This job is the longest for a single company that I have been working for (though the wage is kinda low, I have never asked for a raise since I started work here). However, this may change; for the last two weeks, I have been getting hints that I may not be here much longer for reasons I don't know. Nothing has been etched in stone, so I could be simply paranoid.

Last week, my girlfriend's sister told me that there are some openings at her company, some of these include positions which are right up my alley, and which I am qualified for.

So with this other job, I get more money then I am making now, benefits (i need to have an aching tooth looked at) and I get a job which I believe is more suited for my career aspirations.

However, if I stay at my present job, I am taking a gamble on whether or not I'll be staying. It was my original intentions to look for a new job after I have worked a full year at this position. I'm afraid if I jump the boat too early, only to be laid off/fired from my new job several months later, it won't look good for my career aspirations.

Go for it, dude. I mean, if the longest you've been working at a job is 10 months, and you've been doing that for five years, I don't really think they'll care if you leave that one.

But, er, I do think you need to examine WHY you go through jobs that quickly ... I mean, for me, this is my job history:

12/94 - 6/96: Subway (you know, the sub shop)

6/96 - 11/97: Blockbuster Video (BASTARDS! But, hey, I got a free N64)

11/97 - 1/98: Sam Goody. Hired only as winter help. Sigh. I was expendable. But it was a sucky job.

12/98 - 5/00: Domino's Pizza. Yes, I took a hiatus from work, took quite a few classes. Then I decided it was time to get back into the job market. Worked for 6 months as a driver, then jumped into management.

5/00 - Current: Papa John's. Decided management sucked, went back to driving.

7/00 - 9/00: Villa Pizza. You know, crappy mall pizza place. Quit as soon as I could. GOD I HATED HATED HATED that job.

So, essentially, I worked three jobs for a year and a half (Subway & Blockbuster & Domino's), two jobs for about two months or so (Villa & Sam Goody), and I'm at 13 months at Papa Johns so far.

You talking if things don't work out at the new job here?

Dunno. But people are saying that if you want to switch jobs, you should do it either A) as soon as possible after you start or B) a year after you start to let prospective employers know that you have held a job for more than a year. If all you got is jobs in which you only lasted for a few months, this gives the impression that you're not a reliable worker, wonder why you keep jumping from job to job, etc...... A major roadblock when you are looking for a very good job for your career aspirations.

So far my job experience is as follows:
- Computer help at a Fabrics Company, Summer Job.
- Telemarketer 1 month. (Hate Telemarketing)
- Order Desk at Gift company 1 month. (Job during Christmas Season)
- Insurance company 2 months. (Temp Work)
- Gas Utility company, 4 months (Temp work)
- Government Agency 5 months (Contract)
- Telemarketer again, 1 month (Not like I had a choice)
- Computer help at another company, 2 months (Laid Off)
- My present job, 10 months.

In between, I have had breaks from employment for school purposes, and a few months without a job here and there, especially one period after I was laid off at the start of the Summer season, worst time of all to lose a job, huh?

Well, my GF's sister tells me if I want that job, I'd better apply now. She would try to put in a good word for me since we're good friends ourselves. The thing is, the job may not be there in 2 months, and if I want to apply, she wants me to make a full commitment.

I'd better get started on my resume anyways. The file has basically been left untouched for the last 8 months.

From my position...it took me some three years or so to get to be full-tme benefited employee, you are looking at the mother load of job a young person's "workin for the man" aspirations. A veritable holy grail of employee-dom.

It requires a serious and thoughtful look.

Shopping list:
- Book on Interviews.
- Shoe Polish.
- Lots of Deoderant.

Jay: Initial benefits are Dental insurance after three months. Later on, about a year after I start, I'd be getting Accidental insurance, as well as a Health plan for things not covered by Medicare. Life insurance comes for employees who have worked 5 years plus. It's usually this kind of case with most companies up here, AFAIK.
