters is a female captain. In this world of mine, the uniforms used look similar to those in present day navies, I think. Formal navy blue jacket with knee-length skirt, white/light-blue shirt with black tie, and the infamous white hat with blue band and naval insignia in front.
Does anyone have ANY idea where I could get a high quality picture of this? It's driving me nuts! She is the ONLY character that goes around in full uniform, as she is sort of representational of the "system," (think Janeway and her "principles") even though she eventually breaks away from it. I need to draw this so I can get it out of my head!! Help!!

Ha ha! (I can't believe I'm the first one to reply to my own topic.) I found something very close to what I'm looking for. Ironically, it's a picture of Kate Mulgrew.
I was searching some sites for a decent shot of her standing up in a Starfleet uniform (still trying to get proportions right) and I came across several pics of her from a non-Trek movie. The page is *rustle rustle* (hopes this works):
Did it come out? *anxious pause* I'll check in a minute. Anyway, if it does come out, this is very close to what I'm looking for.
Yay! It worked! After I tried three times. Here's another (now that I know how to do this) that shows the whole thing:
But I still need a clearer image of something like this. Again, if anyone can help, I'd greatly appreciate it. Thanks!

A good illustrated encyclopedia should have articles on "Navy" and "Army" and such. Those articles usually include dress uniforms.
Or any of many books on that branch of the military, especially kids' books, as they tend to have larger illustrations.
Get thee to a library.

Yay! Thanks! Yeah, my '73 edition of Britannica is no good for pictures, I'm afraid. Just rank insignia, which I can get from Jane's. Anyway, my e-mail address should be under my profile. Thanks so much!
and click on pictures and put in whatever search word you want.
also , i was in Army ROTC for most of my high school time and 1 year of uni , i can help you out on uniform designations
Class A - Formal Dress Uniform with Jacket Class B - Short or Long Sleeved Dress Shirt BDU - Battle Dress Uniform (Camo) And Of course Dress Blues , which difer depending on whither your character is an Non Commisioned Officer (Enlisted) or an Officer
Thats the Army Uniform designation , its probobley not that differant for the Navy and Marines , of course they do have about 4 more uniforms then the Army , lol
My Suggestion is you put in "Class A Navy Uniform" or somthing

I just did a little searching and i came up with a very good subject for you , Remember Demi Moore in a Few Good Men ? well she was a Navy Lt. Commander in that movie so i searched from there and found this
not Much but its a start. Maybe you can have some luck searching along those lines.
Shes a Marine from that Show JAG , came up on my search too , the Navy and Marine Uniforms are very similer with the exception of the hat and stuff. The First one is a Class B Uniform , the day to day office type wear , the Second one with the Jacket is Class A , for perhaps a meeting or some other more formal event and , the third is the Dress Blues , VERY formal events.
Im very bored today can you tell?

Daniel: WOW! I thought that I was the only one. The only one to bother with such detail for a novel. It lifts my spirits knowing that I am not alone in this regard and also to know that the people at Flare are soooo kind and helpful. My list of requests is already being prepared!
Say, don't the websites of the military divisions have pics of uniforms?

In any case, you are not alone, akb! I thought I was too. Cool. Anyways, I'm still waiting for the scan of yours, Shik. And I am attempting to search la internet for pics, and am having no such luck. But the search will continue. My next stop is the library and Barnes and Noble Booksellers.
Funny how obsessive compulsive people go all out for one little detail, huh?

Well, pardon me, I'm sure. So sorry to waste your oh-so-precious time. Now, you'll excuse me if I don't waste my even-more-valuable time by reading some tedious little fanfic written by someone so unimaginative they can't even picture their characters in their own minds. . .
