I have a standard Nec DVD-ROM in my computer, 16X-something-something speed. I have the standard "Cyberlink PowerDVD" program for watching moviediscs, now how do I take screencaps???
I tried the Printscreen-button, just comes out black when pasted as a picture.
If it's a fact that Cyberlink's brainchild doesn't have the ability to do it (lazy bums), does anyone know any free DVD software that can do simple screencaps?

If your PowerDVD came from Dell (or some other company) pre-installed on your computer, it wont have a screencap button. You need the full version for that.

You can't use printscreen because software DVD players use DirectX or something to improve quality. This means that the actual DVD image isn't being played on the normal screen. I'm not sure of the details, and obviously my computer graphics course wouldn't cover something like this. No, far better that they teach us about Modal Logic. The bastards.
As stated above, PowerDVD, or at least the full version can take screengrabs, as can WinDVD and, well, pretty much all of them. Click the "capture" button, or press they keyboard shortcut, and the image is placed in a sub-directory of the main program directory. It'll most likely be called "capture" or something.
If you have a version of PowerDVD that doesn't do that...Hmm. Doesn't Windows Media Player now run DVDs? That might work, and it's not exactly hard to get hold of.

Start PowerDVD. Open configuration panel. Pick capture tab. Set directory to save screenshots in (Capture To File). Play DVD. Hit "C". Give turnip.

Yup, that's pretty much what mine does - obtained hacked from a Warez site, anyone want the URL? - but one question: the (save to file) destination is given by default as a .BMP, can I specify it as any other format?

I suspect it's only programmed to save bitmaps. You'll probably have to convert it in another program, like Photoshop, Paint Shop, etc.
Or, maybe not. I recently switched back to Win2k from XP, and PowerDVD is one of the programs I haven't reinstalled yet.

You have the exact same copy of PowerDVD that I have. The giant DELL logo is a dead giveaway. It's not the full version, so yours doesn't come with the capture software.

In that case, Hypersnap DX could be of help. It can capture DirectX. Note that the trial version watermarks your screengrabs. Unless of course you uhmm... 'upgrade' it with a 'patch'. Nudge nudge, wink wink.
