There are shorter cues then the 56' standard. They're not great for play, but they'd do well enough on tricky shots.
As it goes, I'm looking at 4.5 feet of clearance on the short ends of the table (assuming a 8' by 4' table, of course), and 5' feet on the long sides (a bit more, actually, given that the one side will open into the dining room) ...
