You know, the article says the kids merely changed the words to something 5th graders understand. It doesn't say that these kids are going to start singing it like this from now on. So they translated the Star-Spangled Banner so little kids can understand it. OK, so now they understand it, so they'll know what they're singing when they sing the regular song.
I don't see the problem here at all...

i understood what the star spangled banner meant when i was in fifth grade. every damn word of it. it isn't that hard. why hadn't these kids learned what "rampart" and "parapet" meant by then? oh wait, because they weren't little fucking dweebs like i was. oh well.
my biggest problem with this isn't that they are "translating" the words, but that they [the kids] aren't being given the correct definitions. playground rampart my ass!

No, but seriously I agree with Vogon on that one. Making everything simpler all the time isn't necessarily a good thing. One day people will go back to making sounds like animals if you continue that line of thought to the end. They will lose the ability to express themselves with the wide variety of words, phrases etc. that we use today.
You can see that already things are moving in that direction. As soon as kids are not taught proper vocabulary anymore, other skills will follow. "You can't multiply three by 15? Ok, just add one and two instead. What, you can't do that either? Ok, go back home and watch Dragonball Z - can you do that?"
Why am I reminded just now of Ace Rimmer talking to Arnold Rimmer: "Smoke me a kipper - can you do THAT?" ?

Oh yes, altering the lyrics of a jingoist SONG written over two hundred years ago will surely lead to the downfall of civilization as we know it. OUR SOCIETY IS ROTTEN TO TEH CORE!!1!1!!!

Just to clarify: I'm OK with the idea of simplifying the words as a learning aid - that by doing so they're actually learning what the proper words mean; however, simplifying the words in order to not divert too much of the little mites' limited expansion spans away from remembering Nintendo Game Cube X-Box Whateverhefuck cheat codes, well, that's just plain dumb.
