How's it going? I'm in Bahrain right now. If you don't know what it is, it's a small island country near Saudi Arabia in the Persian Gulf. Our next stop is United Arab Emirates then Seychelles.
Just wanted to let you all know I'm still alive.

How do you like Bahrain? Had a Shwarma yet? And where in the UAE? Dubai or Gerbil Alley (Jebel Ali)? Hmmm. Maybe you shouldn't answer that... Anyhoo, how's the cruise been? Good to hear from you

The cruise has been .... boring and uneventful. We're 4 months into what is normally a 6 month deployment. However everyone keeps saying they're going to extend it to 8 months and we won't be back in San Diego until November instead September.
So far I've only been to Hawaii, Bahrain (3 times), and Oman.

Well, the CNO's saying that standard cruise duration's gonna go to 9 months vice 6, and that the turnaround time for a second deployment will move from 18 months to 3. Sounds like a good plan to destroy retention, to me.

I should just leave it at that and not explain why.
When a ship comes back from WestPac or any other type of long deployment it goes to the yards which lasts a few months. Every other WestPac I believe it goes into drydock which is an even longer process. After the yards period it goes through several stages of work ups testing the ship and the crew. Those alone last nearly a year. Essentially the pattern is, you get back from Pac and spend the next 18 months getting ready for the next Pac.

Well, Darkwing's need to quote the entire message he's replying to in his reply, despite his post following immediately after said message, isn't making me want to sponsor his application to MENSA. . .

If you ever get to see the Burj al Arab, could you please snap me a pic?

The Seychelles! Cool! That's a very nice part of the world. My Father and his sisters, my grandparents and my great grandparents lived there.
