It seems that someone out there has come out with an interesting way of using 802.11b wireless networks to have a sort of computer-run intercom system. It's voice-activated, hands-free, and about half the size of an Apple iPod. All you do is speak the name of the person you want to contact, and the computer connects you. (I'm sure there's something more involved, in case you speak the person's name in conversation, and end up with them eavesdropping on your gossip!)

With the way miniaturization goes these days, it won't be long before it'll already be fitting into a little pin that can be kept on the shirt with a strip of double-sided Scotch tape. [Wink]

In the medical video they actually use the terms "transporter" and "enterprise". Very neat device, it is amazing how Star Trek has influenced technology.

Not to mention the fact that they actually called it a "commbadge".

I seems they start each command with "Vocera".

This is neat. It actually works in exactly the same way as the commbadges do.. except that calling people by proximity hasn't even been done on Star Trek [Big Grin] Or blocking calls.

To be fair, "enterpirse" is a common business term to describe an office business application... "Commbadge" is a drop-dead Trek nod, though.

No, they push the button. It's the device that says "Vocera".

What's the effective range of these things? My wmv codec is screwed up, so I can't play the vids.
