Lately I've been seeing a lot of "Asian Import DVDs" for sale on eBay. All the listing mention that while the packages have some Asian characters, the contents of the DVD are exactly the same as DVDs released in the US.
Now, these things go for a good discount as opposed to the R1 releases ... TNG's entire seven-collection set was on eBay for about $120. My question is, is anyone familiar with these Asian Collector DVDs? If the content is identical, this is a good way to pick up DVDs on the cheap side.

The word "bootleg" has lept - panther like - to the front of my mind.
-------------------- Yes, you're despicable, and... and picable... and... and you're definitely, definitely despicable. How a person can get so despicable in one lifetime is beyond me. It isn't as though I haven't met a lot of people. Goodness knows it isn't that. It isn't just that... it isn't... it's... it's despicable.

I suppose there could be legit DVDs from Taiwan and China (the ones I'm familiar with) if they have been published there, although everyone I know who has DVDs from China have bootleg versions. They usually have both Chinese and English descriptions on the back, but the English words either don't make any sense or refer a different movie altogether (I'm serious). That's one way you can tell it's a bootleg, I guess.

I'm sure the disc contents are exactly the same, since the encryption has been cracked and the DVD has been copied in its entirety. Of course, it's possible, but unlikely, that the discs represent a legitimate Paramount release at a lower price than in the US. For example, Japan record companies sell CDs of Japanese singers in Korea and China at about 1/3 of the price in Japan, so the CDs are often re-imported to Japan to undercut the price of Japan-release CDs (which, according to some idiotic Japanese law, cannot be legally discounted). But I'd bet these DVDs are pirated (as opposed to bootleg, which refers to material never officially released), as is almost every golf club sold on eBay. Caveat emptor!

TSN's right. If they're region 1 they have to be made illegally for sale in North America. Any official Paramount release in China would be region 6. Taiwan and Hong Kong is yet another region.

My brother is in Thailand as we speak, I told him to pick up the uncut "Kill Bill 1" if he found it. You know, the one with more gore scenes and no black and white segments.
