This is so tragic, he really was one of the greatest jazz musicians of the 1900's. I had hoped to see him in one of the upcoming festivals...

*nods and bows his head* indeed but like all good musicians who pass to the next realm, that realm is going to rock just a little bit more now...

This is so fucked up ... the DJs on an afternoon show I listen to were talking this morning about famous people always dying in threes ... they mentioned that actor who died a week ago, then Reagan, and the one guy said "I bet Ray Charles dies next." Lo' and behold ...

Probably just as well. If it had been Ray who'd gone first, and the guy had picked Reagan to go next, he'd have been off the air before you could say "supposed liberal bias in the media."

Speaking of Reagan ... MSNBC was doing coverage of the crowd outside the capitol building yesterday, and they interviewed some totally vacuous blonde. "Why are you here?" they asked her. "Oh, my parents really liked him, and I never knew really what he was about, but this is like such a historical ... thing ... and now I can say I was here!"
My friend Lisa and I (she's going to be a field director for some Dem in Indiana running for Congress) were watching it and just going crazy. Lisa was all like, 'How can you NOT have an opinion on him one way or the other?'

Worst of all...he never saw it coming.
Okay, that was both obligatory and in bad taste.
As a fan of the man and his music, I'll miss the personality he brought to all his recordings. Plus, his performance in The Blues Brothers made it a truly great movie for me.
Really, his passing, while not a big shocker (it seeems he'd been around forever) is a loss to everyone that never got to see him perform live (myself included).

I was thinking the same thing.

What is it exactly he died of? That link the Oh So Obscure Jay added up there just ends up recommending me to register at the Washington Post website, which is the last thing I will do in my life. Really, it's that, and then snough it.

You guys ever hear Charles' version of the Beatles' Yesterday? I just got off work this morning and went to the newsstant to get a paper when it played on the radio. Everyone just listened for the whole song. Kinda nice.

It seems I'm not obscure enough to avoid the rapier wit of the Man-Turnip.
