I just talked to a guy about wireless internet access and he told me that there was a $99.00 intallation charge. I asked why. He told me the tech needed to align the antenna.... I proceeded to ask him if the tech could align my cellphones antenna also..... I gave him hell about it and asked to talk to his supervisor... Oddly enough the call got disconnected when he transfered my call.....
Check to see if your area wireless service is the same way....

We appreciate your concern. It is noted and stupid.

Wireless implies microwave, in which case aligning the antenna would indeed require someone qualified...

This is has a desk top receiver unit, looks kind of like an Aegis-Cruiser's radar, has about the foot-print of a mid-sized trackball. If that needs to be re-aligned after dusting those things are going to look awful....

Are you talking about wireless 'net access, or wireless networking? If the actual connection between your house and the Internet is wireless, I can see why alignment might be needed. However, if you're on a landline, and it's just the computers in your house that are connected wirelessly to that line, you wouldn't really need alignment.

They have a mini cell tower on there building, looks just like the bigger ones used by the cell phone companies out of town, and has a 5 mile limit on their transmissions....
My thing is, as described, the desk top unit plugs into the wall and the modem, and that is the only unit you get, nothing else.... or, you can get the house antenna, which looks a lot like an old TV antenna.... If this one needed to be aligned, it's size would be easy enough to aim towards their antenna..... Well, for those people that can tell direction....
I can see the need for aligning a dish unit, since I have no clue where their sat. is....

okay..... I am just wondering about the desk top unit.....
I still can not see them aligning that..... or, if they need to, they make a killing for people with kids....
I don't think I am going to go wireless anyway.... I have an interview with an ISP today at 4....

Ritten, have you tried GoAmerica? I'm using it now for my laptop where I get a wireless modem.
